NEW MUSICAL "THE TWO SVENGALIS" REUNITES BARTON AND DIBUONO

The world premiere of "The Two Svengalis," a new two-person musical starring the singer/composer Fred Barton and the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle award-winning actress Toni DiBuono opens a limited two-week engagement at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/ ), on Wednesday, April 21st at 9:00 pm, with additionals performances on Thursday, April 22nd at 9:00 pm; Thursday, April 29th at 9:00 pm; and Friday, April 30th at 6:30 pm. "The Two Svengalis," with songs by Barton and a book by Barton and DiBuono, is the debut writing collaboration of the fellow "Forbidden Broadway" alums. The music charge is $15 with a 2-drink minimum. ($7.50 cover for members of MAC & CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE).

Barton, who is currently reviving his 80s cult hit "Miss Gulch Returns!" at DON'T TELL MAMA through April 11th, was a founding cast member of "Forbidden Broadway" in 1982. DiBuono, who is married to the actor Michael McGrath, made her New York debut in the 1988 edition, earning a Best Actress in a Musical Drama Desk and a Best New York Debut of an Actress Outer Critics Circle Award.

"The Two Svengalis" blends the styles of early 1950s Hollywood backstage musicals with the melodramatics of Douglas Sirk, and tells the story of an inhibited suburban housewife who picks a singularly ineffectual vocal coach to help her learn how to sing. After discovering they have a mysterious ability to inspire one another to greatness they become overnight mega-celebrities.

"The Two Svengalis" features 14 new songs that closely track the development of the Svengalis' budding relationship -- from cornball honky-tonk to 50s swing to sophisticated counterpoint duets. A highly regarded tunesmith, Barton created "Miss Gulch Returns!" in 1984. The Oz back story-premised show about the secret life of Almira Gulch, the notorious bicycle-riding dog-snatcher from Kansas, still is performed regionally and its 1986 recording is still a favorite among theatre aficionados.

Toni DiBuono has performed on Broadway in the Roundabout revival of "The Boys from Syracuse" and Off-Broadway in "Up Against It" at The Public Theatre, and "Bad Habits" at the Manhattan Theatre Club. On television she starred on PBS's Mathnet, and was the co-host of Our Home on Lifetime.
