Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News

CELEBRATING OUR 15th YEAR COVERING CABARET ALL OVER THE WORLD!
JOIN US ON JULY 6TH AT THE ENCORE, NYC, TO CELEBRATE!

If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

This is a MONDAY NEWS Issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE and also includes information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website plus listings for around the world, including shows at over 100 venues and covering over 300 performances (with a number offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE). The MID-WEEK issue, normally sent on Thursdays, will include more news, breaking stories and notes, cabaret tips, review summaries, plus listings of shows offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.

ATTENTION AOL USERS
Over 400 newsletters sent out to AOL subscribers have been bouncing back each issue - with no resolution coming from AOL in spite of promises. Each issue I have to resend the AOL copies that are returned by another method - 30 at a time. All copies of past issues are archived on the website.

HAVING TROUBLE USING PAYPAL?
Yes, it can be confusing. If you have a problem, send me an e-mail with the dollar amount you wish to send and I will send you a PayPal "invoice" which everyone says makes the procedure easy. For new PayPal users, there is a full set of instructions included with the "invoice."

GOODBYE CRUTCHES - HELLO CANE
After a full 3 months on crutches, I was set free by my doctor on Friday, June 10th, and prescribed a cane for the balance of my recovery. At the same time, the brace I was wearing for the same period was "unlocked," permitting me to bend my knee to 90 degrees - and was told I could shed the brace completely after just two more weeks. I have already commissioned the "tap dance kid" Michael Vaccaro, to give me some basic instructions so that hopefully at the 15th Anniversary Party I won't just sing, but do a little tap as well. I might have the crutches bronzed and auction them off to the highest bidder at the 15th ANNIVERSARY PARTY. Can they bronze aluminum?

MORE GREAT NEWS
Julie Reyburn is now the proud mom of a bouncing baby girl - Layla Page Fields, 5 lbs. 10 oz., arrived at 8:15 pm on June 10th. BRAVA! Congratulations to Julie and Thor.

NEW FACES IN CABARET TO DEBUT AT ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
I really hope as many folks as possible will make it to THE ENCORE (266 West 47th Street, NYC - 212-221-3960 - http://www.theencorenyc.com/ ) on July 6th. At the pre-show party, I will be trying out a possible format for a show series that CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE just might produce starting in September or October, at a venue still to be chosen. In addition to our featured performer, puppeteer Tim Reilly, we will present three debut cabaret performers who have impressed me with their shows in 2005. This "test" show will feature Shaynee Rainbolt (who is doing a run at THE ENCORE with just one performance left on the 15th), Alisa Schiff (who just completed a fantastic run, also at THE ENCORE) and Matt Sigl (who an amazing debut show at DON'T TELL MAMA a short while back). This show is FREE for all 2005-2006 members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. See http://www.svhamstra.com/FifteenthBrthdy.shtml for details.

If this pre-show party presentation seems to be of interest, I'll start checking out more debut performances and setting up possible dates for the fall. You can be assured that the shows will feature a SUPER discount for members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.

ADS AVAILABLE IN THE ANNIVERSARY PROGRAM
A limited number of 1/6 page ads are available in the souvenir program we are preparing for the 15th Anniversary event on July 6th at $20 each (the back page has already been sold). You can combine to ads for 1/3 a page or 4 ads for 2/3 page if you wish. Just send me a note if you need details. If you can't make it to the show - several have written to tell me they will be out of town - here is a way you can support the event.

HERE'S A FEW SHOWS I HOPE YOU WILL GET TO SEE
No time to write full reviews, but if you are in NYC in the next few days, here are a few shows I've already seen that are well worth your cabaret dollars:

Tonight (13th):

Award-Winning comedienne Colette Hawley presents her new one woman show "Colette Hawley's Box Of Sadness" Monday nights in June at 9:00 pm at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/ ) with musical direction by Michael Isaacs, and directed by Trent Rhoton. Take along a seat belt and fasten it tight - and take along some tissues to catch those tears of laughter. One never knows what Collette is going to pull from her box of sadness, but you'll soon realize its really a crate of comedy! I saw it last week and am still laughing. Over 21, please.

I haven't seen delightful diva Karen Mason perform in some time, but you can't go wrong when Ms. Mason is on any cabaret bill. She's at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/ ) tonight at 7:00 pm as part of their "Broadway Downtown" series.

Don't say I didn't tell you so - THE MONEY SHOT, a revue I raved about a few weeks ago, is sold out again tonight DON'T TELL MAMA - the last scheduled show. Of course there is always the "waiting list" - the show is at 7:00 pm, so get there at 6:30 pm and ask them to mark you present on the waiting list. At 7:00 pm, folks with reservations who aren't there yet lose their seats to those on the list actually present - in the order they check in. On Saturday, THE NEXT BEST BROADWAY MUSICAL had a waiting list of 25 when I was the first to check in at 8:00 pm. At 8:30 pm I got a seat - and everyone else on the waiting list who showed up (about 10) got seats as well.

"Broadway by the Year" will conclude its fifth smash season tonight with a concert devoted to The Broadway Musicals of 1962 at THE TOWN HALL (123 West 43rd Street, NYC - http://www.the-townhall-nyc.org/ ) at 8:00 pm. There are limited tickets available in the front and rear balcony. I have seen several shows in these series - all of them gems.

