SAD NEWS - PHILIP A. CAMPANELLA
We received word over the weekend that Philip A. Campanella, the Executive Director of the SINGERS FORUM, passed away suddenly on Thursday morning, May 5th. No other details have been provided at press time. We will be posting further information on the website when received.

Mr. Campanella directed and produced dozens of performances including the recent birthday tribute to Andy Anselmo, founder of THE SINGERS FORUM (http://www.singersforum.org/), starring Liza Minnelli, Mandy Patinkin, Julie Harris and Joanne Woodward. For many years Mr. Campanella served as Musical Director and Composer-in-Residence for New York's Roundabout Theatre, supervising music for over 100 productions with artists including Jane Alexander, Anthony Hopkins, Charles Grodin, Jim Dale, Esther Rolle and Uta Hagen. Among these many productions were a record-breaking revival of Harold Rome's PINS AND NEEDLES, later broadcast as a CBS special, and Lindsay Anderson's revival of LOOK BACK IN ANGER, with Malcolm MacDowell, subsequently produced as a Showtime special. Mr. Campanella's music and lyrics for JAMES JOYCE'S DUBLIN have been published by Samuel French. He appeared in concert with many celebrities, including Maxene Andrews of the legendary Andrews Sisters, and conducted Geraldine Fitzgerald's STREETSONGS throughout the country, with a memorable performance at the White House.

The Annual Andy Anselmo Achievement Awards gala, planned for tonight at the ALLEN ROOM AT TIME WARNER CENTER (Columbus Circle, Broadway at 60th Street, NYC - CenterCharge: 212-721-6500 - http://www.jazzatlincolncenter.org/ ) will go forward as scheduled, as per the wishes of Mr. Campanella's family.

ANOTHER JAM-PACKED ISSUE TODAY!
Once again here is another jam-packed issue, with a bunch of new cabaret venues appearing for the first time as well. I wanted to include several reviews with this issue, but because of space limitations, here are just three. I chose them because they are on-going runs and you still have a chance to catch them in the days and weeks ahead:

WENDY LANE BAILEY "IN THESE SHOES ..." AT THE DUPLEX

She has only one more show left in this series, and that's Wednesday, May 11th at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/ ), which means only about 70 seats available, which means that if you want to see a great show by a terrific singer, you have to make that reservation today. Ms. Bailey has come a long way in the few years I have known her and seen her perform. Newly transplanted to the NYC area from Washington DC (where she was one of the founders of DCCN (DC Cabaret Network), Ms. Bailey, through this show, has become a true asset to the NYC cabaret scene. Her vocals are heavenly, even when she's being devilish, and her command of both the stage and her material is enthralling. Rick Jensen's arrangements, Sally Mayes' direction, combined with Ms. Bailey's skills as an entertainer, make this a fun-packed hour of great cabaret. Don't miss this one - I see a CD in the future, but don't wait for the recording, see it "live" this week!

("In These Shoes .." plays one more date at THE DUPLEX, Wednesday, May 11th at 9:30 pm. There is a $15 cover, 2-drink minimum. $10 cover for members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.)

DAVID GURLAND "NEUROTICA" AT THE ENCORE

Don't let the rather scary flier photo keep you away from David Gurland's current show "Neurotica," running at THE ENCORE (266 West 47th Street, NYC - 212-221-3960 - http://www.theencorenyc.com/ ). This time around David has a winner! With the amazing Michael Holland (king of medleys) as musical director on piano & guitar, a great band (Jerry Smith, percussion; Marco Brehm, bass) and two lively back-up vocalists (Karen Mack & David Boyd) the show covers (or I should say "skewers") the Madonna songbook. The show features about 20 Madonna hits from as far back as the 80s, but if you are a true, diehard Madonna fan, don't expect this show to be a tribute. Instead, the mischievous Mr. Gurland, in kilt and muscle shirt, goes as far as he dares to capture the silly side of Ms. Ciccone-Ritchie. While his vocals are true and captivating, his gestures and facial expressions make the whole event a funny spoof of Madonna in particular, but much of the pop-rock genre as well. Good times!

("Neurotica" continues at THE ENCORE, with shows on Thursday, May 12th at 7:00 pm and Fridays, May 20th & 27th at 9:30 pm. $15 cover, $12 food/drink minimum - $10 cover for members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.)

EMILY ABRAHAM "JERSEY GIRL?" AT THE ENCORE (DEBUT)

What happens when an upstate New York gal (with only one other Jewish girl in her high school) moves downstate and gets an apartment in Manhattan and begins to live the life of a supermodel (on a waiter's salary)? It's party time - at least until reality takes hold in the form of a prince of a boyfriend, and they settle down together in a New Jersey apartment. Emily Abraham tells her tale with glee in her NY cabaret debut at THE ENCORE (266 West 47th Street, NYC - 212-221-3960 - http://www.theencorenyc.com/ ). The SoHo lifestyle in which she found herself involved is a sharp contrast to the shopping mall life she lives today, yet Ms. Abraham has no regrets as she sparkles and sings her way into your heart. With maestro Rick Jensen at the piano and direction by Lina Koutrakos, Ms. Abraham could not ask for a better team in her entry into the world of NY cabaret. Her superb vocals and unbounded enthusiasm will carry her far. My only quibble is that her onstage persona does not seem to match some of the wild tales of "sex in the city" that form the background of the first part of the show. Somehow I can't imagine this perky, pretty and innocent-seeming gal involved in the supermodel lifestyle. Could there really be a "dark side" to this very charming personality?

