Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, Creators of AVENUE Q
MAC
(Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs - http://www.macnyc.com/
) and ASCAP (The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers
- http://www.ascap.org/ ) will
present the MAC/ASCAP Songwriters' Showcase at THE LIGHTHOUSE (111
East 59th Street, NYC), on Wednesday, September 22nd at 6:00 pm. The
Showcase, produced by Michael A. Kerker and Jamie deRoy, will be hosted
by former MAC President and current MAC President Emeritus Jamie deRoy
who began these showcases in 1987 as part of the regular MAC seminar
series on cabaret-related topics. This showcase will feature Robert
Lopez and Jeff Marx, who created and wrote all the songs for the hit
Broadway musical" Avenue Q," which recently won the 2004 Tony Awards
for Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Musical.
Admission is $15 for the general public, $5 for MAC and ASCAP members.
Seating is on a first come, first served basis. No advance reservations
possible.
Before it moved to Broadway, "Avenue Q" enjoyed a sold-out run Off-Broadway
at the Vineyard Theatre, where it received the season's Lucille Lortel
Award for Best Musical. In 2000, Bobby and Jeff won the coveted Ed
Kleban Award for Lyrics for "Kermit, Prince of Denmark," a proposed
Muppet Movie based very, very loosely on Hamlet. They wrote and orchestrated
two shows for Theatreworks/USA, "Reading Rainbow" and "Ferdinand The
Bull," plus a handful of children's songs for The Disney Channel.
They are currently working on a musical comedy film for Universal
Pictures, a reality show/documentary-meets-musical series they are
creating for VH1, and a stage musical based on a particular religion
(which they prefer not to disclose), which they plan to develop over
the next decade or so with Matt Stone and Trey Parker from South Park.
Jeff and Bobby both write lyrics and they both write music, together,
in the same room, at the same time. They met in 1998 in the BMI Workshop
(which they strongly recommend to aspiring musical theater writers).
The line-up for the showcase features songs and performances by
Broadway and cabaret performers and songwriters including Deborah
Abramson, Stephanie J. Block, David Buskin, Rob Carlson, Marie Cain,
Mark Coffin, Howard Fishman, Ray Errol Fox, Andrew Gerle, Peter Lurye,
Garry Novikoff, Modern Man, Barbara Schottenfeld, KT Sullivan, Maryrose
Wood, Peter Yawitz and Amanda Yesnowitz.
