In a review of her 1998
debut CD, "Crazy Eyes," George Kanzler of The Newark Star-Ledger noted
Mary Foster Conklin's " astute and delightfully surprising repertoire
choices." With the release of "You'd Be Paradise," Mary once again
displays her exceptional taste in material by performing compositions
from an eclectic variety of tunesmiths, including Bob Dorough, Cole
Porter, Michel Legrand, Alan & Marilyn Bergman and the undisputed
neo-bop composer of quirk, David Cantor. The unusual musical selections
on the CD not only allow Mary to demonstrate her facile and dynamic
jazz chops, but also let her display a vulnerable, ironic and guile-less
approach to the material.
Courage, taste, intelligence,
humour and skill accurately describe Mary Foster Conklin's relationship
to her art, an approach that is borne-out on this new recording by
her incredibly talented collaborators. "You'd Be Paradise" is produced
and arranged by Mary's long-time associate, Jeffrey Klitz and features
strong musical performances from jazz legend Bill Mays on piano, Frank
Vignola on guitar, Jon Burr on bass and Joe Ascione on drums.
