THE CHIP DEFFAA INVITATIONAL ADDS DANIEL MACIVOR'S "This Is a Play" TO "NIGHTS OF DRAMA" ONE-ACT SERIES

"This Is a Play," Daniel MacIvor's hilarious one-act comedy about what's really going on in the minds of actors when they step onto the stage, has been added to the lineup of one-act plays to be presented during The Chip Deffaa Invitational, the new New York Theatre Festival, now running in midtown through October 15, 2002. "This Is a Play" will be performed on Thursdays, September 19th and 26th, at 9:00 pm, in the Chashama Theater (111 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-206-1515 - http://www.SmartTix.com/). The evening includes several other one-act plays by emerging playwrights. Tickets are $15, and ten percent of box office proceeds will be donated to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

In "This Is a Play," a group of actors performs a melodramatic story about family secrets, hidden identities and the relentless search for truth. But while the actors appear to be going through the movements associated with the story, they frequently drop the dialogue to speak aloud their amusing thoughts on the acting profession, the lame script they've been given and their less-than-adequate fellow thespians. There also seems to be a recurring theme involving "lettuce," but to say more would be giving away too much of this side-splitting comedy.

Heather McHugh plays the Older Female Actor "Auntie"; Irene Sankoff plays the Young Female Actor "Sissy"; and Christopher Beckstrom plays the Male Actor "Joey" (a mysterious stranger!). The voice of the Composer is performed by William J. McKay. The production is directed by Keith Bulla with an original musical score by David Pinkard.

The Chip Deffaa Invitational is a 25-event festival produced by Deffaa in two venues (135 West 42 Street and 111 West 42nd Street) from September 5th through October 15th.
