CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #050608 - Monday, June 27, 2005
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News

CELEBRATING OUR 15th YEAR COVERING CABARET ALL OVER THE WORLD!
JOIN US ON JULY 6TH AT THE ENCORE, NYC, TO CELEBRATE!

If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

This is a MONDAY NEWS Issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE and also includes information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website plus listings for around the world, including shows at over 100 venues and covering over 300 performances (with a number offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE). The MID-WEEK issue, normally sent on Thursdays, will include more news, breaking stories and notes, cabaret tips, review summaries, plus listings of shows offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.

ATTENTION AOL USERS: Over 400 newsletters sent out to AOL subscribers have been bouncing back each issue - with no resolution coming from AOL in spite of repeated promises. If you are an AOL user and have missed some issues, please call AOL to complain. They keep telling me all will be corrected but each issue I have to attempt to resend 300 to 400 issues using another method (in small batches of 30 addresses). Maybe if enough of their members complain they will actually do something about it! All copies of past issues are archived on the website.

HERE & THERE
Healing hurts - that's what I'm finding out. Since Friday I have been getting around without the leg brace and as they say in the exercise world, "feeling the burn." But every day, it hurts less and every day I feel stronger and better. The brace has been relegated to a place under my bed, like some 9-armed velcro monster - it is actually pretty worn out and yet I want to hang on to it "just in case." My balance is still a little off and I have a "tippy" moment now and then, but it all feels better and better every day.

My problem is that I tend to overdo things a little - since the crutches became history on the 10th of June, I have been to 24 cabaret show, one MAC meeting, and several visits to the shopping mall (along with twice-weekly physical therapy). And a few nights I got back to my apartment after 2:00 am - I've been visiting a lot of piano bars spreading the news the anniversary show and party. I have a few more busy nights planned, but between the 30th and the 6th of July I hope to really take it easy to get ready for the ENCORE event.

I sincerely hope that as many of you as possible can make it to the two shows on the 6th of July - it has been 15 years of joy and work for me, writing the newsletter and the website.

Things have been pretty lively on the message board these past two weeks - in fact I have had to delete a bunch of messages that were posted with disregard for the rules. I simply don't understand why some folks need to make their point with rudeness and nastiness - some of the deleted posts were actually abusive and threatening. Please mind your manners - after all, this is cabaret we are talking about!

Meantime, I have sort of stayed out of the fray for a few weeks. But in the next issue I will continue where I left off regarding the MAC AWARD topic. Stay tuned.

New clubs come - not all clubs survive. I just received word that a club in NYC that recently changed its name, will probably be closing its doors in a week or so.

Bill Stephens has sent in his first two of three reports on the 5th Annual Adelaide Cabaret Festive - the largest cabaret festival in the world, including 220 performances over 16 nights from June 10th to 25th. I expect the third report on last week's shows to come in in the next few days. They are posted on the website.

I just finished revising and updating the listings for this issue, and if you look way down near the bottom, among the Australia listings, you will note that the legendary Australian jazz/cabaret vocalist Janet Seidel is performing at THE DOUBLE BAY WOODFIRE CABARET RESTAURANT (459 New South Head Road, Double Bay NSW - 612 9363 4567), Friday through Sunday, July 15th through 17th. You will note that there is a $75 cover (and that is in Australian dollars), that includes dinner. She sells out the room whenever she appears there. I have great news for folks in NYC. For just a $15 minimum (American) and no cover, you can see and hear Ms. Seidel this coming Sunday, July 2nd, at 4:00 pm at CATERINA'S (316 East 53rd Street, NYC - 212-355-5360 - http://cabaretusa.com/_wsn/page2.html)! Interestingly enough, the cuisine at the WOODFIRE is Hungarian - at CATARINA'S it is Hungarian/Italian.

I was at the show yesterday, and it was totally thrilling. Ms. Seidel's vocals are incredible. I know that once you hear this lady perform you will become and instant fan. People were leaving the club after the show with stacks of CDs. I urge you, if you, like I, stay in town on holiday weekends, to head over to the east side at 4:00 pm on Sunday. This week Ms. Seidel will play a shortened version of the Doris Day tribute show that was so popular in Australia. The food is delightful and moderately priced. Try the Paprikas Chicken - yum.

