The
Mardi Gras is just around the corner and KABARETT JUNCTION (139 Oxford
Street, Bondi Junction, Sydney, AU - 9365 6374 - bookings@showtune.com.au)
is getting into the spirit once again, presenting a very special international
artist - Varla Jean Merman! Ms. Merman's show "I've Got The Music
In Me" appears for TWO SHOWS ONLY at Kabarett Junction on February
7th and 8th. Tickets $29.95 through TicketMaster7 on 1300 136 166
or http://www.ticketmaster7.com/.
"I've Got The Music In
Me" marks Varla Jean's debut in Sydney. The purported love-child of
the minutes-long marriage between Ethel Merman and Ernest Borgnine,
Varla Jean combines the fiery good looks of Ann-Margret, the decolletage
of Dolly Parton, the voice of Joan Sutherland on ectasy, and a comedic
punch uniquely her own.
Arriving directly from
the 50th Annual Perth Arts Festival, this "International Chanteuse"
is ready to take Sydney by storm. Much like a tornado in a trailer
park, this American diva is on the cusp of superstardom; Varla appeared
on Broadway in the musical "Chicago," at London's Soho Theatre and
her upcoming feature film "Girls Will Be Girls" has just been selected
for screening at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival.
Varla Jean Merman is the
creation of Jeffery Roberson. He came to New York from New Orleans
in 1994 and immediately became a fixture in the downtown club scene.
In 1995, he wrote and starred in "Varla and the Man Who Got Away,"
which was produced by Susanne Bartsch at Westbeth Theatre Center.
His multi-media cabaret acts, "I, Who Have Nothing" (1997 BISTRO AWARD)
and "Peel Me a Grape" (1998 MAC AWARD) ran for fifteen sell-out months
at EIGHTY EIGHT'S Cabaret.
