VARLA JEAN MERMAN RETURNS TO JOE'S PUB WITH THE WORLD PREMIERE OF "VARLA JEAN MERMAN: ALL WASHED UP"

SHOWS JUNE 15 AND 16 AT 8:30 PM - TICKETS ARE $20

The Joseph Papp Public Theater/New York Shakespeare Festival, George C. Wolfe, Producer, Fran Reiter, Executive Director, proudly announces the world premiere of "Varla Jean Merman: All Washed Up," the newest multi-media performance piece by actor/singer/drag illusionist Jeffery Roberson, on June 15th and 16th at 8:30 pm at JOE'S PUB (425 Lafayette Street, NYC - Tele-Charge: 212-239-6200 - Box Office: 212-539-8778 - http://www.joespub.com/). Ticket prices are $20.00.

Varla Jean Merman was pronounced dead. Yes, a memorable meal involving a catfish po-boy with a heaping helping of botulism was not only a near-death experience for our international chanteuse, but also a catalyst that caused Varla to rethink her debaucherous life - particularly her relationship with bottom feeders. And, while she was at it, she also spewed out her latest evening of fine entertainment that directly poses a threat to her only friends - her vices. In an "attempt" to clean up her life and her act in the wake of the cathartic catfish cleansing, (of both body and mind) Miss Merman returns to Joe's Pub with an all-new show that raises two questions: "Is clean life really good living?" or "Is Varla Jean Merman All Washed Up?"

"Varla Jean Merman: All Washed Up" is written by and starring Jeffery Roberson, with additional material written by Matt Callaway and Michael Schiralli, music direction by David Brunetti, and direction by Michael Schiralli.

The purported love-child of the minutes-long marriage between Ethel Merman and Ernest Borgnine, Varla Jean combines the fiery good looks of Ann-Margret, the decolletage of Dolly Parton, the voice of Joan Sutherland on Ecstasy, and a comedic punch uniquely her own. The creation of actor Jeffrey Roberson, the flame-tressed, six-foot-two Varla Jean has ventured far beyond the standard drag act into the realm of true theater, staking her own claim to the heights heretofore reached only by such greats as Lypsinka and Dame Edna Everage, and delighting her fans, from Rupaul and Sir Elton John to Joan Rivers and Patricia Field.

Tickets to events at JOE'S PUB (425 Lafayette Street, NYC - Tele-Charge: 212-239-6200 - Box Office: 212-539-8778 - http://www.joespub.com/) can be purchased at The Public Theater box office Tuesday-Saturday from 1:00 pm to 7:30 pm; Sunday and Monday from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm or via Tele-Charge at 212-239-6200, or online at http://www.telecharge.com.
