A
Championship Season
Many years ago, the late critic John Wilson wrote in
The New York Times that "Cabaret in America is a national treasure;
one of the few places left where you can actually see national treasures
up close and personal.
The
year was 1989 and there hasn't been one quite like it since. It was
a banner year for cabaret. In February, Rosemary Clooney was at Rainbow
& Stars, Margaret Whiting had returned to The Algonquin's Oak Room,
Jim Bailey was at Michael's Pub, the McGuire Sisters were starring
in "The Taffeta's" at The Village Gate and the icing on the cake was
Peggy Lee appearing at The Ballroom. All shows were sold out. It was
like some 50's time warp: Legends, Hall of Famer's and national treasures
all appearing in cabaret rooms.
Fast
Forward: It's 2007. The new cabaret season has started. And - guess
what? There's a treasure trove of lofty cabaret stars that equals
that fabled cabaret season of 1989: Steve Ross is back where he belongs
at The Oak Room at The Algonquin with a luminous new Sondheim show,
Ashford & Simpson are returning to Feinstein's at The Regency and
Eartha Kitt at Cafe Carlyle. Jim Caruso's Broadway at Birdland series
has a top-notch roster lined up also at Birdland and popular clubs
like Don't Tell Mama, The Duplex offer some of today's most promising
newcomers on the scene along with more favorites as diverse as Ray
Jessell and Tommy Femia. The Blue Note continues to present top names
in jazz mixed with the likes of Chris Botti, Betty Buckley, Ann Hampton
Callaway and Curtis Stigers.
Not shabby at all.
The season has started and the news is good . Cabaret
is on track. Exciting lineups at all the clubs, new and old favorites
booked and ... new clubs on the horizon! (see Around Town)
The
more visible, high end rooms are in excellent shape. In the coming
months, Steve Tyrell and Elaine Stritch return with new shows to the
Carlyle, KT Sullivan and Paula West will be at The Algonquin and Feinstein's
has Mary Cleere Haran and Chita Rivera lined up with their new shows.
Eartha Kitt
The Metropolitan Room at Gotham has some illustrious
bookings starting with the return of Marilyn Maye and Billy Stritch
and recently Penny Fuller. Also scheduled on their fall roster, Broadway
legend Tammy Grimes returns as well as, jazz icon Annie Ross who continues
on Tuesdays. Upcoming: Anna Bergman, Liz Callaway, Eric Comstock,
Barbara Brussell, Mary Foster Conklin, Jimmy James, Christine Pedi,
Jeanne MacDonald, Dane Vannatter and Lennie Watts are also on the
bill as well as a truck load of other favorites.
At
the Laurie Beechman Theater, aside from their wildly popular "After
Party" open-mic weekly event hosted by Brandon Cutrell, they have
some great club talent lined up that includes Marcus Simeone celebrating
his debut CD release with the Barry Levitt Quartet, Maureen Kelly
Stewart, the Gene Krupa Orchestra, "Crossroads," Cabaret Cares and
singer Mark Rapp.
Also
