SOMETIMES BAD NEWS BRINGS ALONG WITH IT GOOD NEWS
You all know the phrase by now: "As with all live entertainment events,
performers are subject to change." This is especially true when you
are announcing performers for a benefit, where they are contributing
their talents for free. So the bad news (for NYC anyway) is that the
marvelous Baby Jane Dexter got a gig in Los Angeles for July 6th through
9th and had to drop out of the lineup for our 15th ANNIVERSARY "15
YEARS OF HUGS & STUFF" show at THE ENCORE (266 West 47th Street, NYC
- 212-221-3960 - http://www.theencorenyc.com/
) on July 6th. (Its good news for folks in Los Angeles). But the good
news for NYC and members of CABARET HOTLINE is that 2005 MAC/HANSON
Award winner Lucille Carr-Kaffashan has been added to the lineup,
and another favorite, the award winning Carolyn Montgomery has also
volunteered to join the list. More details below.
I FEEL A SONG COMING ON
Not that I count myself in the same class as Scott Siegel and Wayman
Wong, but I have heard both of them sing at shows they have been involved
in, and I think that I can do it too. At least I can't sing much worse
then them. So I am working on a song or two to perform at the 15 YEARS
OF HUGS & STUFF show on July 6th. Now, I will do a surprise test performance
one of these nights at a piano bar and if all goes well, I'll have
my turn to shine at the show on the 6th of July. And if that goes
well, Sidney Myer has already promised me the coveted Mondays at 5:00
pm time-slot in August at DON'T TELL MAMA. Good times!
HERE'S A SHOW I WANT YOU TO SEE
A few weeks ago I wrote you all about a youngster named Matt Sigl
who was doing a fantastic debut show at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West
46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/
). I hope you followed my advice and caught that show. Now I have
another Stu's New Faces choice, this time at THE ENCORE (266 West
47th Street, NYC - 212-221-3960 - http://www.theencorenyc.com/
). The lady's name is Alisa Schiff, and her show is called "Mama Said
... the songs of Cass Elliot." The show has musical direction by Steven
Ray Watkins and direction by Lennie Watts with appropriate and non-intrusive
lights and sound by Michael Barbieri (don't you hate it when the lighting
upstages the performer?). I say this without hesitation: I have never
seen a debut show that was so perfect in every respect: great writing,
great song choices, fantastic vocals, inspired arrangements, performance
perfection! Simply said, it is one heck-of-a show! Even the backup
vocalists, Mason Roberts and Julie Stirman did their parts so well,
you hardly knew they were there, yet deep down you knew how important
they were to the show (don't you hate it when backup singers either
mug it up or else look bored when they aren't singing?). I rarely
tell a performer after a show how much I was moved, but after this
one I gave Ms. Schiff (and her musical director, too) a big hug. If
you want to know how good cabaret can be, you must treat yourself
and make a reservation for this one - two dates left: Friday, June
3rd at 7:00 pm and Monday, June 6th at 7:00 pm. Just a $10 cover charge
(only $5 if you are a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE or MAC - how
great is that!) and a $12 food/drink minimum. Anyone else doing a
debut in NYC this year now has a high standard to surpass.
FREE TICKETS AVAILABLE FOR HAYDEN TEE SHOW AT NJPAC
Award-winning Hayden Tee from New Zealand, the recipient of the 2002
New York Award at the Sydney Cabaret Convention, has been wowing audiences
throughout Australia and more recently in New York with his chameleon-like
skills as singer, actor and comedian. He will be appearing at The
Chase Room at the NEW JERSEY PERFORMING ARTS CENTER (One Center Street,
Newark, NJ - 888-466-5722 - http://www.njpac.org/
) on Sunday, June 5th at 5:00 pm. Tickets are $45, but we have been
offered 4 pairs of tickets to the show to distribute to subscribers
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. If you would like to obtain one pair, send
me an e-mail at stuhamstra@svhamstra.com and if you are in the first
four to respond, I'll send you information on how to get them. Please,
serious entries only. Please promise that you will actually make use
of the tickets.
This will be Hayden's only USA appearance, as he
has been cast as Marius in the 21st Anniversary production of LES
MIS in London's West End. In fact, he's flying into NYC on Saturday,
doing the show at NJPAC on Sunday, then flying back to London on
Monday to resume rehearsals. His appearance at NJPAC was booked
over a year ago and he's making good on it but not staying around
to do any other engagements. The lad is a super-talent!
HAVING TROUBLE USING PAYPAL?
Yes, it can be confusing. If you have a problem, send me an e-mail
with the amount you wish to send and I will send you a PayPal "invoice"
which everyone says makes the procedure easy. For new PayPal users,
there is a full set of instructions included with the "invoice."

CABARET NEWS ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other shows around the country and around the world
can be found on the BREAKING NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/
). How do you get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of
at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your
show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in
jpg or gif format if available. By the way, I try to get information
about shows offering CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discounts up on the website
first. I am also especially interested in releases on shows outside
the NYC area.
Please send me complete information - and do not
merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website.
With two newsletters going out a week, I don't have enough time
to look these things up, and often have to simply toss out incomplete
items. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press
releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the
newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or
more paragraphs.
TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise? This has actually been a fun issue to write - with a lot
of exciting news to relate to you all.
Tonight I am off to Manhattan to catch Seth Rudetsky's
Broadway Chatterbox show at 6:00 pm at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West
46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/
) - leaving a few minutes early to get to THE ENCORE (266 West 47th
Street, NYC - 212-221-3960 - http://www.theencorenyc.com/
) for the new all-original musical revue What's Your Problem? by
Hector Coris and Paul L. Johnson that opens tonight at 7:00 pm.
Then back to DON'T TELL MAMA for Carol McCann's show at 8:30 pm.
It's lucky that they serve such great food at THE ENCORE so I won't
have to take time out between shows for dinner.
A great big thank you to the more than 70 folks who
have already joined as members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for the
2005-2006 membership year - which actually starts on July 6th but
effective as you card received. Last year over 400 folks took advantage
of membership and gave their support to this publication and website.
Your support through memberships and banner advertising keeps this
whole operation going and growing. Help make CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
bigger and better in the months to come. Your financial support,
through membership donations and banner advertising, is especially
important to me right now. I am counting on your help.
