Karen
Oberlin Returns to "The FireBird Cafe" with "Secret Love - A Tribute
to the True Doris Day"

Performances on Saturday,
October 20th, Friday October 26th and Saturday, October 27th
Karen
Oberlin will be bringing her hugely popular show, "Secret Love - A
Tribute to the True Doris Day" back to THE FIREBIRD CAFE (363 West
46th Street, NYC - 212-586-0244 - http://www.firebirdrestaurant.com/)
in October on Saturdays the 20th, 26th and 27th at 9:00 pm. There
will be a $25 cover charge with a $15 food/drink minimum. "Secret
Love" initially debuted at The FireBird this past August, following
the release at The Algonquin OAK ROOM of Karen Oberlin's debut CD,
"My Standards" (Miranda Music).
The show received rave
reviews and was attended by standing-room-only audiences. This tribute
to the real woman behind the virginal Hollywood facade is a realized
dream for Ms. Oberlin, who not only exudes an uncannily similar brand
of high-voltage charm as Doris Day, but who is also a devoted fan
herself. The show's content is deftly executed by Ms. Oberlin, who
treats her subject with respect while conjuring up a living, breathing
three-dimensional personality. In the scope of her life, Doris Day
survived years of one-nighters as a big-band vocalist (primarily with
the Les Brown Band) and eventually experienced the elation of success,
as she moved through the Hollywood studio system and assumed the role
of America's unsullied, perky and protestant perpetual favorite girl
next door“starring in such cinema blockbuster vehicles as "Pajama
Game," "The Thrill of It All" (in which she replaced Marilyn Monroe)
and "Pillow Talk."
Conversely, and in complete
opposition to her screen persona, Doris also experienced a darker
series of events, which included spousal abuse, single motherhood,
the humiliation of bankruptcy and heartbreak. Her dramatic performances
in cinematic masterpieces such as Hitchcock's "The Man Who Knew Too
Much" and the noir-ish musical "Love Me or Leave Me" (a biopic of
Diva, Ruth Etting) were unforgettable, and both remain a professional
tour de force. Through it all, Doris Day (nee, Doris Kappelhoff) triumphed.
At the time when most actresses would be contemplating retirement,
she went on to have an entirely new career in television, with several
hit shows, including a heart-warming sit-com with McLean Stevenson
and several daytime chat/variety shows. Doris Day is a true survivor,
although at this point she rarely performs, and is a long-time animal
rights activist. She remains one of our most beloved and cherished
representatives of American culture.
Karen Oberlin is not an
impressionist. She invokes the essence of Doris Day through mysterious
means. She is a skilled actress and fine vocalist, with an extensive
background in theatre, film, television and music. Her personal admiration
for Doris Day, and a desire to introduce Doris to a whole new audience
is the reason that she has devoted herself to such a meaningful projectŸ
and it is a tribute to Karen that she has done it with such taste,
dedication and respect. In 2002, Ms. Oberlin intends to release the
music from this performance project in CD format on the Miranda label.
The musical selections in "Secret Love - A Tribute to the True Doris
Day" are drawn from familiar Doris Day hits as well as more obscure
songs that help flesh out the story of this complex and talented cinema
and musical icon.
Ted Firth is Musical Director
of "Secret Love," and the show is directed by Scott Barnes.
