ATTENTION AOL USERS: Over 500 newsletters sent out to AOL subscribers
have been bouncing back each issue - with no resolution coming from
AOL in spite of repeated promises. If you are an AOL user and have
missed some issues, please call AOL to complain. They keep telling
me all will be corrected but each issue I have to attempt to resend
300 to 400 issues using another method (in small batches of 30 addresses).
Maybe if enough of their members complain they will actually do something
about it! All copies of past issues are archived on the website.

HOLIDAY WEEKEND MEANS SCHEDULE CHANGES FOR MANY CLUBS
Please remember that many venues operate on a revised schedule over
holiday weekends. With July 4th falling on a Monday this year, this
is especially true. Be sure to call ahead to double check club hours
of operation.
HERE & THERE
It has been another very busy week for me - already catching 5 shows
since the Monday issue, and hoping to catch two more tonight and two
or three more before Sunday. But then I take a break from cabaret
until the 15th Anniversary Party & Show at THE ENCORE (266 West 47th
Street, NYC - 212-221-3960 - http://www.theencorenyc.com/
) on July 6th (I still have to memorize the lyrics to the song I will
be performing at the show). I sincerely hope that all my friends in
cabaret in the NYC area will stop by for the party at 6:00 pm - nearly
50 folks have already ordered tickets to the 7:30 pm show and it looks
like a sell-out. More details below and on the website.
ANOTHER NAME TO KEEP A WATCH FOR
I went to a show by a gal named Libra last night at THE ENCORE (266
West 47th Street, NYC - 212-221-3960 - http://www.theencorenyc.com/
) and came away awed by her vocals, her band and her songs. It was
as though Harlem came to midtown! The show was titled "A Rhapsody
of Songbirds" and was a tribute to the captivating, seductive women
in song including Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Diana Ross, Ruth
Brown and others. Libra was joined by an amazing jazz/R&B band musically
directed by Charles Carrington. As you all know by now (I hope), my
taste in musical style is broad - I love a blast of dixieland sound
as much as a quiet ballad, and rock rocks me as much as a showtune.
I especially enjoy vocals that shine and sparkle with spirit and vitality.
The show was produced and directed by ShaRell Productions' Shari Upbin
and Sandi Durell, and I begged them after the show to try to book
it for more dates. Stay tuned.
UPDATES ON A FEW CABARET FRIENDS
When I don't see a good friend performing in a cabaret show around
town for a while, I get curious. So, when they write me - or I find
out on my own - I like to share that information with all my cabaret
friends.
For example, comic Angela LaGreca has been working
as warm-up comic at the TV show THE VIEW for eight years, but recently
left that position and became a full time writer for the show, with
her own office, longer hours (and I hope better pay). But she hasn't
left cabaret completely, appearing next at THE BRADSTAN (Route 17B,
White Lake, NY - 845-583-4114 - http://bradstancountryhotel.com/
) on Sunday, July 24th at 7:00 & 9:00 pm. Angela will also be part
of the "Funny, Fabulous, Females" show on Saturday, August 6th at
9:00 pm at GUILD HALL of the JOHN DREW THEATER (East Hampton, NY
- 631-324-4050 - http://www.guildhall.org/
). And on Thursday, September 22nd she'll be at LE DOME at The Manor
(111 Prospect Avenue, West Orange, NJ - 973-731-2360 - http://themanorrestaurant.com/
) at 8:00 pm. All that plus a couple of $1000 plate benefits in
the Hamptons this summer.
Meantime, vocalist Joanne Mosca is off to Italy,
where she and her family will be staying in Umbria for a month.
She hasn't done a cabaret show in some time, instead she has been
writing and performing music in more of the country/pop, country/blues
vein. She's been down to Nashville several times to perform. Several
publishers have shown interest in her songs, and her audiences have
been very appreciative of her performances.
Tommy Femia has taken a hiatus from his regular Saturday
night gig at DON'T TELL MAMA and will be off to the Catskills in
a few days to work on a pilot for HBO, with filming from July 5th
through 14th, and sent me his congratulations and his apologies
that he can't make it to the 15th Anniversary Party on July 6th
at THE ENCORE. The show is tentatively called "House Arrest" and
is scheduled to air in November. Great news, but I'll miss him at
the party - I've known Tommy since his very first days in cabaret
- his "pre-Judy" days. That's the theme of the anniversary party,
and I had a great story about Tommy in those early days I was going
to tell!