ADS AVAILABLE IN THE ANNIVERSARY PROGRAM
Only a very limited number of 1/6 page ads are still available in the souvenir program we are preparing for the 15th Anniversary event on July 6th at $20 each (the back page has already been sold). You can combine to ads for 1/3 a page or 4 ads for 2/3 page if you wish. Just send me a note if you need details. If you can't make it to the show - several have written to tell me they will be out of town - here is a way you can support the event. Deadline is June 30th.

HERE'S A FEW SHOWS I HOPE YOU WILL GET TO SEE
Please remember that many venues operate on a revised schedule over holiday weekends. With July 4th falling on a Monday this year, this is especially true. Be sure to call ahead to double check club hours of operation. No time to write full reviews, but if you are in NYC in the next few days, here are a few shows I've already seen in the past that are well worth your cabaret dollars:
TONIGHT (JUNE 27th):
Award-Winning comedienne Colette Hawley presents her new one woman show "Colette Hawley's Box Of Sadness" Monday nights in June at 9:00 pm at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/ ) with musical direction by "over-caffeinated muppet" Michael Isaacs, and directed by Trent Rhoton. Take along a seat belt and fasten it tight - and take along some tissues to catch those tears of laughter. One never knows what Collette is going to pull from her box of sadness, but you'll soon realize its really a crate of comedy! I saw it for a second time last week and am still laughing. Don't arrive late - there is a "Law & Order" parody that set the tone of the show right at the start. Over 21, please.

Melissa Mason Jones is making her cabaret debut at THE ENCORE (266 West 47th Street, NYC - 212-221-3960 - http://www.theencorenyc.com/ ) and has a performance tonight at 7:00 pm. It is hard to believe that this is a cabaret debut since the show was so well performed, and Ms. Jones showed such poise and seemed so at ease on stage. Director Eric Michael Gillett assure me that this was indeed a musical performance debut - unless you count the fact that in the reality TV show THE REAL GILLIGAN'S ISLAND Ms. Jones does sing a song. She plays the millionaire's wife - along side her husband, a millionaire in real life. With musical direction by Eugene Gwozdz (yes, that's the actual spelling) the hour seems to fly by - lots of stories of the adventures filming the show intermixed with appropriate songs to illustrate the tales, and flawless vocals.

Chris Barret returns to HELEN'S RESTAURANT, CABARET & PIANO LOUNGE (169 Eighth Avenue, NYC - 212-206-0609 - http://www.helensnyc.com/ ) with his show "While We're Here" tonight at 7:00 pm. Mr. Barrett always brings his longtime experience as a piano bar entertainer to his shows, with anecdotes and comments that bring each song to life.

TUESDAY (JUNE 28th):
Jackie Draper is performing her show "Jazzy Jacqueline" at DON'T TELL MAMA tonight at 6:30 pm. I saw this show last week, and you mustn't let the title fool you - its more musical comedy than jazz, and features Gregory Toroian as musical director and John Loehrke on bass. Helen Baldassare directs. Ms. Draper is still growing as a musical comedienne. This show gives her many chances to shine, but a nervous start and occasional jitters at times broke her concentration and timing. But she's in good hands, and it was interesting to see this very charming lady try her hand at the difficult craft she has chosen. High point of the shows is a French song, "Debit de L'eau ... Debit de Lait" - very unusual and very funny (even though my French classes in college so many years ago are long forgotten).

Greg Pernhagen returns with his show "Where's the Fire" to THE ENCORE at 9:30 pm. The lad has terrific vocals and a star band to back him up. He's handsome to be sure, and his performance can be called handsome as well. He wears a fireman's outfit on his fliers, but he won't extinguish your fire, you can be certain of that!

Boulevard East is at THE ENCORE today at 9:30 pm with a special show, titled "The Best ... Encores & More," which will highlight the group's favorites from their varied repertoire, plus a few new additions. I have watched this group grow over the past few years into one of the most entertaining and exciting trios in town. Their easy-going style, their song choices, and just the way they interact with each other and the audience gives their shows a down-home feel that audiences enjoy. I saw this latest show last week and was truly impressed with the variety of songs and the brilliant harmonies and arrangements. This exciting group always delivers quality, and the show is both fun and entertaining.

