Brava Theater Center Presents ASTRID HADAD, Mexican Singer/Performance artist

Brava! for Women in the Arts presents the incomparable and irreverent antics of Lebanese Mexican singer and performance artist, Astrid Hadad, at THE BRAVA THEATER CENTER (2789 24th Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-647-2822 - http://www.brava.org/) on Wednesday, October 9th through Sunday, October 13th - all shows at 8:00 pm. Tickets are $30. Astrid returns to Brava after a weekend of sold-out houses last October.

A cabaret diva worthy of her own category of performance, the sultry-voiced chanteuse comes from Mexico City's hip cabaret scene. Astrid camps up traditional Mexican songs“ the end product being her unique style of Latin kitsch performance art, which she calls Heavy Nopal. She delivers each song with intensity while adding a feminist, humorous and theatrical twist ... not to mention outrageous costumes. During one song she'll have nopales (prickly pear cactus) growing out of her shoulders, and in the next flames will be shooting from her Aztec headdress. At one moment she'll be dressed as the Statue of Liberty and the next as Diego Rivera's cala lily vendor “ all while theatrically commenting on topics such as politics, immigration, feminism, and spousal abuse. Combine that with wild "hair choreography" (hair attached to overhead cables), and you have an Astrid Hadad show.

Astrid, who was born in the Yucatan state of Quintana Roo, is accompanied by her back-up band, Los Tarzanes, as she belts out boleros, corridos, rancheras, tangos, fados, cocktail jazz and lounge lizard music in Spanish. She intertwines surrealistic costumes, song and dance, conjuring up images of Carmen Miranda and Nina Hagen meet Lily Munster. Astrid's creativity and shows are indescribable, inexhaustible, and far from conventional. The former soap opera actress' over-the-top body language and outlandish costumes translate into any language. Non-Spanish speakers will be equally entertained and understand Astrid's Spanglish banter with the audience, though a punchline might be missed here and there.

Astrid has released the CDs: Ay, Corazon Sangrante (Bleeding Heart), Pecadora (Sinner), and Cabaret 2000, Three Mexican Cabaret Divas with Liliana Felipe and Eugenia LeÑn. Astrid has also toured extensively in over 20 countries throughout Latin America, North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