The very lovely cabaret vocalist Dianne D'Angelo
has returned to California, settled in San Francisco, and hopefully
we'll be hearing about her performances in the city by the bay in
the months to come.
Finally, cabaret fan David Fiddyment, who was a regular
in the audience at cabaret shows and piano bars in NYC a few years
back, writes that he is back in Australia, but still keeping up
with NYC nightlife and the friends he made here via the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE newsletters and e-mails from others. He sent his
regards to all and congratulations to THE HOTLINE on it's 15th Anniversary.
MORE THOUGHTS ABOUT MAC AND THE MAC AWARDS
Here is the official statement of the new rules for nomination and
selection of MAC Awards for 2005, as published on the MAC website
(http://www.macnyc.com/
). The MAC statement sections are enclosed by quotation marks and
appear in blue, my comments appear in navy.
"There are several changes
to the Awards process, effective immediately, that the Board and
valuedİ community members have agreed are worth implementing in
order to improve our eligibility/selection process. These were presented
at the General Meeting on June 14th, so if you didn't attend (and
many of you did not), here are the key points."
Don't be misled by this statement. The changes were
announced to the folks at the General Meeting, not presented. And
don't feel bad if you weren't there because all members at the meeting
were told that the new rules were already in effect and there would
be no changes made - in other words, MAC to MEMBERS: "If you don't
like it, lump it. We have spoken."
"There are now no requirements
as to the number of shows a performer must do in order to be eligible
for a MAC award. In most cases, the only requirement is that you
do one show in NYC during the given calendar year and that you be
a MAC member in good standing. This opens up eligibility to more
members. It is also good for our member clubs in that performers
will no longer be scrambling to book 6 shows to be eligible - often
playing to empty rooms just to reach the 6-performance plateau previously
required. Now, bookers can put more people in their rooms and all
will play to bigger houses."
This is just plain dumb - OK, ill advised. If these
new rules are intended to make for better quality cabaret shows
and thus quality award winners, how can just one show be seen by
that many MAC members, much less the "gang of 25" that MAC intends
to appoint to weed out the "lesser quality" shows.
Also note, according to this statement, you need
not even do the show in a MAC member club! As of right now to be
a nominee, you must to 6 performances, 4 of which need to be performed
in a MAC member club in the NYC area (within 250 miles, if I recall).
That itself will weed out the lesser quality shows because cabaret
bookers are less apt to give up 6 nights to poor quality shows.
In fact, a few years ago the MAC board wanted to increase the number
of shows required to eight, in an effort to weed out lesser quality
shows. Now they feel that one is enough! Next year?
And what about the "DEBUT" category - is this eliminated?
Former rule was that a performer could maintain their debut status
as long as they did not perform more than three shows in a MAC member
club in the NYC area in a given year. Now, one performance is it
- instead of being given time to perfect your craft a little more
and come back a second year to make your official MAC debut, you
are now a debut performer after just one performance - never to
be able to enter in that category in another year.
"There will now be three ways
in which one's work can be submitted for consideration for an award:İself
submission(as in the past several years), submission by member clubs,
and submission by a Nominating Committee. This will help ensure
that no worthy work is overlooked and will greatly increase the
number of Award candidates."
Read this one carefully. I agree, if a member is
too "shy" to submit their own name for nomination, the member club
should be able to submit their name - as should their director,
producer or even press representative. But for the Nominating Committee
to have the power to nominate anyone looks like a conflict of interest
to me - after all, if they can nominate anyone, are they going to
be able to eliminate the same performer when they make their final
selections? Do they dare say to a performer: "We want you on the
list, so join MAC, but we may eliminate you from the list anyway."
This is a very slippery slope, folks. Next step, eliminate the second
ballot.
"The Preliminary Ballot has
been eliminated. However, there are still, in effect, two ballots.
The difference is that the first ballot (previously the "Preliminary
Ballot") is being voted on by a dedicated and diverse group of at
least 25 people who will constitute the Nominating Committee. The
people on this committee will have seen among them a majority of
shows booked during any given year and will be honor bound to vote
based on quality and on what they in fact have seen, instead of
by the general membership, many of whom have confessed to being
unable to see any more than a few shows and/or to voting for shows/people
they never saw. Committee members will be held to the highest standards
and level of integrity. Using a system of weighted balloting to
assure fairness, the committee will select the nominees to appear
on the ballot on which the membership will vote."
