THREE NEW MUSICALS SELECTED FOR CHICAGO ASCAP WORKSHOP

FIRST-EVER ASCAP FOUNDATION/DISNEY MUSICAL THEATRE WORKSHOP IN CHICAGO

The ASCAP Foundation is pleased to announce that three new musical works have been singled out for presentation at the first-ever Chicago-based ASCAP Foundation/Disney Music Theatre Workshop. The winning proposals were selected from more than 150 applicants. The four-day workshop, held in conjunction with the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, will take place on April 21st, 22nd, 28th and 29th at 7:00 pm, in the Fifth Floor East Meeting Room at the CHICAGO CULTURAL CENTER (78 East Washington Street, Chicago, IL - 1-877-CHICAGO - http//www.877CHICAGO.com/ ). The workshop is free of charge and open to everyone, regardless of performing right affiliation. All aspiring musical theatre writers, and those who submitted musicals for the workshop, are encouraged to attend.

The selected writers and their musical works are:

BREATHE - By Michael Biello and Dan Martin (book, music, lyrics) from Philadelphia, PA. A collection of seven short musicals celebrating Gay and Lesbian life. Performed on April 22nd and April 29th.

BECOMING GEORGE - By Linda Eisenstein (music) from Cleveland, OH; and Doug Frew (book, lyrics) and Patti McKenny (book, lyrics) from Chicago, IL. Radical writer George Sand comes out of her retirement to confront a repressive government, a war, and her new protegee: Sarah Bernhardt. Performs April 21st and April 28th.

RIVER'S END - By Cheryl Coons (book, lyrics) and Chuck Larkin (music) from Chicago, IL Based on the true story of newlyweds Glen and Bessie Hyde, who vanished on their honeymoon in the Grand Canyon in 1928. Performs April 21st and April 29th.

The workshop will be directed by Academy Award and Grammy-winning composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell, Pippin, Pocahontas, The Prince of Egypt), and theatre composer/lyricist Craig Carnelia (The Sweet Smell of Success, Is There Life After Highshool? and Working -- based on the book by Studs Terkel), and the selected musical theatre writers will make short presentions from their original works-in-progress for professional critique.

The ASCAP Foundation/Disney Musical Theatre Workshop in Chicago is part of an ongoing series of workshops sponsored by The ASCAP Foundation to nurture new American musicals.

Since 1975 The ASCAP Foundation has been dedicated to supporting American music creators and encouraging the development of American music through educational and talent development programs. Included in these are songwriting workshops, grants, scholarships, music education programs, and public service projects for senior composers and lyricists.