(Good bets, but shows I haven't seen yet are newcomer Jasper Kump at HELEN'S RESTAURANT, CABARET & PIANO LOUNGE (169 Eighth Avenue, NYC - 212-206-0609 - http://www.helensnyc.com/ ) at 9:30 pm; Thos Shipley at 9:30 pm at THE ENCORE (266 West 47th Street, NYC - 212-221-3960 - http://www.theencorenyc.com/ ); Malcolm Getts at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080 - http://www.birdlandjazz.com/ ) at 7:00 pm to benefit The Songbirds Project.)

Tuesday (14th):

Greg Pernhagen returns with his show "Where's the Fire" to THE ENCORE at 7:00 pm. The lad has terrific vocals and a star band to back him up. He's handsome to be sure, and his performance can be called handsome as well. He wears a fireman's outfit on his fliers, but he won't extinguish your fire, you can be certain of that!

(Good bets, but shows I haven't seen yet are Karen Dille at 9:00 pm at DON'T TELL MAMA; Jack Donahue opening at THE ALGONQUIN OAK ROOM (59 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-840-6800 - http://www.algonquinhotel.com/ ) at 9:00 pm for a 2-week run through the 25th. Note to Jack: I'd love to come, but the OAK ROOM won't comp me and I can't afford the cover/minimum - have a great show!)

Wednesday (15th):

Barbara Fasano returns to DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/ ) with her show saluting Harold Arlen at 9:15 pm with Eric Comstock as special guest. Ms. Fasano has a new musical director, and has moved to more jazz stylings in this show. I saw the show several months ago when it played at THE DUPLEX. As usual, Ms. Fasano was a delight.

Shaynee Rainbolt is at THE ENCORE at 9:30 pm, with her official debut in NYC along with her trio, tonight led by the amazing Lee Muziker. This delightful lady, fresh in town from great cabaret successes in San Francisco, is full of sparkle and energy. Her vocals are silky smooth, with a tinge of jazz and dollops of fun. This is the last night of her run - don't miss this one. Shaynee is one of the "new faces" we will be featuring at our party on July 6th. See http://www.svhamstra.com/FifteenthBrthdy.shtml for details.

Rick Skye is back for one more time (at least in NYC) with his "Slice O' Minnelli" show at 9:30 pm at HELEN'S. Please don't miss this fun-filled show with loads of original songs and song parodies. One of the most inventive talents in cabaret, Mr. Skye's Liza impersonation is so believable you will feel you have seen the real thing - incredible. So much happens in a mere 55 minutes, you will be exhausted from laughter - and you'll perhaps wipe away a tear or two as well.

(Good bets, but shows I haven't seen yet are Courtenay Day at 7:00 pm at THE DUPLEX; Steven Ray Watkins' Olivia Newton-John salute at 7:00 pm at THE ENCORE; London cabaret sensation Paul Martin at DON'T TELL MAMA at 7:00 pm.)

Thursday (16th):

Richard Malavet returns to THE ENCORE with his show "Seizing the Night" just once more, tonight at 9:30 pm, with Ross Patterson as musical director. If you like your cabaret smooth and friendly, this lad will deliver. Great vocals, with heaps of charm and finesse.

Scott Barbarino & The Cosmopolitans Variety Hour with Leslie Anderson & Ricky Ritzel are at IRIDIUM JAZZ CLUB (1650 Broadway, NYC - 212-582-2121 - http://www.iridiumjazzclub.com/ ) Thursdays at 7:00 pm with special guest 2005 MAC Award winner Brandon Cutrell (and more guests as well). Always a great show!

The new all-original musical revue What's Your Problem? by Hector Coris and Paul L. Johnson at 7:00 pm (and subsequent Thursday nights in June) at THE ENCORE. The show stars an attractive cast including Dawn Trautman, Travis Bloom and Matthew Myers. Loads of fun and some fantastic new songs. By the way, cabaret performers looking for new material need only stop by here for some real finds.

2-time MAC Award winner Marcus Simeone is at HELEN'S at 7:00 pm with his Johnny Mathis tribute. I saw it last week, and this was not the show that Marcus was meant to sing. It was actually two shows - on one side of the stage was Marcus, musical director Tracy Stark and bassist Marco Brehm, all doing a fantastic job. On the other side of the stage was someone playing his own show on guitar, acting almost oblivious of the other three. Let's hope they get the wrinkles out by this Thursday, because despite its faults and one of the band members apparently attempting to sabotage the show, it is a well done performance, and at times Marcus' vocals are dead-on Mathis reproductions. When Marcus is good, he is very, very good, but the problem here is that he is constrained by the Mathis laid back style and boring songs, and hardly gets a chance to show his real stuff in this show. High point was his duet with Lina Koutrakos - who never would let a guitar player upstage her. (Note to Marcus: You have charm and charisma. I love your vocals - use them! Cut the Mathis stuff to a medley, dump the guitar player and go back to your roots and the song style that got you those awards!). Marcus is one of the performers featured in 15 YEARS OF HUGS & STUFF on July 6th - see http://svhamstra.com/HugsStuffOrder.shtml

Coby Koehl is at DON'T TELL MAMA on Wednesday at 8:30 pm (singing perhaps songs in the style that Marcus should be singing). Here is a lad with unbelievable vocal abilities - and he's not afraid to use them. His shows in cabaret are rare, and you just have tonight and Wednesday the 22nd to catch him. This time out he salutes Nina Simone.

The 2005 MAC AWARD winning THE JOHNNY MERCER BIRTHDAY SHOW, with Ricky Ritzel and Leslie Anderson at 11:00 pm at THE ENCORE. Its a full-fledged cabaret revue, directed by Jim Luzar and featuring, at one point, a medley of over 30 Mercer classics. Always fresh and entertaining, I have seen this version a half-dozen times, I was there again last Thursday, and plan to return for more!
