News
CELEBRATING OUR 15th YEAR COVERING CABARET ALL OVER
THE WORLD!
NOW - BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER!
If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably
read it here first!
This is the MIDWEEK Issue this of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, which includes
news, breaking stories and notes, cabaret tips, announcements of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE reviews, plus listings of shows offering discounts
to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. The MONDAY Issue of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE includes cabaret listings for around the world, and
also includes information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website.
ATTENTION AOL USERS: Over 400 newsletters sent out to AOL subscribers
have been bouncing back each issue - with no resolution coming from
AOL in spite of repeated promises. If you are an AOL user and have
missed some issues, please call AOL to complain. They keep telling
me all will be corrected but each issue I have to attempt to resend
300 to 400 issues using another method (in small batches of 30 addresses).
Maybe if enough of their members complain they will actually do something
about it! All copies of past issues are archived on the website.
COOL SPRING DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN
Here's a clue to how to bring about cooler weather - just install
an air conditioner in the window. Not 12 hours after my pal Daniel
and I strained and struggled to install a rather heavy unit in my
office/bedroom window, the temperatures dropped about 20 degrees -
right now (9:00 am) it is a cool 65 degrees (f) outside - Tuesday
at this time it was 87 degrees (f)! And the NYC weather is predicted
to remain cool at least through Sunday. Go figure!
Meantime, the knee continues to strengthen, after
being held rigid in a brace for 3 months. You have no idea of the
feeling of freedom I am experiencing. The temptation is to try too
much, but as the doctor told me, the knee tells me exactly when
to give it a rest. No that the weather is cooler, I plan to get
out and about in the daytime a bit more. When this issue is sent
out, and after a brief nap (I've been up since 6:15 am working on
it), I will be off to the shopping center to purchase a new tie
to wear at the 15th Anniversary Party at THE ENCORE (266 West 47th
Street, NYC - 212-221-3960 - http://www.theencorenyc.com/ ) on July
6th. I cannot remember the last time I wore - or even owned a tie!
I think it was at my niece's wedding in Miami about 3 or 4 years
ago!
DEJA VU ALL OVER AGAIN?
I had to cool down a bit before writing this, since I was pretty worked
up at the MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs - http://www.macnyc.com/
) Membership Meeting on Tuesday night, June 14th, at ST. CLEMENTS
CHURCH (423 West 46th Street, NYC). You see, I was under the impression
that things would be different this year, with the new MAC bylaws
in place and a new membership-elected board. I thought that the full
MAC membership was going to be informed and consulted before major
policy decisions were made. But it seems that it is business as usual
at MAC - making major decisions, then announcing them to the membership
with no opportunity for input and comment.
Seems that a decision to make some major changes
to the MAC AWARD procedures was rushed through and passed just a
week before the meeting, and announced at the membership meeting,
without advance notice, as a done deal - irreversible. Couldn't
the board have waited just one more week, gotten some membership
input and then made the decision? Instead, we were all told that
a new "democratic" method for the MAC AWARD nominations had been
decided which will eliminate the so-called "preliminary ballot"
- and the nominees on the final ballot will from now on be decided
by a relatively few people rather than the whole membership. So
now a chosen elite (not even a membership elected elite) will be
able to eliminate nominees that don't fit their particular vision
of quality cabaret, before the full membership even sees the full
original list of entries!
Lots more changes were announced as well. For example,
you only need to do ONE show in a MAC member club to be eligible
for a MAC AWARD nomination (note to all you award hopefuls who performed
the required six shows thus far this year to be eligible, you just
wasted a lot of money!).
Additionally, the COMEDY and JAZZ category nominees
will be chosen by two other "select" committees and the winner and
runners up announced - no vote by the membership at all! Reason
given? MAC members, we were told, don't go to jazz and comedy clubs.
Jazz and Comedy performers don't join MAC. So, why are these categories
even included in the MAC AWARDS?
The list of changes goes on.
All these decisions made under "cover of secrecy"
and the membership never given a chance to voice their thoughts
and suggestions until after the "irreversible decision" was made!
Once again the board has adopted an "us" (the board) and "them"
(the members) attitude.
My confidence in the board has been shaken - hopefully
they will reconsider and put the whole matter on hold until the
2006 calendar year and allow free and open discussion and full disclosure
of all the new rules (apparently they haven't been written yet,
but the concept has been approved) before they put then into action.
The current system, with modifications from time to time, has been
working well for many years - as long as I have been around, and
I can think of only a few instances where someone got an award who
did not deserve one. Keeping the current setup for another six months
while changes are discussed by all wouldn't hurt that much, would
it? Or is the Board afraid that their decision doesn't really reflect
the wishes of the membership at all?
