AVENUE
Q COMPOSERS IN CONCERT AT BIRDLAND

On
Monday, November 29th at 7:00 pm, the Tony Award-winning songwriting
team Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx will be singing their hit songs from
Avenue Q, along with some unknown "trunk songs" at BIRDLAND (315 West
44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080 - http://www.birdlandjazz.com/
). This will be the first time the duo performs a full concert in
public. They will also be joined on stage by some Extremely Special
Guests! This evening is part of "The Winter Season," presented by
Jim Caruso in association with TheaterMania.com, which features top
Broadway and cabaret performers at the world-class music room. There
is a $10 cover and $10 food/drink minimum.
Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx created and wrote all the
songs for the hit Broadway musical Avenue Q, which recently won the
2004 Tony Awards for Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical,
and Best Musical. Before it moved to Broadway, Avenue Q enjoyed a
sold-out run Off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre, where it received
the season's Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical.
In 2000, Bobby and Jeff won the coveted Ed Kleban Award
for Lyrics for Kermit, Prince of Denmark, a proposed Muppet Movie
based very, very loosely on Hamlet. They wrote and orchestrated two
shows for Theatreworks/USA (Reading Rainbow and Ferdinand The Bull),
plus a handful of children's songs for The Disney Channel. They are
currently working on a musical comedy film for Universal Pictures,
a reality show/documentary-meets-musical series they are creating
for VH1, and a stage musical based on a religion (which they prefer
not to disclose), with Matt Stone and Trey Parker from South Park.
They are also in negotiations to turn Avenue Q into a television series
for a major big-three network. The writing team is eagerly anticipating
the September 2005 opening of a second company of Avenue Q in Steve
Wynn's new hotel, Wynn Las Vegas.
Jeff and Bobby both write lyrics and they both write
music, together, in the same room, at the same time. They met in 1998
in the BMI Workshop, which they recommend highly to any aspiring musical
theater writers.
BIRDLAND has been a world-class music room on the Manhattan
nightclub scene since 1949. Jazz superstars Sarah Vaughan, Count Basie,
Dinah Washington, and more recently Ann Hampton Callaway, Diana Krall,
John Pizzarelli and Tito Puente have all performed on the BIRDLAND
stage. The room offers top-flight music in a world class setting,
good sight lines and acoustics, and a menu featuring award-winning
Southern cuisine. Most recently, it's become the home of Jim Caruso's
Cast Party, the weekly Monday late night showbiz gathering featuring
impromptu performances by the Broadway, jazz and nightclub creme de
la creme.
