News
CELEBRATING OUR 15th
YEAR COVERING CABARET ALL OVER THE WORLD!
NOW - BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER!
If it's anything to
do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!
This is the MIDWEEK Issue this of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, which includes
news, breaking stories and notes, cabaret tips, announcements of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE reviews, plus listings of shows offering discounts
to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. The MONDAY Issue of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE includes cabaret listings for around the world, and
also includes information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website.
ATTENTION AOL USERS: Over
400 newsletters sent out to AOL subscribers have been bouncing back
each issue - with no resolution coming from AOL in spite of repeated
promises. All copies of past issues are archived on the website.
CABARET HOTLINE HAS RELOCATED
- ALMOST
The DSL line won't be up
and running until Monday, May 9th, and the DirecTV man was chased
away by a wild and noisy thunderstorm yesterday when he came to install
service, and he won't get back here until Tuesday the 3rd of May.
But everything else is here - with just 8 more boxes (out of 22) to
unpack - mostly my collection of CDs and a box of computer books.
My new home/office is in a lovely, fully and elegantly furnished apartment
in Elmhurst, Queens, just a few blocks from a large shopping mall,
and convenient to the subway to Manhattan and bus service to most
local destinations. There is a huge weeping willow tree just outside
my bedroom/office double window, so watch for more sparrow stories
in future issues and maybe a new "nature movie" on my website. A big
thanks to all who helped with the move, especially those who sent
in donations to our special SPRING ONLINE BENEFIT. Some expenses remain
- you always discover something new you need when you move to a new
space, so the benefit continues for a short while longer (we are about
$750 short of our estimated goal). See below for more information.
Please note that the
mailing address of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will not change - it will
remain 676A Ninth Avenue #120, New York, NY 10036 - this is a MAILBOXES,
ETC. store where I have received my mail for many years (ever since
my mail began disappearing at my former mid-town address).
MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR RICHARD
KENNEDY ANNOUNCED
A memorial service for
MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs - http://www.macnyc.com/
) Board of Directors member Richard Kennedy, who passed away suddenly
the weekend of April 16th, will be held at ST. BARTHOLOMEW'S CHURCH
(109 East 50th Street, NYC) on Friday, May 6th at 10:30 am. Richard
Kennedy was also on the staff of the NYC PBS TV Channel Thirteen/WNET
and an integral part of their pledge productions for many years. His
work around performance programming was legendary, including the creation
of CABARET THIRTEEN, which was his personal labor of love. Mr. Kennedy's
friends and family invite you to join them.
ABOUT THE 2005 MAC AWARDS
- BRIEFLY
The 2005 MAC AWARDS show,
presented on Monday the 25th at THE PETER NORTON SYMPHONY SPACE (Broadway
at 95th Street - 212-864-1414) by MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets
& Clubs - http://www.macnyc.com/
) was awesome, inspiring and impressive. After a period of reconstruction
and reorganization, MAC seems to be getting its act together, and
this year's show held a promise of exciting things to come for the
MAC community and cabaret in NYC. MAC President Barry Levitt, who
was executive producer of the event, and his co-producers Judy Barnett,
Jan Grossberg and Shelly Roberts are to be cheered and congratulated
for a show that represented some of the best in cabaret, jazz and
comedy. "Thrilling and exciting" best describes the evening - non-stop
entertainment, with just a few too-long speeches by presenters, not
by award winners. Great MC work by Sidney Myer, Ron Poole and Richard
Skipper kept the show rolling along smoothly - with just one or two
minor glitches along the way. A listing of winners is posted on my
website.
And if anyone thought
the show was long, here's a quote from my friend Daniel, attending
his first awards show ever: "I can't believe that I just saw a show
that was over 3 1/2 hours long and never wanted to leave my seat!"