Barry Levitt, I expected better of you and your leadership
than this! Board members, what about the membership you promised
to represent when you ran for office - don't their opinions, thoughts
and ideas mean anything, now that you are on the board?
HERE'S A FEW SHOWS HOPE YOU WILL GET TO SEE
No time to write full reviews, but if you are in NYC in the next few
days, here are a few I saw these past few weeks that are well worth
your cabaret dollars:
TONIGHT, JUNE 16TH:
The new all-original musical revue What's Your Problem?
by Hector Coris and Paul L. Johnson at 7:00 pm (and subsequent Thursday
nights in June) at THE ENCORE (266 West 47th Street, NYC - 212-221-3960
- http://www.theencorenyc.com/
). The show stars an attractive cast including Dawn Trautman, Travis
Bloom and Matthew Myers. Loads of fun and some fantastic new songs.
By the way, cabaret performers looking for new material need only
stop by here for some real quality finds.
Richard Malavet returns to THE ENCORE with his show
"Seizing the Night" just once more, tonight at 9:30 pm, with Ross
Patterson as musical director. If you like your cabaret smooth and
friendly, this lad will deliver. Great vocals, with heaps of charm
and finesse - quality, through and through.
Scott Barbarino & The Cosmopolitans Variety Hour
with Leslie Anderson & Ricky Ritzel are at IRIDIUM JAZZ CLUB (1650
Broadway, NYC - 212-582-2121 - http://www.iridiumjazzclub.com/
) Thursdays at 7:00 pm with special guest 2005 MAC Award winner
Brandon Cutrell (and more guests as well). Always a great quality
and entertaining show!
The 2005 MAC AWARD winning THE JOHNNY MERCER BIRTHDAY
SHOW, with Ricky Ritzel and Leslie Anderson at 11:00 pm at THE ENCORE.
Its a full-fledged quality cabaret revue, directed by Jim Luzar
and featuring, at one point, a medley of over 30 Mercer classics.
Always fresh and entertaining, I have seen this version a half-dozen
times, I was there again last Thursday, and plan to return for more!
Only a few more shows left in this run - don't miss it.
2-time MAC Award winner Marcus Simeone is at HELEN'S
tonight at 7:00 pm with his Johnny Mathis tribute. It is a well
done, top quality performance, and at times Marcus' vocals are dead-on
Mathis reproductions. When Marcus is good, he is very, very good.
High point was his duet with Lina Koutrakos. Marcus is one of the
performers featured in 15 YEARS OF HUGS & STUFF on July 6th - see
http://svhamstra.com/HugsStuffOrder.shtml
Coby Koehl is at DON'T TELL MAMA tonight at 8:30
pm. Here is a lad with unbelievable vocal abilities - and he's not
afraid to use them. His shows in cabaret are rare, and you just
have tonight and Wednesday the 22nd to catch him. This time out
he salutes Nina Simone. It doesn't get much better than this - quality
all the way!
FRIDAY, JUNE 17TH:
British cabaret icon Paul Martin is at DON'T TELL
MAMA on Friday at 6:30 pm - this is the second of just two shows
he is performing this visit. In the tradition of Meg McLaren and
Tim McArthur, the comedy is broad and the talent is incredible.
Additionally, Mr. Martin has vocals that range from deep bass to
high tenor - and perfection at all levels. Tracy Stark is at the
piano and does a masterful job of keeping up with Mr. Martins delivery.
I saw the show last night - I just might stop back on Friday. Thank
you, Sidney Myer, for opening up your room to top British, Australian
and Canadian (and more) talent. Many rooms don't offer their facilities
to non-NYC performers who don't have a built-in following. This
show is an example of the quality cabaret you regularly showcase
in your cabaret rooms!
I saw the opening night of Steven Ray Watkins' new
solo show "Guilty Pleasures - Vol. 1 - Olivia Newton John" last
night at THE ENCORE, and I must tell you that this show is exactly
what "quality cabaret" is all about. There is a dynamite band consisting
of Jerry Smith on drums, Kyle Sanna on guitar, and Matt Wigton on
bass. There is the incredible backup trio of Karen Mack, Alisa Schiff
and Julie Stirman. There is direction is by Lennie Watts. If that
isn't a recipe for quality, then spice it all up with Stevens' totally
extraordinary arrangements and delightful vocals - and his charming
personality. The word WINNER is written all over this one, folks,
and the good news is that it plays tonight at 9:30 and the next
two Wednesdays at 7:00 and Fridays at 9:30 pm. That means you all
have a chance to see this show several times before it ends its
run.
