News
CELEBRATING OUR 15th YEAR COVERING CABARET ALL OVER
THE WORLD!
NOW - BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER!
If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably
read it here first!
This is the MIDWEEK Issue this of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, which includes
news, breaking stories and notes, cabaret tips, announcements of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE reviews, plus listings of shows offering discounts
to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. The MONDAY Issue of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE includes cabaret listings for around the world, and
also includes information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website.
ATTENTION AOL USERS: Over 400 newsletters sent out to AOL subscribers
have been bouncing back each issue - with no resolution coming from
AOL in spite of repeated promises. All copies of past issues are archived
on the website.
It has been another busy time here - the end of our spring benefit
drive meant sending out a lot of thank you e-mails to contributors.
And since a number of folks purchased new 2005-2006 memberships, a
lot of e-mails had to be sent out to them as well. I had to add all
new membership pages for the new membership year, and now I have to
add all the members names and website links there as well. Another
big thank you to all who opened their hearts and wallets to help me
get through a lot of expensive changes to my life.
Next project is the summer benefit show (details
below) on July 6th, and a team has been formed (with one or two
more members to be added) to help in the planning and details for
that show. I am collecting all the anticipated expenses and working
out a budget for the event. I have a list of about 15 folks who
I would like to take part, which has to be trimmed to about 7 or
8. Invitations will be going out this weekend. If this show is successful,
we might do a second show in the fall. See more details below and
in future issues and on the websIte.
Regarding my knee, it appears to be healing slowly
but surely. I am not permitted to put full weight on both legs,
which means I can get around the apartment fairly easily without
using the crutches, as long as I keep the brace on. Which means
I still need the crutches to climb stairs and navigate curbs, etc.,
since the knee cannot be bent (at least beyond 30 degrees at this
point - the brace is adjustable). Next week I begin physical therapy.
In this connection, using crutches to navigate around
Manhattan - especially the stairways of the subway stations - is
quite tiring and difficult, so I am not able to attend as many shows
as I would like. Please don't ask me to promise to see your show
- I will try but I hate to promise, since I hate to disappoint you.
This is especially true on weekends, since the subway stations and
tracks in my part of Queens are undergoing extensive repairs and
renovations, and many times trains are rerouted or on limited service.
Last weekend there was no local service from my station to Manhattan,
so to get to town I would have had to travel away from Manhattan
to the next express stop, go up the stairs, across the station and
down another set of stairs to catch the express to back town. This
adds about 20 minutes to a 40-minute trip, and a lot of extra physical
effort.
TOP 10 REASONS WHY WALKING WITH CRUTCHES ISN'T TOTALLY MISERABLE
10. Panhandlers stay away - apparently they think you might be the
competition.
9. Even the local whackos stay away - must be something
intimidating about a guy carrying two aluminum sticks.
8. NYC busses all kneel to you - how great is that!
Huge, multi-ton machines bow to allow you to enter - and leave -
giving a bleeping tone as they genuflect.
7. Tourists allow you to pass them on the sidewalk.
Instead of the usual practice of walking slowly six abreast, making
it impossible to pass, the clickity click of the crutches makes
them immediately break formation and give you a pathway. By the
way, at my speed, tourists are the only humans in NYC that I can
actually walk faster than!
6. Other similarly equipped folks smile knowingly
at you - that is others on crutches, walking with canes, and having
difficulty on stairways. Its a warm, sympathetic smile. No words
need to be exchanged.
5. Folks hold doors open for you - something rare
here in NYC.
4. You can always get a seat on the subway or bus!
People actually leap up and move to a new seat to make available
to you the specially marked seats. They somehow don't seem to do
this for pregnant women, from reports I have heard.
3. You become more knowledgeable about subway and
bus routes, especially noting those subway stations that have elevators
and escalators. There are only a few, and many times they aren't
working. But you at least know where they are.
2. For me personally, I can discover immediately
who has been reading the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE and who has not.
Big clue? My accident was on March 10th. I have been writing about
it in nearly every issue since then. So, when on May 1st a cabaret
personality asks "What happened to you?" I know immediately that
they haven't been paying attention. I certainly will remember that
next time they ask me to plug their show.
