Michael
Rupert and Judy Simmons at BLACK ROCK
BLACK ROCK CENTER FOR
THE ARTS (12900 Middlebrook Road, Germantown, MD - 301-528-2260),
continues their monthly cabaret series "Cabaret at the Rock" presenting
Michael Rupert and Judy Simmons in "What Were We Thinking" on Friday
January 24th at 8:00 pm. Music Director Jay Crowder completes the
trio providing not just accompaniment, but carefully constructed arrangements
of each song. Tickets are $15.00.
What happens when a Tony
award winning performer and one of DC's most accomplished cabaret/musical
theatre performers combine their considerable talents? In the case
of Michael Rupert and Judy Simmons the result is an eclectic, electric
evening of musical hysteria called What Were We thinking. Tunes from
The Great American Songbook, Modern Musicals, and a few as yet undiscovered
comic gems are brought vividly to life by these expert performers.
A Broadway veteran, Michael Rupert received a Tony award for his portrayal
of Oscar in the 1986 revival of "Sweet Charity." He also received
Tony nominations for his performances in "Falsettos" and "The Happy
Time." He now calls the DC area home, and frequently appears on area
stages. One of his most notable local appearances to date was reprising
the role of Gordon in William Finn's "A New Brain" at Studio Theatre,
a role he first played in the show's Pre-Broadway workshop production.
It was in this show that he first worked with Judy Simmons, who played
his mother.
Ms. Simmons' other appearances
have included Voice of America's Productions of "Barefoot in the Park"
with Laura Linney and Eric Stoltz and "The Best Man" with Marsha Mason
and Senator Fred Thompson. She was Lynn Redgrave's understudy for
the Kennedy Center's Sondheim Celebration production of "Company."
An accomplished cabaret performer Simmons is the driving force behind
"The Cabaret Series" at Signature Theatre.
Jay Crowder received a
Helen Hayes Nomination for his work on "Sideshow" at Signature Theatre.
Other Venues he has worked with include Metrostage, Studio Theatre
and the Kennedy Center.
This is the fourth offering
for Black Rock's Cabaret Series. Performances are the fourth Friday
of every month, September through May. Audiences are entertained in
the center's intimate Dance Space, and have an opportunity to enjoy
offerings from some of today's most innovative cabaret artists. Drinks
and snacks are served table side throughout the evening.