In other words, MAC can't trust the membership to
pick the quality shows on the first ballot, just on the second ballot.
And MAC feels that 25 people will have a better judgment than several
hundred MAC members. And how will they find 25 nominators? Will
they eliminate persons who have any vested interest in the outcome?
This means no booking managers, no directors, no performers, no
reviewers, no publicists, no consultants, etc. And who will choose
them? Another select committee to choose a select committee? Why
not submit their names to the membership and let them decide who
will represent their interests on this phantom first ballot? Will
their names be announced to the membership? Will members be able
to object to appointees who they feel will not judge fairly and
honestly? And with nearly six months already passed in the cabaret
year, will this select elite 25 be required to list the shows they
have already seen in 2005?
"In addition, special committees
will be formed to specifically deal with Jazz and Comedy nominations.
Those committees will be made up of people who frequent MAC member
jazz and comedy clubs and are, therefore, familiar with talent in
these two fields."
Here is another can of worms. There are many jazz
and comedy performances in cabaret clubs. They are seen by a lot
of MAC members. Why not just drop the comedy and jazz clubs from
MAC and give awards for comedy and jazz performed in Cabaret Clubs
- and again allow the full membership to vote on both a preliminary
and second ballot as has been the MAC tradition for as long as I
can remember. If MAC members apparently don't go to jazz and comedy
clubs, why are they included as MAC member clubs? Will performers
in the JAZZ and COMEDY groupings be required to join MAC?
We've already seen what a mess has resulted from
this "select committee of anonymous nominators" has done to the
nominations for Special Material and Song of the Year where the
rules keep changing time and again and no one actually ever knows
what songs were originally submitted. If you are going to make changes,
how about giving the vote back to the full membership on a preliminary
ballot as before.
"More details will follow,
but the Board felt that changes needed to be made and wanted this
information to be disseminated with half of this year yet to play
out, so the membership has time to adjust to the removal of some
restrictions that previously hampered both performers and the balloting
process."
>>> As you can see, these changes are now in effect
- no input from the membership, no suggestions from concerned performers
and MAC members permitted.
"While we believe these changes
are positive, they are not written in stone. The consensus is that
we should give them a chance and see how they work. If they are
successful, we will have a more informed, higher quality awards
process. If there are resultant problems to be addressed, we will
do so together. We all share a common interest in making the MAC
Award a genuine, important and professional acknowledgment of stellar
work done in a calendar year. Your comments, as always, are welcome
and we thank those MAC members who took the time to give us their
input already. We look forward to making the 20th Annual MAC Awards
the best they can be."
The "consensus" ???? What consensus? Who did a poll
on this - who even asked? Was there a "groundswell of complaints"
about the way the MAC balloting was done in the past, or just a
few folks who were disappointed in this year's results and pressed
their opinions on the board? Is this perhaps an insult to all who
were nominated for and who won the 2005 Awards?
My special plea to MAC - stop the presses - hang
on to your hats - what's the rush - postpone any rules changes until
the year 2006. In fact, toss out these rather hastily prepared and
ill advised revisions. (I was told by a board member that the discussion
on the whole matter was not started until after the MAC awards show
on April 25th - already a full four months into the year! And presented
to the board for approval on June 11th - about 6 weeks later.) Any
changes this dramatic, this radical, this important, needs a lot
more study, and a lot more input from the membership. Get a real
consensus!
CLARIFICATION
My "blind item" in the last issue about a club that will be closing
shortly confused a few folks, and my apologies to all. I should have
said a club north of 57th Street. I can't name the club yet since
there is a show ongoing there through the weekend, and the club itself
may remain open but not as a cabaret/jazz venue.
MEMBERSHIP CARDS SENT TO ALL
I just sent out another batch of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE membership
cards yesterday, which gets us up to date except for two new members
that joined today. I wanted to get them out so that the members will
have their new cards in time for the 15th Anniversary Party on July
6th at THE ENCORE, since all 2005-2006 members will be admitted FREE
to the 6:00 pm event (memberships will be available at the door for
$20). 2005-2006 members also get a $15 discount for the 7:30 pm "15
Years of Hugs & Stuff" show in the cabaret room. There may not be
any tickets available at the door for the show so my advice is to
get your order in today! New members joining now will receive a "temporary"
membership card by e-mail that they can print out and use to get in
for the party without charge.
