Named Best International Act 2003 by Backstage magazine, Barb Jungr has developed a devoted following in New York City among jazz aficionados and discerning reviewers alike. Last June she took Joe's Pub by storm and once again wowed enthusiastic audiences for four nights at Mama Rose's in March. Her latest album, Waterloo Sunset, was just named among the top CDs of the Year by Cabaret Hotline Online.

Dubbed by Jazzwise "jazz-chonsonnier par excellence," Barb Jungr (pronounced YOUNG-er) is fast becoming a Mama Rose's favorite, performing to wide acclaim and repeat audiences. In Waterloo Sunset, Jungr's third release since 2000, the singer explores new territory with selections from the Everly Brothers, Ray Davies, Richard Thompson, Steve Miller and Leon Russell, as well as two classic Bob Dylan pieces and three original songs. Other songs on Jungr's "utterly beguiling disk" (Jazz Times) include Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" and "High Water (For Charley Patton)," Steve Miller's "The Joker" and Ray DaviesĒ own "Waterloo Sunset."

Jungr first grabbed the attention of the American music cognoscenti with the U.S. release from Linn Records in 2002 of her internationally acclaimed CDs: Every Grain of Sand, her Bob Dylan tour-de-force, and Chanson: The Space In Between, selections from Jacques Brel, Leo Ferre and Elvis Costello. A sultry alto, Jungr combines the precise, controlled jazz phrasing of Peggy Lee with the blues flavor of Nina Simone. Both genres complement perfectly her smoky vocals and love of the supper club atmosphere. In her latest renditions, she adds the occasional Western twang.

Born and raised in England, a child of immigrant Czechoslovakian and German parents, Jungr was exposed to a smorgasbord of musical influences, including high opera, Gilbert & Sullivan, Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald. This varied array led Jungr to study the violin in grade school, form a jazz band in college, sing with a New Wave trio and then a folk-blues duo before striking out on her own in the early 1990s.

Since coming to America, she has captivated the most discerning music fans and critics alike. Accolades for her U.S. performances in 2003 poured in from the New York Times, New York magazine, the New York Post, Back Stage, Variety, and the Village Voice, to name a few.