Daniel has been attending cabaret shows with me for about 18 months,
and was extra thrilled to see so many of the performer-friends he
has made get their awards and/or perform in this gala event. The
hall seemed to be nearly 80% filled - a great increase from last
year's show, with the balcony and center sections filled from front
to back and the side sections about 1/2 filled. What a tremendous
show of support to MAC and the new MAC board from the NYC area cabaret
community! Hopefully, at last, we are all together again and can
move forward with the ambitious plans that the MAC board is developing.
Don't forget, MAC is
a volunteer organization, and as such needs members and volunteers
to carry out their plans and programs. Now is the time for folks
to join, and not the time to stand on the sidelines and whine about
the past. And now is the time for folks to volunteer to make MAC
everything that it can and should be! Mr. Levitt, let me know what
I can do to help!
We were having so much
fun, Daniel and I (thanks to a gift of two tickets from a special
friend) went to the MAC after-show party at AIX (2398 Broadway (at
88th Street, NYC - 212-874-7400). I actually walked the 7 or so
blocks there (on my crutches, of course). The place was jam packed
- there were no tables left when we got there (others wisely took
cabs, I guess). So much fun! And on the way out we ran into Ricky
Ritzel and Leslie Anderson who said they were heading to THE ENCORE
(266 West 47th Street, NYC - 212-221-3960 - http://www.theencorenyc.com/
) for the after-show party there. We followed in the next cab. More
fun! Finally, at 2:20 am (my latest night out in many weeks) we
got a cab and headed to home.
I am writing a more
complete MAC AWARDS SHOW report - hopefully to be on the website
in the next few days.
Great news - I hope.
I was seated in a theater-style chair for the entire evening without
any pain in my left knee (I call it my Town Hall Knee). Can it be
that my recent surgery (also my left knee) incidentally cured the
malady that has prevented me from staying seated in a theater-style
seat for more than an hour without pain? Will I be able to finally
attend award shows, Broadway By The Year shows and other events
again without leaving at intermission? Mr. & Mrs. Siegel: Start
setting aside tickets for me again! Mr. Smith, put me back on your
mailing list!
CABARET HOTLINE SPRING
ONLINE BENEFIT UPDATE
We're holding a SPRING
ON-LINE BENEFIT - you don't need to make a reservation, you don't
need to brave the elements, you don't need to hire a baby sitter and
you don't need to pay a huge fee to park your car in order to attend.
You don't need to pay a 2-drink minimum, and, best of all, folks anywhere
in the world can take part.
This special SPRING
ON-LINE BENEFIT is being held to cover the expenses associated with
moving to the new apartment, plus some of the non-insurance covered
costs of my recent knee operation (there are deductibles, co-pays,
non-covered procedures, etc., to worry about). Most of all, I have
had to rely a lot on taxis lately, especially to and from doctor
visits, and to get home late in the evening - one feels quite vulnerable
walking on crutches in the subways or waiting for a bus late at
night. Biggest expense was a result my roommate moving out unexpectedly
on the 31st of March, meaning I needed to pay "double rent" in April,
and I had to find a new living space, which meant moving expenses,
advance rent & security deposit and some other unexpected charges.
It was like paying 4 month's rent in just 30 days - over $2,800!
If you would like to
"attend" the SPRING ON-LINE BENEFIT, just go to my website and click
on the SPRING BENEFIT DRIVE link at the top of the right column.
You can donate any amount - $10, $50, $100, whatever you can afford.
I will be posting a running total of receipts and all donors will
be listed (unless they decline) on a special 'ANGELS' page on the
website. So far over $1,700 has been received towards our $2,500
estimated goal. I am counting on you to help us through this difficult
and expensive period.
If you prefer not to
use a credit card and PayPal, you can send a check made out simply
to Stu Hamstra and mail it to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, 676A Ninth
Avenue #120, NY, NY 10036.
REAL LIVE BENEFIT FOR CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE TO BE HELD ON JULY 6th
By the way, I am planning
a real, actual, benefit and membership drive on July 6th to celebrate
the 15th birthday of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - coinciding with my 66th
birthday. Anyone contributing to the SPRING benefit with a donation
of $25 or more will get a special $10 discount on the summer benefit
ticket. In a few days I will be adding a special page on the website
with details on the benefit including a link where you can order your
reservations - space for the benefit show is limited, but a pre-show
open-mic party will be also be scheduled. More news soon.