("Jersey Girl?" continues at THE ENCORE with shows on Wednesday, May 11th at 7:00 pm and the 18th at 9:30 pm. There is a $12 cover, $12 food/drink minimum. $6 cover for members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.)

I also saw the Jamie deRoy & friends show, the Johnny Mercer Birthday Party with Leslie Anderson & Ricky Ritzel as well as Karen Koehler & Greta, all at THE ENCORE, and Reagan Stone at DON'T TELL MAMA in the past few weeks. Comments on all of these shows will be in the next issue, I hope, and if space allows, shows I plan to see in the next few days.

CABARET HOTLINE SPRING ONLINE BENEFIT ENDS TODAY
Our SPRING ON-LINE BENEFIT will come to a close today, and we're still about $500 short of our goal. You can still send in a donation via PayPal today. This special SPRING ON-LINE BENEFIT is being held to cover the expenses associated with moving me and CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to a new office/apartment, (so far it has cost over $3,500 just for the rents/deposits and moving costs) plus some of the non-insurance covered costs of my recent knee operation (there are deductibles, co-pays, non-covered procedures, plus I have had to rely a lot on taxis lately, especially to and from doctor visits, and to get home late in the evening - one feels quite vulnerable walking on crutches in the subways or waiting for a bus late at night).

This is a benefit where you don't need to make a reservation, you don't need to brave the elements, you don't need to hire a baby sitter and you don't need to pay a huge fee to park your car in order to attend. You don't need to pay a 2-drink minimum, and, best of all, folks anywhere in the world can take part. If you would like to "attend" the SPRING ON-LINE BENEFIT, just go to my website and click on the SPRING BENEFIT DRIVE link at the top of the right column. You can donate any amount - $10, $50, $100, whatever you can afford. I will be posting a running total of receipts and all donors are listed (unless they declined) on a special 'ANGELS' page on the website. So far nearly $2000 has been received towards our $2,500 estimated goal. I am counting on you to help us through this difficult and expensive period.

If you prefer not to use a credit card and PayPal, you can send a check made out simply to Stu Hamstra and mail it to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, 676A Ninth Avenue #120, NY, NY 10036.

REAL LIVE BENEFIT FOR CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE TO BE HELD ON JULY 6th
By the way, I am planning a real, actual, benefit and membership drive on July 6th to celebrate the 15th birthday of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - coinciding with my 66th birthday. The show will feature some of the many performers I have grown to enjoy over the past 15 years. Anyone contributing to the SPRING benefit with a donation of $25 or more will get a special $10 discount on the summer benefit ticket. In a few days I will be adding a special page on the website with details on the benefit including a link where you can order your reservations - space for the benefit show is limited to just 70, but a pre-show open-mic party will be also be held - with free admission to 2005-2006 Members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. You will be able to get your membership card at the door, but for faster service see the next item about getting your membership card in advance. We've chosen the space but won't announce it until we have worked out all the details. You will need to make your reservations via e-mail - don't call the club. Stay tuned.

2005-2006 MEMBERSHIPS NOW BEING ACCEPTED
Now is a great time to join as a new member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE! As of today. a;; mew (and renewing) members will be sent 2005-2006 Membership Cards, giving new members an extra 2 months membership free. All 2005-2006 cards will expire on July 6th, 2006. This means that a basic $20 SILVER membership will cost less than $1.50 per month! Each week there are about $150 in discounts available for members. Now that's a bargain!

FLY CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE ON YOUR NEXT TRIP
One renewing member discovered something interesting and told me to pass it along. One of her credit cards gives her frequent flier miles, so she got her 2005-2006 membership using that card and PayPal - and the appropriate miles were credited to her account! We prefer you use PayPal because it saves us so much extra work: you get an instant receipt via e-mail when you send your membership donation or banner payment; I get instant notification that I can print out and file for my records; PayPal keeps a log of all transactions for me, which I can refer to to double check your gift or payment; I don't have to go to the bank and make a deposit, and then wait for the checks to clear; you can choose to make your payment now, but remit as much as 25 days later to your credit card without interest - or pay them in installments. And, don't forget those frequent flier miles! There are several pages on my website with links to my PayPal payment page - the easiest one to find is at the bottom of the CABARET NEWS page - my home page.

IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise? Now I need to get this leg stretched out and perhaps a nap. Please realize, your membership donations, banner ad payments and other gifts will mean a lot to me in the next few weeks. Just click on the SPRING BENEFIT link on the opening page on my website. I am counting on all of you.

Once again a great big thank you to the nearly 400 folks who have joined and/or rejoined CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE as members for the 2004-2005 membership year. Your continued support will make CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE bigger and better in the months to come.

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