1. And, finally, for me personally, I get to paraphrase
a great line from Nancy Witter's "Dignity Check" comedy show. When
cabaret people now ask me "What happened to you?" I can relish in
their shock and dismay when I tell them that "A wolf got my leg!"
Good times!
SHOWS SEEN LATELY
I wanted to include several reviews with this issue, but because of
space limitations, here are just a few. I chose them because they
are on-going runs and you still have a chance to catch them in the
days and weeks ahead:
"THE MONEY SPOT 2" REVUE at DON'T TELL MAMA
Chris Andersson and Tim Herman have done it again
- and more. Two years ago they took the town by storm with the revue
"The Money Spot," garnering great reviews and ending their run with
sell-out houses. As soon as the word gets out on this show, expect
the same - and more! The show is playing at DON'T TELL MAMA (343
West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/
) and is described as "a sexy romp through popular music from the
roaring 20s through the gay 90s" and features a sparking cast and
a great little band, led by Jono Mainelli. For 50 exciting minutes
the kids sing about a dozen great tunes - all with a suggestive
sexual twist - and a bouncy disco-style medley that will have you
singing and swinging along. Never explicit, but always very suggestive,
the double entendres fly everywhere. Dressed in Vegas-style shiny
gold costumes, Kevin Albert, Chris Andersson, Tim Herman, Erica
Kane and Cheryl Orsini sing and dance their way through the show.
Barely pausing for a breath, song follows song. This is a full,
slam-dunk revue - the kind one used to see in the big rooms in town
15 to 20 years ago. Even after the big production number that ended
the show, the audience was begging for more. I loved every exciting
minute.
"THE MONEY SHOT 2" continues at MAMA'S with remaining
shows scheduled for Thursday, May 12th at 11:00 pm, Mondays, May
16th, 23rd & 30th, and June 13th at 7:00 pm, and June 9th at 8:30
pm. There is a $15 cover, 2-drink minimum.
ANGELO CILIA & MATT LEAHY - "OPPOSITES ATTRACT" AT THE ENCORE
Two very popular singers, both featured soloists
from the NYC Gay Men's Chorus, have joined forces in a show called
"Opposites Attract," playing at THE ENCORE (266 West 47th Street,
NYC - 212-221-3960 - http://www.theencorenyc.com/
). Angelo Cilia and Matt Leahy are probably opposites when it comes
to their taste in music, art and foods (and men), but they are quite
similar when it comes to talent, vocals and the ability to put on
an entertaining evening of glorious song. They are great on their
solo numbers, but when they get to the duets they are awesome! The
song list is varied - ranging from Cole Porter to Stephen Sondheim
to Joni Mitchell to Harry Chapin, and more. Once again, Rick Jensen's
arrangements shine and sparkle. I saw the show on opening night,
so there were a few rough edges and missed cues, but the charm and
personalities of these two fun folks easily help you glide over
the few bumps and glitches.
"Opposites Attract" has just two more performances
left at THE ENCORE, on Friday, May 13th at 9:30 pm and Tuesday,
May 17th at 7:00 pm. There is a $15 cover, $12 food/drink minimum.
$10 cover for members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.
I also saw the Jamie deRoy & friends show, the Johnny Mercer Birthday
Party with Leslie Anderson & Ricky Ritzel as well as Karen Koehler
& Greta, all at THE ENCORE, and D.C. Anderson, Reagan Stone at DON'T
TELL MAMA in the past few weeks. Comments on all of these shows will
probably be posted on the website directly instead of included in
the HOTLINE because of space restraints.

jpg or gif format if available. By the way, I try to get information
about shows offering CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discounts up on the website
first. I am also especially interested in releases on shows outside
the NYC area.
Please send me complete information - and do not
merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website.
With two newsletters going out a week, I don't have enough time
to look these things up, and often have to simply toss out incomplete
items. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press
releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the
newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or
more paragraphs.
TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise? This has actually been a fun issue to write - with a lot
of exciting news to relate to you all.
Once again a great big thank you to the nearly 400
folks who have joined and/or rejoined CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE as
members for the 2004-2005 membership year, which runs until July
5th. Over 450 joined last membership year. Your support through
memberships and banner advertising keeps this whole operation going
and growing. Help make CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE bigger and better
in the months to come. Your financial support, through membership
donations and banner advertising, is especially important to me
right now. I am counting on your help.
And that is just about the way it was.
