Karen Oberlin Tribute To Doris Day at THE FIREBIRD CAFE

Secret Love: A Tribute To The True Doris Day
Musical Director and Arranger: Ted Firth
Director: Scott Barnes

Doris Day has always been best known as the eternal virgin, the quintessential girl-next-door. Her youthful verve, her warmth and her perky, Midwestern looks have stamped that image indelibly into our collective memory. But there was much more to her.

In a new show debuting at THE FIREBIRD CAFE (363 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-586-0244 - http://www.firebirdrestaurant.com/) on August 23rd and 25th, Karen Oberlin will pay homage to the real Doris Day Æ a complex, steel-willed woman and versatile, profoundly gifted singer and actress. Doris could do it all, seemingly with no effort. Without impersonation Æ only loving homage Æ Ms. Oberlin will perform some of Doris' best-known songs, while bringing to light some lesser-known gems that help illuminate Doris as a woman and artist.

Throughout her life, Doris Day has embodied courage. Before the age of twenty-two she had survived four years of one-nighters as a big-band singer, two divorces, including one to a husband who beat her, and single motherhood. She remained strong and hopeful, building a brilliant career in both music and the movies.

Doris Day's thirst for life and love has informed everything she touches - evident in all of her recordings. Although she hasn't performed in some years, she remains tirelessly devoted to her work for the better treatment of animals, and to her son, Terry Melcher, and her friends.

Karen Oberlin has always felt an affinity for (and has even been compared to) Doris Day, and has adored her films throughout her life. But it wasn't until Ms. Oberlin was an adult singer herself and a friend played the early Les Brown Band work, did she truly fall in love with the depth of Doris' voice and music. Karen was inspired to search for all the music and information she could about Doris, and this show is the result of that quest.

Ms. Oberlin has a fierce commitment to the artist Doris Day and, like other ardent fans, has taken on the role of missionary for her subject - to bring a more representative picture of this extraordinary talent to those who don't know much about Doris, and a loving reminder and opportunity to share the commitment to keeping her legacy alive with those who do.
