KAREN AKERS KICKS OFF NEW CABARET SERIES IN NJPAC'S CHASE ROOM ON SUNDAY, MARCH 24th


Karen Akers, one of the most successful international cabaret singers, will open NJPAC's new CHASE ROOM series on Sunday March 24th at 5:00 pm (Already Sold Out) a and 8:00 pm. The Chase Room series will feature cabaret seating with bars set up for purchasing drinks. Tickets are $25, and may be purchased by telephone at 1-888-GO-NJPAC (1-888-466-5722) and at the NJPAC Box Office at One Center Street in downtown Newark.

The evening's performance will include songs from Ms. Akers' recent show at the Algonquin's Oak Room, "You and the Night and the Music," as well as selections from her latest CD, "Feels Like Home." In "You and the Night and the Music," songs are culled from such diverse composers as Tom Waits, Kate McGarrigle, Charles Trenet, Michel Legrand, Dietz & Schwartz, Johnny Mercer and Harold Arlen. Musical direction and arrangements are by Don Rebic.

Karen Akers has had a long and varied career. She has performed throughout the United States, Europe and the former Soviet Union. She has appeared in many prestigious venues worldwide, from Carnegie Hall and New York's premier nightspots (The Algonquin and Rainbow & Stars) to the Hollywood Bowl and London's Pizza on the Park.

Her concert and cabaret performances are just part of Ms. Akers' multi-faceted career. It encompasses theater (on Broadway in "Nine" and "Grand Hotel"), film (Woody Allen's "The Purple Rose of Cairo" and Mike Nichols' "Heartburn"), recordings (7 solo CDs), and two of her own PBS specials. Other television appearances include "Cheers," "The Tonight Show," "The Equalizer," "Hart to Hart," "The Merv Griffin Show," and "Ellington “ The Music Lives On," a PBS special.

New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), located in the heart of an emerging downtown Newark, New Jersey, is the sixth largest performing arts center in the United States. Home of the Grammy Award-winning New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, NJPAC has been widely cited as a catalyst in the revitalization of New Jersey's largest city, attracting over 2.2 million visitors (including more than 50O,000 children) in its first four years of operation.
