NADLER LAUNCHES FIREBIRD UPSTAIRS SUPPER CLUB
Mark
Nadler's new show "Tchaikowsky (and Other Russians)" will launch the
opening of the new THE FIREBIRD UPSTAIRS SUPPER CLUB (363 West 46th
Street, NYC - 1-212-586-0244 - http://www.firebirdrestaurant.com/).
This room has been designed to showcase top cabaret talent, beginning
with Mark Nadler, whose "Tchaikowsky (and Other Russians)" opens on
Russian Christmas, Monday, January 6th at 9:00 pm. Performances are
as follows: January 8th through 25th, Wednesdays & Thursdays at 9:00
pm; Fridays and Saturdays at 9:00 pm & 11:00 pm (January 16th, 17th,
18th, 22nd at 9:00 pm; January 18th at 11:00 pm). Both January 24th
shows are sold out. The cover charge is $50 plus $25 minimum (9:00
pm shows) and $35 and $15 minimum (11:00 pm shows). Reservations are
recommended.
In "Tchaikowsky (and Other
Russians)", Nadler deconstructs the Kurt Weill/Ira Gershwin song "Tchaikowsky"
(from "Lady In The Dark") that made Danny Kaye an overnight sensation
in 1941 when he rattled off the names of forty-eight Russian composers
at break-neck speed. Nadler examines each of these composers - sometimes
briefly, sometimes at length. Like a Russian "Marushka" nesting doll,
there are layers upon layers to the performer and the piece, which
is a show within a song. Nadler's examination of Russian composers
segues into popular songs including "I Can't Get Started," "I Concentrate
On You," "The Ugly Duckling" (infused with "Swan Lake") and eleven
other great American songs. The material ranges from standards to
new works by Adam Guettel and Carol Hall.
"Tchaikowsky (and Other
Russians)" premiered in October as part of the Cabaret Cavalcade at
the ALGONQUIN'S OAK ROOM. Those performances sold out quickly. The
new FireBird Upstairs Supper club is providing an opportunity to see
it in a limited engagement. The Russian decor, food and celebration
of the Russian Christmas on January 6th and the following three weeks
will provide the perfect setting for this show.
Mark Nadler, winner of
5 MAC Awards, has headlined at Carnegie Hall with Skitch Henderson
and the New York Pops Orchestra, at Town Hall and in almost every
major nightclub in New York, Los Angeles and London. He is currently
touring the USA in a Richard Rodgers celebration entitled "Something
Wonderful." He starred in and co-wrote the off Broadway Gershwin revue
"American Rhapsody" which was nominated for a Drama Desk and two Lucille
Lortel Awards and received the Manhattan Association of Cabarets and
Clubs (MAC) Award for Outstanding Musical Revue.
Nadler received the 1994
Bistro Award for outstanding singer/instrumentalist and the 2000 Bistro
Award for Outstanding Revue for conceiving, directing, and music directing
"Hard Candy: the songs of Carol Hall." In December, 2001 he completed
his fourth season of "Mark Nadler's Broadway Hootenanny" at Sardi's.
On Broadway, he has appeared as "The Fingers On The Keys" in "Dame
Edna: The Royal Tour" and as Pinky Pickles in "The Sheik of Avenue
B." Favorite regional roles include the outrageous hairdresser Tony
Whitcomb in "Shear Madness," and the octogenarian dancing and singing,
piano, ukulele and chimes playing Miss Mabel in "Radio Gals" at the
Pasadena Playhouse.