ON WITH THE NEWS
I have a lot of cabaret
news for you. I promise you will read things in this issue you will
not find published anywhere else!

LOOKING FOR MORE REGIONAL
NEWS
Visits to the CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE website continue to increase - and folks are starting to visit
the various area-related web pages. I need news to fill those NEWS
BRIEFS items, especially news from the Southeast and Southwest areas,
New Jersey and Upstate NY. I know there are cabaret events going on
all over the world, and there is no charge to run your news item or
listing - just make sure the information is complete. I actually had
another item sent me this week where the performer never included
their last name! Once again, I need the full address and phone number
of the performance venue (I have over 300 venues in my database, but
I just might not have the one you send in); I need the first and last
names of all taking part, including musical director, director, band
members and back up singers if used; I need to know the cover charge
and minimum; oh, and don't forget the time, date - and day of the
week. And please, send the information about 3 weeks in advance (not
2 days and not 2 months in advance).

MEMBERSHIP CARDS are sent

discounts where offered. Any show that offers a discount to CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE members will be listed on the special MEMBER DEALS
page in the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website for the run of the show,
and included in the SHOW DISCOUNT listings in the MID-WEEK issue of
the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE NEWSLETTER. The discount offered must be
equal to or greater than any other discount offer you make available
to other persons, groups or organizations.
To be eligible for a
listing on the MEMBER DEALS page you must send in your flier, press
release and/or other promotional materials by regular mail (not
via e-mail) clearly showing the discount offer. That information
will be used as the basis for the website page notice, as well as
for the newsletter listing. Please confirm that you have sent me
the material with an e-mail reminder so I can watch for it. Please
be sure to check with the venue where you are performing to be sure
that these discounts will be honored.
Any member who is denied
a properly listed CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discount should notify
me at once. I cannot guarantee that the discount will be honored,
but I can take steps to contact the parties involved and publish
the facts in the newsletter and remove the listing from the MEMBER

CABARET NEWS ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other
shows around the country and around the world can be found on the
BREAKING NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/
). How do you get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of
at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your
show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in
jpg or gif format if available. By the way, I try to get information
about shows offering CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discounts up on the website
first. I am also especially interested in releases on shows outside
the NYC area.
Please send me complete
information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or
a reference to a website. With two newsletters going out a week,
I don't have enough time to look these things up, and often have
to simply toss out incomplete items. By the way, I usually trim
quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using
the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them
when putting together the four or more paragraphs.
TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter
I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find
published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise? This has actually
been a fun issue to write - with a lot of exciting news to relate
to you all.
It has been a busy but
fantastically satisfying week for me - new home, new neighborhood,
and that amazing MAC AWARDS show on Monday night. The thrill of
seeing MAC and NYC cabaret joining together in making for a great
show is indescribable. Let's all hope that this is the start of
something big!
After a few nights of
resting up after a very exciting (and late Monday) I am back in
town tonight to catch the "Jamie deRoy & friends" show at 7:30 pm
at THE ENCORE (266 West 47th Street, NYC - 212-221-3960 - http://www.theencorenyc.com/
). I might even visit a few piano bars in the area and go back to
THE ENCORE for the 2005 MAC AWARD winning "Johnny Mercer Birthday
Show" ay 11:00 pm. I do have a doctor's exam on Friday afternoon,
and so I have to keep from overdoing it tonight, but I feel great
(and have lost nearly 20 pounds!).
Once again a great big
thank you to the nearly 400 folks who have joined and/or rejoined
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE as members for the 2004-2005 membership year,
which runs until July 5th. Over 450 joined last membership year.
Your support through memberships and banner advertising keeps this
whole operation going and growing. Help make CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
bigger and better in the months to come. Your financial support,
through membership donations and banner advertising, is especially
important to me right now. I am counting on your help.
And that is just about
the way it was.
