NATE BIRKEY AT THE METROPOLITAN ROOM MARCH 27th
Trumpeter /singer /songwriter, Nate Birkey will be returning to New
York's THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440
-
http://www.metropolitanroom.com/
) on Tuesday, March 27th at 9:30 pm. Nate made his debut at the Metropolitan
in January and played to a full and enthusiastic house. Nate, a recent
transplant from Southern California who has already begun attracting
attention on the New York music scene, will be joined by some of the
area's finest musicians - Jim Ridl, who has performed with Pat Martino
and Dave Liebman will be playing piano, along with bassist Bill Moring
and drummer Marko Marcinko, both of whom play in saxophonist Dave
Liebmann's quartet.
Birkey's live performances, as well as his newest
CD combine straight-ahead jazz with occasional detours into blues,
Latin Jazz, gospel, and even country; but maintain a cohesive sound
throughout which is passionate, intelligent and haunting. For his
debut at the Metropolitan, Nate will be revisiting the music of
Chet Baker, one of his life-long idols, as well as performing some
of his original compositions.
Critics have compared Birkey's subtle vocal and trumpet
approach to that of Chet Baker and Miles Davis respectively - a
sound poised and assured, powerfully stark and spare, creating an
atmosphere at once solitary and electric.
There is a $15 cover and a 2-drink minimum.
