"SCAT! A TRIBUTE TO ELLA" KICKS OFF ALMA CABARET SERIES AT CAIN PARK IN CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OH

"SCAT! A Tribute to Ella," a play with music, written and performed by Rasheryl McCreary as Ella Fitzgerald, will treat the audience to a fascinating portrait of one of America's most beloved singers. "SCAT!" brings Ella back to life from her first appearance as a painfully shy teenage hopeful at the Apollo Theater, to her solo success and worldwide acclaim. SCAT! begins the 2001 ALMA CABARET SERIES on June 19th at 8:00 pm in the ALMA THEATER at CAIN PARK (Lee & Superior Roads, Cleveland Heights, OH - 216-371-3000).

SCAT! is brought to you by the same team that produced/performed in Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill in Cain Park's 1997 season. SCAT! is written by Rasheryl McCreary, directed by Sonya Robbins, with Ed Ridley as Musical Director, Peter Dominguez on bass, and Bill Ransom on drums and percussion.

Scat! marks McCreary's fourth one-woman show as performer and producer. Previous acting credits include "Truth: The Testimonial of Sojourner Truth, Lady Day" at Emerson's Bar and Grill, and "Pretty Fire." McCreary has worked in stage, television and film in New York, Los Angeles, and Cleveland. She has studied with Uta Hagen and Anna Deavere Smith. McCreary earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Case Western Reserve University.

The Alma Cabarets series continues June 26th, with Anne Tofflemire in "Back in Business." Tuesday, July 10, "The John Richmond Swingtet Plays the Music of Benny Goodman." Continuing the series, Little Jack Melody and His Young Turks will perform July 17th. The Modern Acoustic Music Collective will take the stage August 7th, with the "Contemporary Acoustic Music for the New Millennium," and August 14th marks the final Alma Cabaret performance, "Two for the Show."

Tickets for all Alma Cabaret performances are $14 if reserved in advance, $11.90 with Patron Series and $16 if purchased day-of-show.

Cain Park is produced by the City of Cleveland Heights and is located on Superior Road between Lee and South Taylor Roads. THE ALMA THEATER is easily accessible by the Lee Road entrance to the park. Parking for all Cain Park productions is free and located on the surrounding side streets.
