"MUSICAL CHAIRS" PRESENTS CABARET LEGENDS JULIE WILSON AND STEVE
ROSS
For the second concert of the seventh season, and Musical Chairs' 42nd
production, producer and host Derrik Lewis is paying tribute to what
New Yorkers knew as "The Golden Age of Cabaret" at JOSLYN CENTER THEATRE
(73-750 Catalina Way, Palm Desert, CA - 760-340-3220 - http://www.joslyncenter.org/theater/index.htm
) on Sunday, February 4th at 2:30 & 7:30 pm. - Tickets available to
Joslyn Center Members only; at the INDIAN WELLS THEATER (37500 Cook
Street, Palm Desert, CA - 760-341-2883 - http://pdc.csusb.edu/IWTheater.htm
) on Monday, February 5th at 7:30 pm; and the ANNENBERG THEATRE at the
PALM SPRINGS ART MUSEUM (101 Museum Drive, Palm Springs, CA - 760-325-4490
- http://www.psmuseum.org/
) on Wednesday, February 7th at 2:30 & 7:30 pm.
When harely old enough to order a cocktail, Derrik Lewis
personally ventured into the rarified atmosphere of intimate clubs
and revues in the late 50s and early 60s and was befriended by many
of the performers who defined the era, including Mabel Mercer, Bobby
Short, William Roy, Kaye Ballard, Ronny Whyte, Charles DeForrest,
Portia Nelson and many others, including his long-time friend, international
cabaret diva, Broadway and concert star, Julie Wilson.
In an effort to recreate some of the magic of the time,
Lewis has assembled a stellar cast of performers including the legend
herself - Julie Wilson - who will share the evening with "The Crown
Prince of New York Cabaret," the debonair singer-pianist Steve Ross,
comic Paul Desmond and the bright, up-and-coming, award-winning new
cabaret star, Terese Genecco. Julie, Steve, Terese and Paul are all
masters of the cabaret genre and this will be a once in a lifetime
opportunity to see them together on one stage!
In its heyday, New York cabarets contributed unforgettably
to American entertainment. Many great stars like Barbra Streisand,
Bette Midler, Mike Nichols and Elaine May, Joan Rivers, Carol Channing,
Wood Allen, Carol Burnett, Charlotte Rae and dozens of others spent
their earliest and most formative years in small dark cabarets with
exotic names like The Blue Angel, The Bon Soir, Le Reuban Bleu, Cafe
Society, The Duplex, The RSVP, Upstairs at the Downstairs and many
others.
Lewis is also dedicating this production to the memory
of his long-time friend and mentor, Bobby Short, who along with a
handful of other New York cabaret stars, defined the form for all
time and future generations.
