Vocalist Jimmy Scott Opens 2003 Concert Season at Stoneham Theatre

Jazz vocalist, Jimmy Scott, will be featured in the first concert of the New Year at STONEHAM THEATRE (395 Main Street, Stoneham, MA - 781-279-2200 - http://www.stonehamtheatre.org/) on Saturday, January 4th at 8:00 pm. Tickets to Jimmy Scott's performance are $30 and are available by calling the box office.

Scott is an icon to the who's who of the entertainment world-recording with Madonna, Bruce Springsteen and Lou Reed-and counts Nancy Wilson, Alec Baldwin and the Grateful Dead on his list of die-hard fans. Billie Holiday once told a reporter she only liked one singer: Jimmy Scott.

Known for his unusual high-pitched voice, the result of Kallman's syndrome, a hereditary hormonal deficiency that stunted his growth and kept his voice from developing beyond boyhood, Scott's sweet, haunting sound is unmistakable. He started performing in clubs in the 1940s with Lester Young, was featured vocalist with Lionel Hampton's big band and recorded with Ray Charles in a legendary session that was recently re-released on Rhino Record's Handmade Collection featuring Charles on piano. It is considered to be one of the finest vocal recordings ever made. His repertoire includes such standards as "All of Me," "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Imagination," "When Did You Leave Heaven" and "Day by Day" among many others.

Jimmy Scott's roller coaster career, from crooner to elevator operator in the 70s, is the stuff of books and movies. He has been featured on the Bravo network with interviews by admirers Alec Baldwin, Ruth Brown, Ray Charles, Lionel Hampton, David Lynch, Joe Peschi, Lou Reed and Frankie Vallie. He is the subject of a new documentary about his life, "If You Only Knew," and a new biography, "Faith in Time," written by David Ritz. In July he sang at the Hollywood Bowl in a tribute to Billie Holiday and in October modeled for the New York Times' Men's Fashion of the Times Magazine. A living legend in the true sense, Jimmy Scott is among a handful of performers who have left an indelible mark on contemporary music.