WEDNESDAY (JUNE 29th):
Barbara Fasano returns to DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/ ) with her show saluting Harold Arlen at 9:15 pm with Eric Comstock as special guest. Ms. Fasano has a new musical director, and has moved to more jazz stylings in this show. I saw the show several months ago when it played at THE DUPLEX. As usual, Ms. Fasano was a delight.

Rick Skye is back for one more time (at least in NYC) with his "Slice O' Minnelli" show at 9:30 pm at HELEN'S. Please don't miss this fun-filled show with loads of original songs and song parodies. One of the most inventive talents in cabaret, Mr. Skye's Liza impersonation is so believable you will feel you have seen the real thing - incredible. So much happens in a mere 55 minutes, you will be exhausted from laughter - and you'll perhaps wipe away a tear or two as well.

I saw the opening night of Steven Ray Watkins' new solo show "Guilty Pleasures - Vol. 1 - Olivia Newton John" two weeks ago, and again last week at THE ENCORE, and I must tell you that this show is exactly what "quality cabaret" is all about. There is a dynamite band consisting of Jerry Smith on drums, Kyle Sanna on guitar, and Matt Wigton on bass. There is the incredible backup trio of Karen Mack, Alisa Schiff and Julie Stirman. There is direction is by Lennie Watts. If that isn't a recipe for quality, then spice it all up with Stevens' totally extraordinary arrangements and delightful vocals - and his charming personality. The word WINNER is written all over this one, folks, and the good news is that it plays tonight at 7:00 and Friday, July 1st at 9:30 pm.

Chris Barret returns to HELEN'S with his show "While We're Here" tonight at 7:00 pm. Mr. Barrett always brings his longtime experience as a piano bar entertainer to his shows, with anecdotes and comments that bring each song to life.

Frank Fontana is at DANNY'S for just two nights, tonight and tomorrow night at 7:00 pm. This performer is one of the best in town - even though his performances are rare. If you want to see perfection in cabaret, catch one of his shows. The problem is, he makes it all look so easy! His relaxed, smooth, easy going style makes all his shows a pleasure to watch, and his vocals are perfection as well. I have reservations for tonight, and I can't wait, since I missed his shows last time around.

THURSDAY (JUNE 30th):
Blue Jupiter is an amazing a-cappella quartet that recalls the energy and enthusiasm of that historic NYC gang JQ & the Bandits of so many years ago. This lively group of cute and talented guys presents an hour of excitement and sound with no instruments except their voices, including percussion backup. The show is so dazzling and the sound so unbelievable, you will find yourself simply overcome with music. They are at DON'T TELL MAMA tonight at 11:00 pm - well worth stay up up late on a school night for!

The 2005 MAC AWARD winning THE JOHNNY MERCER BIRTHDAY SHOW, with Ricky Ritzel and Leslie Anderson at 11:00 pm at THE ENCORE. Its a full-fledged cabaret revue, directed by Jim Luzar and featuring, at one point, a medley of over 30 Mercer classics. Always fresh and entertaining, I have seen this version a half-dozen times, I was there again last Thursday, and plan to return for more!

Frank Fontana is at DANNY'S at 7:00 pm - see item for Wednesday the 29th.

Jamie deRoy has an eye for talent - new talent and experienced talent, and every time she presents her multi-award winning "Jamie deRoy & friends" show you can be sure it will be a fun-filled night of entertainment. Tonight at THE ENCORE at 7:30 pm is no exception, when her guests are Lorna Dallas, Margaret Dorn, Classical Pianist Meral Guneyman, Trent Armand Kendall, Mary Liz Mcnamara, Sidney Myer, comedienne Jane Stroll and Todd Sullivan (violinist). Each live show is recorded on video for presentation on her cable TV show, every other Tuesday night at 8:00 pm on Manhattan Cable and other outlets (check your local listings).

SILVER members receive a one-time rebate of $20 on their first banner ad of the membership year.

Performers running banners get a special listing for their show or other cabaret-related item in every MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, reaching nearly 2,500 subscribers.
