UPDATE TO AOL USERS - YOU MAY BE GETTING TWO COPIES OR NONE AT ALL!
If you are an AOL user, you may be getting this newsletter one day late
- or you may be getting it twice, or (and you'll probably never know),
you might get no copy at all! For months now, over 600 newsletters sent
out to AOL subscribers have been bouncing back each issue. Both AOL
and my service provider claim the problem is caused by the other. However,
the last issue again resulted in over 500 "bounce-backs" that had to
be resent. If you are an AOL user and have missed some issues or receive
your issue a day late, please call AOL to complain. If you have an alternate
e-mail address (yahoo.com, etc.) please send it in. Copies of all past
issues are archived on the website.
SPECIAL NOTE: No MIDWEEK issue next Thursday, November 24th (Thanksgiving
Day) and the MIDWEEK discount listings will be combined into the Monday
issue on November 28th.
HERE & THERE
Well, my "cabaret binge" has slowed down considerably since Sunday.
My original intention was to pick up my mail in mid-town on Monday night
and then get downtown to THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher
Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/
) for Todd Almond's show at 7:00 pm. A combination of events made this
plan go awry, including a last minute project here at home that needed
to be completed at once, and then a long delay on the subway that got
me to midtown with just minutes to spare before the MailBoxes Etc. store
closed at 7:00 pm - and no time to get to THE DUPLEX, or even to any
show in midtown that I had not seen before. So back home I went.
On Tuesday, the 15th, I made it to THE ENCORE (266
West 47th Street, NYC - 212-221-3960 - http://www.theencorenyc.com/
) for Helene Feldman's "Sit down and keep quiet, please!" show at
7:00 pm. I was instantly charmed by this lady's opening song, a bright
and bouncy rendition of Berlin's "Let Yourself Go." Ms. Feldman has
so much energy and enthusiasm, plus a lot of self confidence, I was
surprised to learn that this was her cabaret debut. I will not attempt
to guess her age, but she certainly seemed far to young to have been
a room mate in college with Melissa Etheridge, who's song "Your Little
Secret" sort of marks a turning point in the theme of the show (and
quite possibly a turning point in Ms. Feldman's life). Very cleverly
funny songs and stories are sprinkled through the show, and Helene
showed great comic timing and delivery. A list song gave her a little
problem with some missed lines, but musical director Gerry Dieffenbach
was quick with the prompts and the flubs turned into fun instead of
embarrassment. Another high point was a "bling-bling" medley that
included a performance of "Glitter And Be Gay" that was absolutely
unique - I will say no more. The show was directed by Lennie Watts,
who has brought us some other wonderful debut artists over the past
few years. Ms. Feldman has just one show left - Tuesday, November
22nd at 7:00 pm.
Last night I left the house to head into town and was
caught and totally drenched by a rainstorm that seemed to appear out
of no where. Sitting in a cabaret room in damp clothing and wearing
wet socks is not fun (and probably not healthy) so I turned back -
and got a good head start on today's issue instead.
It all started with an exchange of e-mails (so many things seem to start
that way these days). First was a note from D Jay Bradley that his annual
Christmas show, which Jay had been presenting for over 15 years, would
not be presented this year - there were too many scheduling problems
to get his regular cast together. Next was an e-mail from Carolyn Montgomery
that her annual "Christmas Carolyn" show had to be cancelled since her
church, ST. CLEMENTS THEATER (423 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-246-7277
Ext. 29), where she holds the show annually, would be undergoing renovations
and was unavailable. I sent her a note back expressing my disappointment,
stating that it seemed like there would be no Christmas shows to catch
this year and perhaps CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE would just have to put
one on instead. It was just a sort of jest comment, but Carolyn picked
up on it and replied "let's do it!" Seems that Lennie Watts & Scott
Coulter had cancelled their Christmas shows as well, and Karen Mack
& Michael Holland cancelled their annual Gasholy Night shows. What?
Had "the Grinch" returned to his dirty ways and stolen Christmas from
NY cabaret this year?
I was at THE ENCORE later that night and asked booking
manager Lennie Watts if any of D Jay's nights were available (Jay
usually books 6 shows, so I figured there may be one that Lennie could
not rebook). Lennie had a better idea - the Saturday time slots originally
booked for the Mack/Holland shows were still available and I immediately
told him to give me 24 hours. An exchange of e-mails the next day
had Carolyn volunteering to line up the performers and MCing the show,
with your's truly getting the word out and selling those tickets,
etc. The goal was to try to give performers who had to cancel their
shows a chance to present a sample of their Christmas programs, to
fill out the evenings with some of the top new and seasoned cabaret
performers in town, and keep the ticket cost reasonable and affordable.
The result is the next item in this issue. Tickets go on sale on the
website tomorrow.

