WESLA WHITFIELD PERFORMS IN END-OF-SEASON GALA AT MERCED
Acclaimed International cabaret artist and jazz legend Wesla Whitfield
will return to celebrate the release of her 18th album and also the
end-of-the-season gala for The 4th Annual Central California Cabaret
Series (http://www.CabaretSeries.org/
) at MERCED MULTICULTURAL ARTS CENTER (645 West Main Street, Merced,
CA - 209-388-9665 - http://www.artsmerced.org/
) on Friday & Saturday, March 9th & 10th. Wesla, a native of California
will be joined by the amazing Mike Greensill on piano and the very talented
John Wiitala on bass.
Wesla Whitfield is a remarkable singer, with a deep
love for that rich storehouse of musical treasures often identified
as The Great American Popular Songbook. Wesla has been developing
her skills and learning her demanding craft for a number of years.ÄHer
sound and approach would seem to place her somewhere in the intriguing
area that borders on both jazz and that aspect of pop music which
draws its material largely from the great standards and neglected
gems of such as Cole Porter and Irving Berlin and Rodgers and Hart.
Wesla Whitfield was born in Santa Maria, California.Ä
The youngest of three girls, she experienced routine childhood music
training (piano lessons at age 7, sang in church, studied voice. She
did discover her mother's extensive sheet music collection at an early
age, and used it to sight-read. Serious radio and record listening
provided some important influences including Rosemary Clooney, the
Hi-Los, Peggy Lee, Frankie Laine and Dean Martin.Ä Among her earliest
professional experiences was a mid-70s stint with the San Francisco
Opera as a salaried chorister.
All tickets include dinner, dessert and World-class
entertainment as only CCCS can provide for Merced audience. Limited
availibility VIP tickets are available by phone. The VIP ticket includes
preferred ring-side seating and a private post-show champagne reception
with Wesla.
