Humanities Festival Hosts ASCAP Songwriters Concert - ASCAP Cabaret:
"Her Turn"

For
the third consecutive year, the Chicago Humanities Festival will be
hosting a concert featuring well-known songwriters from the world
of cabaret. This year's event, ASCAP Cabaret: "Her Turn," will be
held on Saturday, November 2nd at 7:30 pm, and will be held at Northwestern
University School of Law: Chicago Campus, Thorne Auditorium (375 East
Chicago Avenue, Chicago, IL). Tickets are $10, and are available at
the Chicago Humanities Festival website at http://www.chifestival.org/,
or at the box office (Tribune Store, 435 North Michigan Aveenue, Chicago,
IL “ 312-494-9509).
This year's event boasts
a lineup of some of the best women songwriters working in cabaret
today. At press time, the announced lineup includes Babbie Green,
Christine Lavin, Lindy Robbins, and Adryan Russ. The remarkable Jason
Graae will be on hand to host the event, and New York performers Sharon
McKnight and Karen Mason will be in town to participate.
As in past years, the
concert will also feature some of Chicago's top cabaret performers,
and this year will be no exception. Chicago performers Michael McAssey,
Beckie Menzie, Tom Michael, Patty Morabito, and the trio Foiled Again
(Allison Bazarko, Rob Lindley, and Sheridan Smith) will be performing.
While there are not as many Chicago performers as there have been
in the past, Dan Stetzel, one of the producers of the event, has said
that that only means there will be a larger Chicago presence next
year.
The concert will celebrate
the women in the American Popular Songbook. Those who have attended
these concerts in the past will notice some changes this year. This
time, each of the visiting songwriters will be performing two of their
own songs and one song by a female composer that they admire. CDs
from the songwriters and performers (possibly including Patty Morabito's
debut CD) will be available for purchase at intermission and following
the concert. The songwriter concerts in the past have been wildly
successful, and have sold out quickly, so it is wise to purchase tickets
early.