SATURDAY, JUNE 18TH:
Boulevard East is at THE ENCORE today at 5:00 pm
with a special show, titled "The Best ... Encores & More," which
will highlight the group's favorites from their varied repertoire,
plus a few new additions. This exciting group always delivers quality,
and while I haven't seen this show yet, I know I will find it both
fun and entertaining.
Karen Mack & Michael Holland have announced that
"Gashole: #2s" opens today at 8:00 pm at THE ENCORE. It's a completely
new show, featuring tunes from the Billboard Top 100 that made it
to #2 but never ever got to #1! Additional dates soon to be announced
- Karen & Michael have a number of gigs booked in and out of town
for the summer. I can't make it this week, but will be sure to be
there when they return in July. Amazing!
New Faces of Comedy at 8:30 and Gay & Lesbian Standup
& Musical Comedy hosted by Michael Brill at 11:00 pm, both at DON'T
TELL MAMA tonight means that the laughs will be heard up and down
West 46th Street tonight. I don't have space to list all the very
funny comics lined up for these shows, but nearly all of them are
favorites. Some of the comics are just starting out, and most are
seasoned and top notch. All of them add up to two shows of fun,
laughs and quality entertainment. I'll probably be at one or maybe
both of these shows.
SUNDAY, JUNE 19TH:
2005 MAC Award nominee for best revue, "TIMELESS
DIVAS! ENCORE" (Songs of the Silver Screen) is presented for its
final performance tonight at 7:00 pm at HELEN'S. Produced by Sandi
Durell & Shari Upbin, the show stars Eric Michael Gillett, Terry
Burrell, Nina Hennessey, Suzanne Ishee and substituting on various
evenings the entrancing LaTanya Hall. It is musically directed &
arranged by Barry Levitt. I finally saw it a few weeks ago, and
it's a winner - especially the amazing Mr. Gillett (razor sharp
performance, even if he spells his name differently).
David St. John has returned to DON'T TELL MAMA and
is performing his CALIENTE show tonight at 7:00 pm. I saw an earlier
version of this show a few months ago, and the improvements this
time were astounding. David is a lovable gay guy who's taste in
wardrobe is just beyond the word "gaudy" but not quite "grotesque."
As the character "Carlos" he prances around the stage, singing and
speaking in a very thick Spanish accent (or reasonable facsimile).
It adds up to a lot of laughs and good fun. Then, after a guest
performer does a few numbers (the week I was there it was the marvelous
Sue Matsuki) David returns, does a few more "Carlos" bits, pops
behind the curtain while his musical director Gerry Dieffenbach
does a solo turn, and returns as himself for neat and touching finish.
It is always a thrill to watch a performer perfecting and revising
a show to create that quality presentation he can be proud of. Mr.
St. John's show isn't quite there yet, but he certainly is a talent
to watch.
I saw the theater piece, The Marilyn Tapes, when
it opened at DON'T TELL MAMA several weeks ago but it was announced
as a "work in progress" at that time, so I withheld my comments.
I saw it again last week, and indeed, the show has been reorganized,
with a lot of the "dead air" moments deleted and long blackouts
shortened. As a result, this version takes us through the biography
of Miss Monroe with fewer bumps and jumps. First presented in Canada
to rave reviews and sell-out audiences, the show is written and
performed by Australian actress Lenore Zann (as Marilyn Monroe)
with David Raleigh (as Billy, her musical director). Music and lyrics
are by Cliff Jones. Ms. Zann holds back nothing in this show (at
one point quite literally) as she portrays both the successes and
the failures of this quite complicated personality. From the time
she was ran away from a foster home and failed marriage to the Kennedy
Birthday party and her tragic death, Marilyn is revealed from every
angle. The result is a dramatic, sometimes chilling but always entertaining
show that stirs the soul and touches the heart. It plays today and
next Sunday, both shows at 9:00 pm. (There are about 5 seconds of
nudity in this show - tasteful and appropriate - be not afraid.)
MONDAY, JUNE 20TH:
Award-Winning comedienne Colette Hawley presents
her new one woman show "Colette Hawley's Box Of Sadness" Monday
nights in June at 9:00 pm at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street,
NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/
) with musical direction by Michael Isaacs, and directed by Trent
Rhoton. Take along a seat belt and fasten it tight - and take along
some tissues to catch those tears of laughter. One never knows what
Collette is going to pull from her box of sadness, but you'll soon
realize its really a crate of comedy! I saw it again last week and
am still laughing. Over 21, please.
