Lauri Strauss succumbed to leukemia at the early age of 26.
In her honor and memory family and friends established the Lauri Strauss
Leukemia Foundation with a mission to find a cure for leukemia and
allied cancers by means of awarding LSLF Discovery Grants providing
"seed money" to young investigators in the fields of leukemia and
allied cancers. Additionally the Foundation provides for patient care,
promotes marrow donor education and conducts marrow drives within
blood drives.
LSLF Discovery Grants support innovative research
projects each project representing one important piece of the puzzle
of understanding leukemia and allied cancers. Young researchers
must compete for funding with senior, established investigators
making it difficult for them to receive funding through traditional
sources.
Each year, the Medical Advisory Board of The Lauri
Strauss Leukemia Foundation invites research project applications,
identifies, reviews and rates all submissions. Subsequently the
Medical Advisory Board makes recommendations to the Board of Directors
as to the integrity and validity of the projects submitted. Discovery
Grant investigators report on their progress in an ongoing manner
and the results of their endeavors are made readily available to
all participating donors. All Discovery Grants awarded stipulate
that no indirect costs can be covered by the funding.
To date, our grants total more than $3 million. LSLF
Discovery Grants have enabled chosen young investigators to continue
their work -- resulting in over $50 million in additional funding
from other sources.
Today as opportunities for government funding for
cancer research becomes increasingly competitive, and as the health
care environment continues to change rapidly, the critical need
for private funding for medical research and patient care programs
is escalating. The Foundation mission is geared to help fill these
needs voids. There will be a tomorrow when leukemia and allied cancers
are defeated. Your help will enable the Discovery Grants to become
the Discovery Cure..
