His artistry is grounded in dazzling piano and dynamic
vocals. Chris was born in Cardiff, Wales. He plays with great fervour
and panache. Classically trained from the age of four, he is fluent
in many musical styles. He has a particular passion for clever lyrics
and patter, and his repertoire pays homage to British wits Flanders
and Swann ("Have Some Madeira, M'Dear") and Noel Coward ("Nina").
Chris will also sing a song by esteemed songwriter Ray Jessel (a
cabaret compatriot who also hails from his hometown of Cardiff).
An original songwriter, Chris will favour his audience with some
of his own compositions including the wistful "Coffeeshop", the
eyebrow-raising "I Have A Small Confession" and darkly humorous
"I'm Not Feeling All That Great". There will be special guest appearances
from singers including West End performer Shimi Goodman, recently
in Dirty Dancing.
Chris has headlined on many luxury cruise ships. A
seasoned traveler, Chris has played society parties in Rome, birthday
parties in Melbourne, and bar mitzvahs and bris ceremonies in Tel
Aviv. He has even performed in Bangkok at Babylon (a famous bathhouse).
In England his performances include private parties at the stately
palace of Blenheim, and at the House of Commons for the private
retirement party of the first female Speaker of the House, Betty
Boothroyd. Other London venues he has performed at are Jermyn Street
Theatre, The Theatre Museum, Lauderdale House and the Royal Festival
Hall.
Chris was musically precocious at a young age, winning
awards, national competitions and diplomas in Wales and England.
Chris studied piano at the Royal Academy of Music, London. At the
age of 14, he ran a Ladies' Chorus with twenty women ranging from
25-88, called the Belles of St Mary's in Cardiff.
At Oxford University Chris studied Law while simultaneously
receiving the Instrumental Scholarship. On graduating, Chris worked
as a lawyer in London. Never one to be shy about singing in public,
Chris once sang solo outside a London train station for a Christmas
charity event when he was the only one of a volunteer group who
showed up! Chris also worked as a lawyer in New York advising on
English law in 1998.
Returning to his musical roots, he studied at the
Guildford School of Acting, appearing in many shows including a
one man show about the life of Noel Coward, written especially for
him, entitled Laughing When I Choose.
As a composer, Chris wrote the musical Over The Threshold
which was recorded featuring his talents and those of Shimi Goodman,
as well as Tony award winner Frances Ruffelle and Dianne Pilkington,
who is currently playing Glinda in the West End production of Wicked.
In 2006 Chris submitted Over The Threshold to a UK competition looking
for new musical theatre writing and it was chosen to be performed
at Upstairs at the Gatehouse, a venue in North London. Some songs
from this show have been chosen to be performed at the Montclair
State University Player's Theatre in New Jersey on November 12th
at 7:30 pm.
There is a $10 cover plus 2-drink minimum.