Melissa Mason Jones is making her cabaret debut at
THE ENCORE and has a performance tonight at 7:00 pm. I asked director
Eric Michael Gillett after the show if this indeed was a debut since
the show was so well performed, and Ms. Jones showed such poise
and seemed so at ease on stage. Certainly she must have performed
on Broadway. But I was told that this was indeed a musical performance
debut - unless you count the fact that in the reality TV show THE
REAL GILLIGAN'S ISLAND does sing a song. She plays the millionaire's
wife - along side her husband, a millionaire in real life. With
musical direction by Eugene Gwozdz (yes, that's the actual spelling)
the hour seems to fly by - lots of stories of the adventures filming
the show intermixed with appropriate songs to illustrate the tales,
and flawless vocals. I cannot believe that in the space of just
a few weeks I have seen three debut performers in this same room
do such quality performances. Amazing!
More recommendations in the next issue.
HAVING TROUBLE USING PAYPAL?
Yes, it can be confusing. If you have a problem, send me an e-mail
with the amount you wish to send and I will send you a PayPal "invoice"
which everyone says makes the procedure easy. For new PayPal users,
there is a full set of instructions included with the "invoice."

them off there and save on postage. Send me a note if you need more
details.
Thank you to Karen Benedetto for your gift of a bunch
of CDs this week.
JEFF MATSON TO BE HONORED AND REMEMBERED
Cabaret lost one of its most creative talents when Jeff Matson passed
away suddenly on April 2nd, 2005. Jeff was a songwriter, a writer,
a director, a producer and a graphic designer, in addition to a strong
supporter and friend of performers. Add to the list reviewer, because
for far too short a time he served as a reviewer for CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE.
There will be a musical tribute at DON'T TELL MAMA
(343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/
) on Saturday, June 18th at 7:00 pm in memory of Jeff Matson featuring
the songs of Jeff Matson & Brooks Cowan. Called "Music is Healing,"
performers and participants include Joan Crowe, Annie Hughes (coming
all the way from Wisconsin to do this), Rob Langeder, Sue Matsuki,
Carolyn Montgomery, Miles Phillips (also director), Rob Pruitt &
Michelle Russel. John Bowen is musical director. They will be performing
songs from "The Question W Revue" and "Private Events in Public
Places." There is a $15 suggested donation. Proceeds will be donated
to the National Necrotizing Fasciitis Foundation to help promote
awareness of this devastating illness.
And at the "15 YEARS OF HUGS & STUFF" show on July
6th at THE ENCORE (266 West 47th Street, NYC - 212-221-3960 - http://www.theencorenyc.com/
) CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will present THE JEFF MATSON award to a
person or persons showing outstanding excellence, talent and creativity
in cabaret in the field of performance, musical direction, writing,
songwriting, directing and/or graphic design. This will be the first
time the award (or awards) will be given. In the future I will ask
members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to submit nominations for this
award in the various fields listed above (more may be added) and
a committee will be formed to assess the nominations and recommend
recipients. If time and finances are available, we hope to expand
this award to several areas of the USA - Boston, Chicago, LA and
San Francisco to start, with nominations gleaned from members in
each area. Stay tuned.

Please don't miss out on another feature of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/
) - the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE CHAT BOARD - where anyone, anywhere,
can post information about their shows, CDs or other cabaret-related
event. You can also post requests and questions about cabaret performance,
and share your thoughts and ideas of cabaret. You don't have to be
a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, you don't have to fill out a form,
and you don't need to remember one of those dreaded passwords. All
you need to do is follow the rules - clearly posted on the board -
before you make a posting. I will remove your message if I deem it
inappropriate. Fully 70% of visitors to the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website visit the CHAT BOARD.
CABARET NEWS ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other shows around the country and around the world
can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/
). How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of
at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your
show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in
jpg or gif format if available. By the way, I try to get information
about shows offering CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discounts up on the website
first. I am also especially interested in releases on shows outside
the NYC area.
Please send me complete information - and do not
merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website.
With two newsletters going out a week, I don't have enough time
to look these things up, and often have to simply toss out incomplete
items. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press
releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the
newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or
more paragraphs.
TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise? This has actually been a fun issue to write - with a lot
of exciting news to relate to you all.
A great big thank you to the nearly 110 folks who
have already joined as members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for the
2005-2006 membership year - which actually starts on July 6th but
effective as you card received. Last year over 400 folks took advantage
of membership and gave their support to this publication and website.
Your support through memberships and banner advertising keeps this
whole operation going and growing. Help make CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
bigger and better in the months to come. Your financial support,
through membership donations and banner advertising, is especially
important to me right now. I am counting on your help.
And that is just about the way it was.
