EVAN TOTH AND THE EXCUSES IN CD RELEASE SHOW
NJ singer/songwriter Evan Toth, releases his new album, "Welcome Back
to Hell" at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788

) with two shows, on Friday, February 9th at 9:00 pm and Saturday,
February 10th at 6:00 pm. The CD is packed with powerful pop-rock
melodies which exude Elvis Costello and Billy Joel influences while
veering into Great American show-tune and jazz neighborhoods by way
of his athletic vocal delivery, ferocious piano tirades, and expressive
guitar displays. The night's theme is, "Bringing New Jersey to New
York City" and Evan is joined on stage by his band, The Excuses.
Evan Toth was exposed to many things as a child, but
the one thing that always seemed to be most prevalent during his
formative years was music. His dad introduced him to an amazing
spectrum of recorded and live music including ballet, Broadway,
opera, or whatever he thought would open up new ways of thinking.
A Chuck Berry record received from his mom when he was in 2nd grade
sort of changed his live as he expanded his musical obsession by
buying armfuls of well-worn Beatles, Billy Joel, Elvis Costello,
Bruce Springsteen, etc.
Being an "only child" Evan took it upon himself to
learn piano, guitar, harmonica and voice independently. While in
high school where he played around in a gaggle of punk bands. The
most constant of them being his own creation: The Derelicts. Fueled
by Kurt Cobain and plenty of good-old teenage angst they built up
quite a reputation as being a fun, solid Northern N.J. punk rock
band opening up for such legendary bands as Dog Eat Dog, Reigndance,
and Biohazard.
In 1998 he to entered a "sound-alike" contest held
by the NYC metro-area Beatlefest and managed to snag first-place
for aping Paul McCartney's Let It Be. 1000+ Beatles fans helped
him win by audience participation. This was followed by months of
clawing through every piano bar in NYC, a stint in the show Tony
n' Tina's Wedding (the longest running comedy in Off-Broadway history)
including a tour throughout the US for six months, a limited stay
in the NYC production and later for performances in Fukouka, Japan.
Upon his return to New Jersey I began making the rounds as a solo
player (guitar, vox & piano), a short tour to Nashville, TN and
New Orleans, LA, playing all alone on stage. At long last he has
gathered a new band, called The Excuses.
Evan Toth and The Excuses have played at The Newark
Bears' Riverfront Stadium, Hackensack's Foscini Park; performed
on WMSU-FM, WFDU-FM, and they have been written up in The Bergen
Record, The Aquarian, and Kweevak.com. We've also been gaining a
loyal following on the NJ/NYC original band circuit as our 900+
mailing list attests. Our reputation to pack a bar and to give a
blistering live performance is beginning to precede us.
There is a $10 cover, 2-drink minimum.
