CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #050603 - Thursday, June 9, 2005
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News

CELEBRATING OUR 15th YEAR COVERING CABARET ALL OVER THE WORLD!
NOW - BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER!

If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

This is the MIDWEEK Issue this of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, which includes news, breaking stories and notes, cabaret tips, announcements of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE reviews, plus listings of shows offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. The MONDAY Issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE includes cabaret listings for around the world, and also includes information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website.

ATTENTION AOL USERS: Over 400 newsletters sent out to AOL subscribers have been bouncing back each issue - with no resolution coming from AOL in spite of repeated promises. If you are an AOL user and have missed some issues, please call AOL to complain. They keep telling me all will be corrected but each issue I have to attempt to resend 300 to 400 issues using another method (in small batches of 30 addresses). Maybe if enough of their members complain they will actually do something about it! All copies of past issues are archived on the website.

AND THE HEAT GOES ON
The heat wave continues, and hopefully my friend Daniel will make it over here some time today to install the air conditioner. I was able to get someone to bring it up from the basement, but it is a but to heavy and cumbersome for me to carry while one leg is bound up in a brace (a very hot and uncomfortable brace, I might add). It was 78 degrees (f) at 7:00 am this morning when I began this issue, and now, at 10:00 am, the outdoor temperature is already 85 degrees (f) predicted to go to 90 degrees (f). Inside my "office" it is already 84 degrees. Yesterday I actually went to the shopping mall a few blocks away for a few hours to cool off!

HERE'S A FEW SHOWS HOPE YOU WILL GET TO SEE
No time to write full reviews, but if you are in NYC in the next few days, here are a few I saw these past few weeks that are well worth your cabaret dollars:

Tonight:

Scott Barbarino & The Cosmopolitans Variety Hour with Leslie Anderson & Ricky Ritzel are at IRIDIUM JAZZ CLUB (1650 Broadway, NYC - 212-582-2121 - http://www.iridiumjazzclub.com/ ) Thursdays at 7:00 pm with guest tonight the super-talented MAC winner Joan Crowe (and more guests as well). Always a great show!

The new all-original musical revue What's Your Problem? by Hector Coris and Paul L. Johnson at 7:00 pm (and subsequent Thursday nights in June) at THE ENCORE (266 West 47th Street, NYC - 212-221-3960 - http://www.theencorenyc.com/ ). The show stars an attractive cast including Dawn Trautman, Travis Bloom and Matthew Myers. Loads of fun and some fantastic new songs.

The 2005 MAC AWARD winning THE JOHNNY MERCER BIRTHDAY SHOW, with Ricky Ritzel and Leslie Anderson at 11:00 pm at THE ENCORE (266 West 47th Street, NYC - 212-221-3960 - http://www.theencorenyc.com/ ). Its a full-fledged cabaret revue, directed by Jim Luzar and featuring, at one point, a medley of over 30 Mercer classics. Always fresh and entertaining, I have seen this version a half-dozen times, and plan to return for more!

Friday:

Singer/songwriter Carol McCann returns to NYC and DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/ ) for just one more performance, Friday June 10th at 7:00 pm with John DiPinto on piano, Mary Foster Conklin doing back-up vocals, Jefferson Thomas on guitar, Gregory Landes on drums/percussion and Stephan Held on bass. Carol is like a cool breeze of joy from the mountains on a summer night - glorious vocals, great arrangements and a show that is home-spun and comfy as a quilt.

Sunday:

2005 MAC Award nominee for best revue, "TIMELESS DIVAS! ENCORE" (Songs of the Silver Screen) is presented every Sunday night at 7:00 pm at HELEN'S RESTAURANT, CABARET & PIANO LOUNGE (169 Eighth Avenue, NYC - 212-206-0609 - http://www.helensnyc.com/ ). Produced by Sandi Durell & Shari Upbin, the show stars Eric Michael Gillett, Terry Burrell, Nina Hennessey, Suzanne Ishee and substituting on various evenings the entrancing LaTanya Hall. It is musically directed & arranged by Barry Levitt. I finally saw it this past Sunday, and it's a winner - especially the amazing Mr. Gillett (razor sharp performance, even if he spells his name differently). Only 2 shows left - go see it!

Monday:

Award-Winning comedienne Colette Hawley presents her new one woman show "Colette Hawley's Box Of Sadness" Monday nights in June at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/ ) with musical direction by Michael Isaacs, and directed by Trent Rhoton. Take along a seat belt and fasten it tight - and take along some tissues to catch those tears of laughter. One never knows what Collette is going to pull from her box of sadness, but you'll soon realize its really a crate of comedy! Over 21, please.

More recommendations in the next issue.

HAVING TROUBLE USING PAYPAL?
Yes, it can be confusing. If you have a problem, send me an e-mail with the amount you wish to send and I will send you a PayPal "invoice" which everyone says makes the procedure easy. For new PayPal users, there is a full set of instructions included with the "invoice."