2005-2006 MEMBERSHIP DRIVE SEEKS 500 MEMBERS BY DECEMBER 31st
There are now just over 350 members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for the
new 2005-2006 membership year. If we make the "500 by December 31st
goal," we should have raised enough funds to pay down a good portion
of our shortfall in this year's budget. In order to keep our bills paid,
to keep the website running and the newsletters going out, we need an
income of at least $500 per week. We have been averaging far lower than
that since the first of January and are already $4,000 behind our projections.
Website stats are at an all time high - more readers and visitors, more
subscribers, and more pages. Please support CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE and
join this week.
SILVER memberships are just $20 per year - less than
$2 a month. Other membership levels are available as well. Just click
on the JOIN HERE button at the top of the page for information on
all the benefits of the various levels of membership, plus methods
to renew - even by credit card using PayPal! Membership donations
and banner advertising are our only means of support.
If you appreciate these newsletters and the over 4,000
pages of information on the website, and our 4 message board, our
new WebLog and want to support our planned PodCast, why not join today?
NOW FOR SOME NEWS ABOUT CABARET
In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements
of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows where
guests change weekly, cabaret news items will usually appear just once
in the newsletter and then added to the CABARET NEWS page of the appropriate
location on the website. The CABARET NEWS pages are updated regularly,
and cover all areas of the world.
SPECIAL LATE BREAKING NEWS
Here are a few items so new and fresh, I have hardly had time to proofread
them! I am sure you will find information here you haven't read anywhere
else - at least until today!
BENJAMIN & CHAPMAN RETURN WITH TWO SHOWS IN ONE NIGHT
On Saturday, December 3rd, Karen Benjamin And Alan Chapman star in the
second season of Cabaret Series at RUTH B. SHANNON CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING
ARTS at Whittier College (6760 Painter Avenue, Whittier, CA - 562-907-4203
- http://www.shannoncenter.org/
) , a showcase of some of the finest cabaret performers in Southern
California. This is a return engagement for the husband and wife duo
as they mix it up in two different programs. At 8:00 pm is Movie Music
Madness. Part cabaret, part sing-along, and part game show, it is what
you'd get if Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Henry Mancini and Alex Trebek
put together a show. Featuring Ms. Benjamin's soaring vocals of great
movie songs from the 1930s, 40s, and 50s, the audience is invited to
join in singing and competing for prizes answering questions about the
music, the writers and films. The second show, a Midnight Cabaret at
midnight, is Obscene and Not Heard, a collection of songs by Ms. Chapman
and other writers that push the envelope. Racy and totally politically
incorrect, ones attendance will be interpreted as a willingness to blush,
gape, gasp, and laugh your asterisk off! Please be advised that this
program may contain content some may find offensive, in which case it
is suggested you choose another performance. To purchase tickets to
either show (including a dinner/show package for Movie Music Madness),
call the Box Office or visit the website. The Cabaret Series is a production
of The Shannon Center at Whittier College in association with Little
Bit Productions. Co-sponsoring the series is Cabaret West: The Association
of Cabaret Performers, Presenters & Patrons (http://www.cabaretwest.org/
).

Landesman and Burt Bacharach. Comic highlights include David Friedman's

Yes, it can be confusing. If you have a problem, send me an e-mail with

everyone says makes the procedure easy. For new PayPal users, there
is a full set of instructions included with the "invoice."
ADVERTISING ON CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
PROMOTE YOUR SHOW, CD OR OTHER EVENT ON THE WEBSITE
If you are planning on running a banner for your show or CD in November
and December, be sure to get your order in. I limit the number of ads
to 20 per week. Please let me know if you wish to reserve space and
for which weeks (banners run from Sunday through Saturday). A banner
ad for three weeks can cost as little as $114 total - if you take advantage
of the 5% PayPal discount - and even less if you are a GOLD member of
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. SILVER members receive a one-time rebate of
$20 on their first banner ad of the membership year.
You can run a "front page" side-bar banner for just
$25 per week (sorry, no member discounts or rebates) with just a 2-week
minimum run required. The ad will appear only on the home or opening
page of the website, and we limit the number of ads per week to just
10. Ads are placed on the page on a first-come, first-paid basis,
and to keep costs down, credit card payment by PayPal is a must.
Performers running banners get a special listing for
their show or other cabaret-related item in every MONDAY issue of
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, reaching nearly 2,500 subscribers. Go to http://svhamstra.com/
BannerHere.shtml or else just send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com
with the single word "banners" in the subject line, and I'll send
all the details.
CABARET NEWS ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other shows around the country and around the world
can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/
). How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at
least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show,
CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or
gif format if available. By the way, I try to get information about
shows offering CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discounts up on the website first.
I am also especially interested in releases on shows outside the NYC
area.
Please send me complete information - and do not merely
e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. With two
newsletters going out a week, I don't have enough time to look these
things up, and often have to simply toss out incomplete items. By
the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases
I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter,
so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.
TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise? This has actually been a fun issue to write - with a lot
of exciting news to relate to you all.
I hope as many of you as possible will make it to the two Christmas
shows at THE ENCORE (266 West 47th Street, NYC - 212-221-3960 - http://www.theencorenyc.com/
) on December 10th and 17th at 8:00 pm. While proceeds will go to CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE, the event is much more than simply a benefit - it is
a real celebration of both Christmas and Cabaret, presenting many of
the stars as well as many newcomers to the live entertainment scene
in NYC, all of whom have been reported on in these bi-weekly newsletters
and on the website. Here is your chance to seem them all in one show!
We kept the cover price especially low to enable as many folks as possible
to attend.
Reminder: No MIDWEEK issue next Thursday, November
24th (Thanksgiving Day) and the MIDWEEK discount listings will be
combined into the Monday issue on November 28th.
And that is just about the way it was.
