FRANCISCO CABARET COMPETITION WINNERS CHOSEN

Wayne Sutton reports that
the Finals of the 2003 San Francisco Bay Area Cabaret Competition
at HERBST THEATRE (401 Van Ness Avenue, San Francisco, CA - 415-392-4400)
on Tuesday night brought stunning performances by all contestants
and proved that all were winners. Besides the contestants the audience
enjoyed special performances by Wesla Whitfield, Wayne Sutton and
Connie Champagne.
The voting was especially
close in several categories with as few as 2 votes separating the
contestants. Combining the 19 judges votes along with the audience's:
The trophies and prize money went to:
Youth: Madeline Trumble
- she is 13 years old and has been performing since the age of 7.
She is excited to have been recently cast as Dorothy in the Diablo
Light Opera Company's upcoming production of Wizard of Oz. She is
also a teen ambassador for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.
Debut: Terese Genecco
originated the role of HERSELF in the Genecco Family in NY. A graduate
and survivor of Syracuse University Musical Theater Department, Terese
naturally decided on a lucrative career in the insurance industry.
Comedy: Jeff Applebaum
wrote, produced and starred in a Rap video. He has 2 degrees from
MIT and is a father, and engineer, a businessman and an investor.
Male: Kevin Dozier (presented
by 2002 male champion Coley Grundman) was recently featured in the
New Conservatory Theater Company production of "Red Hot and Cole."
Returning to the music world from a 15-year hiatus, Kevin sang professionally
as a studio singer and with a vocal jazz octet called "Connection."
Female: Yoly (presented
by 2002 Entertainer of the year Kitty Ultrasound), a San Francisco
resident was born in Guam. She has a Masters degree in Opera performance
and appeared on Broadway in "The King & I." Now does club work in
the Bay Area.
Ensemble: "One of Each,"
a bay area acapella group made up of Dave Bender, Scott Adler, Dave
Taylor and Lisa Gallion
Jo-Carol Award: Entertainer
of the YEAR, Terese Genecco, presented by Tyler Davidson.
Judges were: Ayako, Bob
Johnson, Chris Morano, Christopher Copeland, Faith Winthrop, Joanne
Corbett-Barnes, Ken Henderson, Lawrence Hellman, Maye Cavallaro, Michelle
Carondelet, Neil Leiberman, Opie Bellas, Peisha McPhee, Pierce Carson,
Rob Bailis, Sharon Lynn, Steve Murray, Tom Patrick and Wesla Whitfield.