JEFF MATSON TO BE HONORED AND REMEMBERED AT HOTLINE SHOW
Cabaret lost one of its most creative talents when Jeff Matson passed away suddenly on April 2nd, 2005. Jeff was a songwriter, a writer, a director, a producer and a graphic designer, in addition to a strong supporter and friend of performers. Add to the list reviewer, because for far too short a time he served as a reviewer for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.

Jeff had written to me in February to let me know that he had left the corporate world and would be writing, producing and directing cabaret events, plus offering his services as a graphic designer to the cabaret world and beyond. At that very moment it was in the first planning stages of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE'S 15th Anniversary Party and I immediately asked Jeff if he would assist me in the project. I had no funds, but offered him a free banner ad on the website to help his new business get off the ground in return.

Only a few weeks later, on the 10th of March, I had my accident. The very next night, the 11th of March, was the opening of the cabaret room at THE ENCORE (266 West 47th Street, NYC - 212-221-3960 - http://www.theencorenyc.com/ ), with two of my favorite ladies premiering their shows, July Reyburn and Lumiri Tubo. As soon as I got home from the hospital I e-mailed Jeff and asked if he could review the two shows in my place, and when he agreed, I e-mailed Lennie Watts to let him know that Jeff would be taking my places at the already sold-out shows.

Jeff's reviews arrived a few days later, and I was thrilled with the depth of the writing, capturing the "look and feel" of each show. (You can read them for yourself in the REVIEWS section - NYC Reviews - on the website). But then tragedy struck in the form of a rare virus (necrotizing fasciitis) that hospitalized Jeff, resulting in his death within days.

There will be a musical tribute at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/ ) on Saturday, June 18th at 7:00 pm in memory of Jeff Matson featuring the songs of Jeff Matson & Brooks Cowan. Called "Music is Healing," performers and participants include Joan Crowe, Annie Hughes (coming all the way from Wisconsin to do this), Rob Langeder, Sue Matsuki, Carolyn Montgomery, Miles Phillips (also director), Rob Pruitt & Michelle Russel. John Bowen is musical director. They will be performing songs from "The Question W Revue" and "Private Events in Public Places." There is a $15 suggested donation. Proceeds will be donated to the National Necrotizing Fasciitis Foundation to help promote awareness of this devastating illness.

And at the "15 YEARS OF HUGS & STUFF" show on July 6th at THE ENCORE (266 West 47th Street, NYC - 212-221-3960 - http://www.theencorenyc.com/ ) CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will present THE JEFF MATSON award to a person or persons showing outstanding excellence, talent and creativity in cabaret in the field of performance, musical direction, writing, songwriting, directing and/or graphic design. This will be the first time the award (or awards) will be given. In the future I will ask members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to submit nominations for this award in the various fields listed above (more may be added) and a committee will be formed to assess the nominations and recommend recipients. If time and finances are available, we hope to expand this award to several areas of the USA - Boston, Chicago, LA and San Francisco to start, with nominations gleaned from members in each area. Stay tuned.

NEW FACES IN CABARET
At the pre-show party, I will be trying out a possible format for a show series that CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE just might produce starting in September or October, at a venue still to be chosen. It will feature debut cabaret performers who impress me with their shows in 2005. Shaynee Rainbolt (who is doing a run at THE ENCORE (266 West 47th Street, NYC - 212-221-3960 - http://www.theencorenyc.com/ ) with just one performance left on the 15th) and Alison Schiff (who just completed a fantastic run, also at THE ENCORE) have already agreed to appear, and one or two more debut performers have been invited as well. If the pre-show party presentation seems to be of interest, I'll start checking out more debut shows and setting up possible dates for the fall. You can be assured that the shows will feature a SUPER discount for members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.

CABARET NEWS ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other shows around the country and around the world can be found on the BREAKING NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ ). How do you get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. By the way, I try to get information about shows offering CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discounts up on the website first. I am also especially interested in releases on shows outside the NYC area.

Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. With two newsletters going out a week, I don't have enough time to look these things up, and often have to simply toss out incomplete items. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.

TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise? This has actually been a fun issue to write - with a lot of exciting news to relate to you all.

I have a few more items, but it is noon, it is 86 degrees (f) outside but 89 degrees (f) inside - the computer and its accessories, especially the monitor, give off a lot of heat - so I have to quit. I might just try to wrestle that air-conditioner into the window on my own - or return to the mall.

Tonight I am off to Manhattan to help Marcus Simeone celebrate his birthday at his Johnny Mathis tribute show at 7:00 pm at HELEN'S RESTAURANT, CABARET & PIANO LOUNGE (169 Eighth Avenue, NYC - 212-206-0609 - http://www.helensnyc.com/ ). What happens next is anyone's guess. My knee says "go home," but my brain says "party on." The ad posters for my party are supposed to be delivered tonight, and I may just do some cabaret-hopping to distribute them.

A great big thank you to the more than 80 folks who have already joined as members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for the 2005-2006 membership year - which actually starts on July 6th but effective as you card received. Last year over 400 folks took advantage of membership and gave their support to this publication and website. Your support through memberships and banner advertising keeps this whole operation going and growing. Help make CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE bigger and better in the months to come. Your financial support, through membership donations and banner advertising, is especially important to me right now. I am counting on your help.

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
