Chicago Humanities Festival's June Benefit Concert: HELLO JERRY!


A Celebration of Jerry Herman “ His Music, His Lyrics, and Himself!

The Chicago Humanities Festival (http://www.chfestival.org/) will join with the ASCAP Foundation Jerry Herman Legacy Series to present HELLO JERRY! “ a special one-night only celebration of the composer/lyricist who penned the musical theatre classics MAME, HELLO DOLLY!, MACK AND MABEL, and LA CAGE AUX FOLLES.ć Jerry Herman himself will be the star and centerpiece of this musical salute showcasing his 40 years of hit songs, performing selections from MAME and MACK AND MABEL, and joined by a team of star Broadway performers, Thursday, June 13th, at 7:30 pm, DE PAUL MERLE RESKIN THEATRE (60 East Balbo Drive, Chicago, IL)

Tickets for the HELLO JERRY! Benefit concert are: "Bosom Buddies" seats at $150 per person which includes preferred concert seating and invitation to the cast party following the concert; "Mame" seats at $100 per person which includes concert seating and invitation to the cast party; and "Agnes" seats at $60 per person for concert seating only. Special guest performers Jason Graae (Ragtime), Karen Morrow (The Mystery of Edwin Drood), and Paige O'Hara (the voice of Belle in the Disney animated Beauty and the Beast) will join music director Don Pippin (Mame, La Cage aux Folles) in a concert featuring beloved classics from Herman's treasure chest of songs.

Herman will also conduct a full day of master classes and seminar“free of charge“with performers from HELLO JERRY! for high school and college students interested in pursuing careers in musical theatre. On Wednesday, June 12 at DePaul University, three students will each be awarded a $1,000 scholarship, helping them to pursue their education and their dreams. The winning students will be presented with their scholarships at the Benefit concert the following Thursday evening.

For 40 years, ever since the success of Milk and Honey in 1961, Jerry Herman has been creating blockbuster musicals which have become landmarks in show-business history. His music and lyrics for Broadway shows have won him Tony awards, Grammy awards, Gold Records, honors for best lyricist, and a Drama Desk award, and they're still coming: among his most recent projects are the television musical Mrs. Santa Claus and Miss Spectacular, a new musical for the stage.

Revenue from this special benefit concert will support the education programs of the Chicago Humanities Festival, including Classics in Context, seminars for teachers on world literature, student writing workshops, and book review seminars.

Originally produced by the Illinois Humanities Council, the Chicago Humanities Festival is an independent, not-for-profit cultural and educational organization whose mission is to awaken intellectual curiosity and nurture critical thought. Now in its thirteenth year, the Festival brings the humanities into the public realm, linking laughter and learning, education and entertainment. It expands the audiences for the arts and humanities by introducing them as an ideal lens through which to examine vital public concerns.

The Chicago Humanities Festival produces its festival season through a collaboration with thirty-six of the leading educational and cultural institutions in the metropolitan region. The CHF is funded through grants and contributions from organizations and individuals. The CHF became an independent organization in January 1997.
