Debbie
Lesser brings her upbeat cabaret show COME FLY WITH ME to JUDY'S CHELSEA
(169 Eighth Avenue, NYC - 212-929-5410 - http://www.judyschelsea.com/),
opening on Thursday, April 18th at 8:30 pm. Subsequent performances
are on Thursdays, May 2nd & 9th and Fridays, April 19th, May 3rd &10th
- all shows at 8:30 pm. The musical director is David Brunetti with
Dan Martin on bass, and Scott Barnes directs.
Debbie Lesser describes
herself as "a singer from the old school of female vocalists“the Eydie
Gormś style." She grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, listening to 1940s &
50s swing and jazz, including George Shearing, Ramsey Lewis, Errol
Garner and Tony Bennett. Her singing is influenced by Cleo Laine,
Sarah Vaughan, Rosemary Clooney and Joe Williams.
Her
first musical director in New York was Bill Schneider, a pianist for
Bette Midler. Together Debbie Lesser and Bill Schneider played such
New York bastions as The Duplex, Ted Hooks, and Upstairs at the Downstairs.
Lesser segued for a while from singing standards to doing club dates
in the late 80s to rock music in the early 90s with a band called
Bigtown, then a staple at The China Club and The Bitter End. Lesser
then took a hiatus, the two connected and have worked together for
six years.
Lesser and Brunetti share
similar musical tastes, among them a fondness for the Burt Bacharach
era. They pair "Anyone Who Had a Heart," with "How Can I Be Sure?"
in this show. Other selections include "Lazy Afternoon," "'Deed I
Do," "There Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens," and "10,000 Miles,"
described by Lesser as "a dirty novelty song." She performs "Listen
To My Heart," brought to her by Scott Barnes some years ago, as a
perennial favorite.
Most recently Lesser was
seen at JUDY'S CHELSEA during the past two seasons, where her shows
earned critical praise. COME FLY WITH ME promises to deliver more
fun and feeling good as Debbie Lesser lifts the mood. Her debut CD
is scheduled for takeoff in early summer.