HERE'S A FEW SHOWS I'VE SEEN THAT I HOPE YOU WILL GET TO SEE
No time to write full reviews, but if you are in NYC in the next few
days, here are a few I saw these past few weeks that are well worth
your cabaret dollars. Please note, this is not a complete listing
of shows - just on shows I've actually seen. See the MONDAY issue
for listings of all shows (at least all shows I could find out about)
that are playing in NYC - and other areas as well.
TONIGHT, JUNE 30th:
Jamie deRoy has an eye for talent - new talent and experienced talent,
and every time she presents her multi-award winning "Jamie deRoy &
friends" show you can be sure it will be a fun-filled night of entertainment.
Tonight is no exception, when her guests at 7:30 pm at THE ENCORE
(266 West 47th Street, NYC - 212-221-3960 - http://www.theencorenyc.com/
) are Lorna Dallas, Margaret Dorn, Classical Pianist Meral Guneyman,
Trent Armand Kendall, Mary Liz Mcnamara, Sidney Myer, comedienne Jane
Stroll and Todd Sullivan (violinist). Each live show is recorded on
video for presentation on her cable TV show, every other Tuesday night
at 8:00 pm on Manhattan Cable and other outlets (check your local
listings).
Blue Jupiter is an amazing a-cappella quartet that
recalls the energy and enthusiasm of that historic NYC gang JQ &
the Bandits of so many years ago. This lively group of cute and
talented guys presents an hour of excitement and sound with no instruments
except their voices, including percussion backup. The show is so
dazzling and the sound so unbelievable, you will find yourself simply
overcome with music. They are at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th
Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/
) tonight at 11:00 pm - well worth stay up up late on a school night
for!
The 2005 MAC AWARD winning THE JOHNNY MERCER BIRTHDAY
SHOW, with Ricky Ritzel and Leslie Anderson at 11:00 pm at THE ENCORE.
Its a full-fledged cabaret revue, directed by Jim Luzar and featuring,
at one point, a medley of over 30 Mercer classics. Always fresh
and entertaining, I have seen this version a half-dozen times, I
was there again last Thursday, and this is a show that deserves
every award and accolade it has received. And according to reports
these may be the final weeks of its long run. Catch it while you
can!
FRIDAY, JULY 1st:
I saw the opening night of Steven Ray Watkins' new solo show "Guilty
Pleasures - Vol. 1 - Olivia Newton John" at THE ENCORE, and saw it
a second time last week. I must tell you that this show is exactly
what "quality cabaret" is all about. There is a dynamite band consisting
of Jerry Smith on drums, Kyle Sanna on guitar, and Matt Wigton on
bass. There is the incredible backup trio of Karen Mack, Alisa Schiff
and Julie Stirman. There is direction is by Lennie Watts. If that
isn't a recipe for quality, then spice it all up with Stevens' totally
extraordinary arrangements and delightful vocals - and his charming
personality. The word WINNER is written all over this one, folks,
and the good news is that it plays its last show tonight, July 1st
at 9:30 pm. That means you all have only a one more chance to catch
it - this one you will really like!
SATURDAY, JULY 2nd:
Anthony Santelmo, Jr. continues to "Seek Out The Tunes" tonight at
7:00 pm at HELEN'S RESTAURANT, CABARET & PIANO LOUNGE (169 Eighth
Avenue, NYC - 212-206-0609 - http://www.helensnyc.com/
), with another evening of delightful song - many of them new songs
by new songwriters, plus obscure songs of the past. One of the most
entertaining performers on the cabaret scene, all of Anthony's shows
are filled with treats and treasures. Best of all, he is joined by
Nan Butcher at the piano. Always ready with a quick clue for a lost
lyric, Butcher & Santelmo are a perfect team - its always an additional
pleasure watching a show where performer and musical director are
such a great match.
Ron Poole's MAC and BISTRO Award-winning "POOLE PARTY"
stand-up and musical comedy show is playing tonight at 11:00 pm
at DON'T TELL MAMA. Nancy Witter and Sidney Myer drop by most shows
to provide a lot of laughs, as well as a bevy of comics, old and
new. The long-running variety show features performers from Stand-Up
as well as Cabaret and Musical Comedy. I must have been at this
show a dozen times already this year. If its Saturday, and I'm looking
for some clean, clever and quality comedy, I grab my water wings
and head for the Poole.
