The 32nd
season of Lyrics & Lyricists at the 92nd St. Y (92nd Street at Lexington
Avenue, NYC - Y Charge: 212-996-1100 - http://www.92ndsty.org/)
opens with "The British Invasion," a celebration of English composers
and musicals that made a lasting impression on American theater and
popular music. Performances are presented on Saturday, Januaryæ5th,
at 8:00 pm, Sunday, January 6th, at 2:30 and 8:00 pm and Monday, January
7th, at 2:00 and 8:00 pm. Tickets are $40.00.
The British Invasion features
songs by composer Andrew Lloyd Weber (Phantom of the Opera, Cats,
Evita, Sunset Boulevard), lyricist Tim Rice (Joseph and the Amazing
Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Lion King), lyricist
Alain Boublil and composer Claude-Michel Schùnberg (Les Miserables,
Miss Saigon), lyricist Leslie Bricusse and composer Anthony Newley
(The Roar of the Greasepaint, The Smell of the Crowd and Stop the
World, I Want To Get Off) and world-renowned playwright, songwriter,
raconteur and performer of the 1940s and 50s, Noel Coward, whose songs
included "Mad About the Boy" and "If Love Were All."
Television and radio announcer
Midge Woolsey hosts the show. Woolsey is perhaps best-known as an
announcer and producer for public television's Channel 13/WNET and
classical music host on WQXR-FM. She has also worked as a director,
performer and choreographer in over 100 musical theater and regional
opera productions and appeared recently in Stephen Sondheim's A Little
Night Music.
The Lyrics & Lyricists
cast features an all-star lineup of Broadway talent who have, collectively,
done their share of British imports. Terri Klausner starred in "Evita"
on Broadway and appeared in "A Chorus Line" and "Sophisticated Ladies."
Brigid Brady starred in the national tour of The Music of Andrew Lloyd
Weber and appeared on Broadway in "The Phantom of the Opera." Leila
Martin is a 13-year veteran of "The Phantom of the Opera" in her part
as Madame Giry, the ballet teacher, and has been featured in productions
starring Anthony Quinn, Hal Linden, and George C. Scott. J.æMark McVey
starred in "Les Miserables" on Broadway. Sal Viviano has appeared
on Broadway in "The Full Monty," "City of Angels," "The Life" and
"Falsettos." Character actor Andy Gale appeared on Broadway as the
original Bearded Lady in "Side Show" and was recently Robert, the
Butler, in "Jane Eyre."
Lyrics & Lyricists: Coming
Up
On February 2-4, Lyrics
& Lyricists features an overview of the world of black theater of
the 1920s and 1930s, "Rhythm is Our Business," with co-hosts Mercedes
Ellington and Chris Calloway.
On March 2-4, it's "The
Revolutionaries: Gershwin, Kern and Hart," featuring the songs of
the rebels who changed the course of musical theater, with host Polly
Bergen and the Tony award-winning composer of "Parade," Jason Robert
Brown.
On May 4-6, Lyrics & Lyricists
closes up the season with two tributes to music on the radio over
the course of nearly four decades. Radio personality Jim Lowe hosts
Part I, featuring songs from the jazz age to the swing era (1920-1940).
On June 8-10, two more
legendary radio voices, Stan Martin and Michael Bourne, co-host Part
II with a look at music on the airwaves from World War II through
the postwar era (1940-1955).
Scheduled to appear in
Lyrics & Lyricists this season are Donna McKechnie, Marilyn Sokol,
Bill Nolte, Jeff Harnar, Marilyn Michaels, Manhattan Rhythm Kings,
Deborah Tranelli, Carol Woods and Lawrence Hamilton.
