WINTER WARM - SONGS FOR THE SOLSTICE

Cabaret vocalist Sophia Bilides, with Doug Hammer on piano, will celebrate the season (if not the weather) with her new show, "Winter Warm: Songs For The Solstice," on Friday, December 20th at 8:00 pm at The Blacksmith House at the CAMBRIDGE CENTER FOR ADULT EDUCATION (56 Brattle Street, Cambridge, MA - resv: 508-652-9834 - http://www.ccae.org/). Tickets are $15.

Described as a winter show for the chill-challenged, a holiday cabaret for the respite-ready, and a solstice party for the daylight-deprived, the program will tackle the cold of winter and the longest night of the year (technically December 21) head on, with help from swinging American Songbook standards, humorous contemporary pieces, and evocative folk songs. Rarely heard gems by Irving Berlin ("When Winter Comes"), Hoagy Carmichael, Johnny Mercer ("Santa Claus Came In The Spring"), Fran Landesman ("The Year Turns Round"), and George Shearing will be complemented with newer, satirical works by Cy Coleman ("Rio"), Jason Robert Brown ("Surabaya Santa"), and David Friedman, as well as tunes by folk writers Lui Collins ("January Thaw") and Gordon Lightfoot, plus the title song by Burt Bacharach and a current-day sing-along by Boston-area songwriter Dennis Livingston ("Brookline Wassail").

Sophia Bilides is a solo cabaret performer, and the producer and host of the Boston Cabaret Festival. In addition to her annual show at SCULLERS JAZZ CLUB (400 Soldiers Field Road, Allston, MA - 617-562-4111 - http://www.scullersjazz.com/), Bilides has appeared at The Cabaret Connection, CLUB CAFE (209 Columbus Avenue, Boston, MA - 617-536-0966 - http://www.clubcafe.com/), THE ENCORE LOUNGE in the Tremont Hotel (275 Tremont Street, Boston, MA - 617-426-1400), and the Ritz-Carlton. Bilides is currently developing a show on the songs of lyricist Carolyn Leigh.