Karen Mack & Michael Holland have announced that
"Gashole: #2s" returns on Saturday, July 2nd at 8:00 pm at THE ENCORE.
It's a completely new show, featuring tunes from the Billboard Top
100 that made it to #2 but never ever got to #1! I am so glad to
see this duo return to the medley-madness type shows, and can't
wait to see this one tonight.
SUNDAY, JULY 3rd:
CATERINA'S (316 East 53rd Street, NYC - 212-355-5360 - http://cabaretusa.com/_wsn/page2.html)
is the place to be at 4:00 pm today for the second of just two appearances
by Australian cabaret/jazz icon Janet Seidel and her trio. The performance
is being presented by Kelly Briggs, and there is no cover charge,
just a $15 minimum. This is a dinner show, not a brunch show. Seating
is limited so be sure to make that reservation! The food here is Italian/Hungarian.
This week Ms. Seidel will play a shortened version of the Doris Day
tribute show that was so popular in Australia. I was at Ms. Seidel's
show last week, and it was totally thrilling. Her vocals are incredible.
I know that once you hear this lady perform you will become and instant
fan. People were leaving the club after the show with stacks of CDs.
I urge you, if you, like I, stay in town on holiday weekends, to head
over to the east side at 4:00 pm on Sunday. The food is delightful
and moderately priced. Try the Paprikas Chicken - yum.
MONDAY, JULY 4th:
Cabaret may be happening somewhere today, and maybe even a piano bar
or two might be open, but from all the information I have at hand,
most rooms and several piano bars will be "dark" tonight. But there
is a great fireworks show presented by MACY'S on the East River starting
around 8:30 pm. HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY TO ALL!!!

No second show is planned. You will need to make your reservations
for the 7:30 pm show via the website - don't call the club. Go to

I think it is usable.
NEW FACES IN CABARET TO DEBUT AT ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
I really hope as many folks as possible will make it to THE ENCORE
(266 West 47th Street, NYC - 212-221-3960 - http://www.theencorenyc.com/
) on July 6th. At the pre-show party, I will be trying out a possible
format for a show series that CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE just might produce
starting in September or October, at a venue still to be chosen. In
addition to our featured performer, puppeteer Tim Reilly, we will
present three debut cabaret performers who have impressed me with
their shows in 2005. This "test" show will feature Shaynee Rainbolt
(who is doing a run at THE ENCORE with just one performance left on
the 15th), Alisa Schiff (who just completed a fantastic run, also
at THE ENCORE) and Matt Sigl (who an amazing debut show at DON'T TELL
MAMA a short while back). This show is FREE for all 2005-2006 members
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. See http://www.svhamstra.com/FifteenthBrthdy.shtml
for details.
If this pre-show party presentation seems to be of
interest, I'll start checking out more debut performances and setting
up possible dates for the fall. You can be assured that the shows
will feature a SUPER discount for members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.
HAVING TROUBLE USING PAYPAL?
Yes, it can be confusing. If you have a problem, send me an e-mail
with the amount you wish to send and I will send you a PayPal "invoice"
which everyone says makes the procedure easy. For new PayPal users,
there is a full set of instructions included with the "invoice."

CABARET NEWS ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other shows around the country and around the world
can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/
). How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of
at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your
show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in
jpg or gif format if available. By the way, I try to get information
about shows offering CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discounts up on the website
first. I am also especially interested in releases on shows outside
the NYC area.
Please send me complete information - and do not
merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website.
With two newsletters going out a week, I don't have enough time
to look these things up, and often have to simply toss out incomplete
items. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press
releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the
newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or
more paragraphs.
TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise? This has actually been a fun issue to write - with a lot
of exciting news to relate to you all.
A great big thank you to the nearly 135 folks who
have already joined as members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for the
2005-2006 membership year - which actually starts on July 6th but
effective as soon as your new card received. Last year over 400
folks took advantage of membership and gave their support to this
publication and website. Your support through memberships and banner
advertising keeps this whole operation going and growing. Help make
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE bigger and better in the months to come.
Your financial support, through membership donations and banner
advertising, is especially important to me right now. I am counting
on your help.
And that is just about the way it was.
