CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #050502 - Thursday, May 5, 2005
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News

CELEBRATING OUR 15th YEAR COVERING CABARET ALL OVER THE WORLD!
NOW - BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER!

If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

This is the MIDWEEK Issue this of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, which includes news, breaking stories and notes, cabaret tips, announcements of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE reviews, plus listings of shows offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. The MONDAY Issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE includes cabaret listings for around the world, and also includes information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website.

ATTENTION AOL USERS: Over 400 newsletters sent out to AOL subscribers have been bouncing back each issue - with no resolution coming from AOL in spite of repeated promises. All copies of past issues are archived on the website.

There has been quite a discussion on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE message board over the past few weeks regarding MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs - http://www.macnyc.com/ ) in particular, but many of the comments could be applied to other local cabaret membership organizations as well. The discussion threads have gotten quite impassioned at times - spilling over into rudeness, so I have had to moderate the board on a continuing basis. I have had to apply a special set of rules, temporarily I hope, while the MAC discussion continues. Since the board is intended to permit reasonable people to carry on reasonable discussion without resort to insult, innuendo and personality attacks, I will delete any future posts that I feel are not in the spirit of the board. Also, a few people are posting items concerning MAC using names and e-mail addresses that are bogus. While we permit such postings in many instances, in the future, in the matter of the ongoing MAC discussion, we insist that you use your own name and a valid e-mail address.

I DON'T GET AROUND AS MUCH ANY MORE
I was looking over my cabaret calendar for the past several weeks, and realized that since my accident on March 10th, my cabaret show attendance has really suffered a cutback. I was able to attend only 8 shows in the rest of March, and a total of only 13 shows in all of April (including the MAC AWARDS). I must be feeling a bit better, since I have mapped out 16 shows I want to see during the first 2 weeks in May (including two shows I saw last night), and I don't even have all the club schedules yet!

ABOUT THE 2005 MAC AWARDS - REPORT COMING SOON
I was hoping to have my report of the 2005 MAC AWARDS show held on April 25th on the website yesterday, but a last-minute rush banner order, which included design, took several hours to fulfill in the afternoon. Hopefully, after I update some web pages today, I will be able to complete the project. Stay tuned.

CABARET HOTLINE SPRING ONLINE BENEFIT ENDS THIS WEEKEND
Our SPRING ON-LINE BENEFIT will come to a close this weekend - this is a benefit where you don't need to make a reservation, you don't need to brave the elements, you don't need to hire a baby sitter and you don't need to pay a huge fee to park your car in order to attend. You don't need to pay a 2-drink minimum, and, best of all, folks anywhere in the world can take part.

This special SPRING ON-LINE BENEFIT is being held to cover the expenses associated with moving me and CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to a new office/apartment, plus some of the non-insurance covered costs of my recent knee operation (there are deductibles, co-pays, non-covered procedures, etc., to worry about). Most of all, I have had to rely a lot on taxis lately, especially to and from doctor visits, and to get home late in the evening - one feels quite vulnerable walking on crutches in the subways or waiting for a bus late at night. Biggest expense was a result my roommate moving out unexpectedly on the 31st of March, meaning I needed to pay "double rent" in April, and I had to find a new living space, which meant moving expenses, advance rent & security deposit and some other unexpected charges. So far it has cost over $3,500 just for the rents/deposits and moving costs.

If you would like to "attend" the SPRING ON-LINE BENEFIT, just go to my website and click on the SPRING BENEFIT DRIVE link at the top of the right column. You can donate any amount - $10, $50, $100, whatever you can afford. I will be posting a running total of receipts and all donors are listed (unless they declined) on a special 'ANGELS' page on the website. So far nearly $2000 has been received towards our $2,500 estimated goal. I am counting on you to help us through this difficult and expensive period.

If you prefer not to use a credit card and PayPal, you can send a check made out simply to Stu Hamstra and mail it to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, 676A Ninth Avenue #120, NY, NY 10036.

REAL LIVE BENEFIT FOR CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE TO BE HELD ON JULY 6th
By the way, I am planning a real, actual, benefit and membership drive on July 6th to celebrate the 15th birthday of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - coinciding with my 66th birthday. The show will feature some of the many performers I have grown to enjoy over the past 15 years. Anyone contributing to the SPRING benefit with a donation of $25 or more will get a special $10 discount on the summer benefit ticket. In a few days I will be adding a special page on the website with details on the benefit including a link where you can order your reservations - space for the benefit show is limited, but a pre-show open-mic party will be also be scheduled. We've chosen the space but won't announce it until we have worked out all the details. You will need to make your reservations via e-mail - don't call the club. Stay tuned.

LOOKING FOR MORE REGIONAL NEWS
Visits to the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website continue to increase - and folks are starting to visit the various area-related web pages. I need news to fill those NEWS BRIEFS items, especially news from the Southeast and Southwest areas, New Jersey and Upstate NY. I know there are cabaret events going on all over the world, and there is no charge to run your news item or listing - just make sure the information is complete. I actually had another item sent me this week where the performer never included their last name! Once again, I need the full address and phone number of the performance venue (I have over 300 venues in my database, but I just might not have the one you send in); I need the first and last names of all taking part, including musical director, director, band members and back up singers if used; I need to know the cover charge and minimum; oh, and don't forget the time, date - and day of the week. And please, send the information about 3 weeks in advance (not 2 days and not 2 months in advance).

CABARET NEWS ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other shows around the country and around the world can be found on the BREAKING NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ ). How do you get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. By the way, I try to get information about shows offering CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discounts up on the website first. I am also especially interested in releases on shows outside the NYC area.

Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. With two newsletters going out a week, I don't have enough time to look these things up, and often have to simply toss out incomplete items. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.

TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise? This has actually been a fun issue to write - with a lot of exciting news to relate to you all.

So much more to write - but simply no time to complete all I wanted to say - including "The Top Ten Reasons Why Walking On Crutches Is Not All That Bad," and the "Top 10 Myths About MAC & Cabaret." I also was working on reports on four shows that I saw this past week - these too are incomplete, so they will have to wait for the next issue.

Once again a great big thank you to the nearly 400 folks who have joined and/or rejoined CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE as members for the 2004-2005 membership year, which runs until July 5th. Over 450 joined last membership year. Your support through memberships and banner advertising keeps this whole operation going and growing. Help make CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE bigger and better in the months to come. Your financial support, through membership donations and banner advertising, is especially important to me right now. I am counting on your help.

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,
