Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret
News
CELEBRATING OUR 15th YEAR COVERING CABARET ALL OVER
THE WORLD!
NOW - BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER!
If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably
read it here first!
This is the MIDWEEK Issue this of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, which includes
news, breaking stories and notes, cabaret tips, announcements of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE reviews, plus listings of shows offering discounts
to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. The MONDAY Issue of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE includes cabaret listings for around the world, and
also includes information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website.
ATTENTION AOL USERS: Over 400 newsletters sent out to AOL subscribers
have been bouncing back each issue - with no resolution coming from
AOL in spite of promises. All copies of past issues are archived on
the website.
Well, the boxes arrived from STAPLES and this afternoon some friends
are dropping by to help me begin to pack my stuff in order to make
my move to a new apartment on the weekend of the 23rd. I have permission
to move some of my things this weekend, so the stuff I don't need
for the next week or so will be moved first - CDs, books, files, etc.
Moving is also a good time to get rid of things - I have a rule that
if I don't ever open a carton from my last move (I've been here for
nearly three years), the contents get dumped. I am also going through
my closets and getting rid of shirts and slacks I no longer fit in
or are too worn out to continue to wear.
While I did buy a toaster ($9 at Duane Reade), I
never got around to replacing the pots and pans and dishes that
moved out with my roommate at the end of March (he was a former
chef and loved to cook, so he owned 95% of the kitchen stuff). I
was ready to buy a set of cookware, but the new apartment has just
about every pot and kettle I would ever need. Money saved is even
more fun than money earned!
Hopefully there will be no disruption of the newsletter
schedule over the next two weeks - I plan to send out the MIDWEEK
issue as usual next week on the 21st from the old apartment, and
should be ready to go with the MONDAY issue on the 25th from the
new space. Please remember, even though we are moving to Elmhurst,
Queens, our mailing address WILL NOT CHANGE - it will continue to
be 676A Ninth Avenue, #120, New York, NY 10036.
The knee continues to heal - but I am still confined
to this massive brace and have to get around with the crutches.
This is not painful, but it is not fun either. Last night, it took
me nearly 45 minutes to hobble from the subway exit in Times Square
- 47th Street & Seventh Avenue - to go to my mailbox store on Ninth
Avenue at 47th Street, and then to DON'T TELL MAMA at 46th Street
between Eighth & Ninth Avenues. This is partly due to the fact that
I need to start from a curb as soon as the light turns green in
order to cross an avenue before the light goes red - if the light
is already green when I get to a corner, I need to wait for the
next green light. UGH!
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE CHAT BOARD PROBLEMS CONTINUE
The CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE MESSAGE BOARD is still being "moderated,"
which means I have to check the board every few hours to clear postings
- they can only be seen on my computer until I approve them. This
came about because some entity (less than human, I assume) decided
to attack the board with a stream of obscene postings - over 200 have
been removed so far. I say less than human because they are posted
so quickly, sometimes 5 or 6 in a minute. The attack seems to have
abated somewhat, but until they cease completely for several days,
I shall continue to keep the board "locked." Sorry for the inconvenience.
CONGRATULATIONS TO REAGAN STONE
Carolyn Montgomery, have you started a trend? Last night at DON'T
TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/
), singer Reagan Stone announced at her 6:00 pm show that a baby was
on the way to her household. A very pregnant Julie Reyburn is currently
performing at THE ENCORE (266 West 47th Street, NYC - 212-221-3960
- http://www.theencorenyc.com/
), and of course Carolyn Montgomery and her new baby are the hits
of cabaret. Soon cabaret venues in town will have to include onsite
play rooms for performers' kids while they are doing their shows!
CONGRATULATIONS TO HELEN'S CELEBRATING THEIR FIRST ANNIVERSARY APRIL
18th
HELEN'S RESTAURANT, CABARET & PIANO LOUNGE (169 Eighth Avenue, NYC
- 212-206-0609 - http://www.helensnyc.com/
) will celebrate their first anniversary on Monday night, April 18th.
You are invited to drop by to enjoy a complimentary champagne cocktail
hour with hors d'oeuvres, followed by a complimentary buffet, entertainment,
and all-night drink specials. See the HELEN'S website for more details.
ON A PERSONAL NOTE TO NYC AREA PERFORMERS AND FRIENDS OF CABARET
In less than two weeks MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs
- http://www.macnyc.com/
) will be holding its 2005 MAC Awards show - Monday, April 25th to
be exact. This is THE year, THE time and THE place for all NYC area
performers and friends of cabaret to show their stuff by purchasing
a ticket and attending the show. The MAC board has gone through nearly
a complete transformation in a very short period, and this is THE
time for area performers to join together and give MAC their full
support. No longer calling itself a "trade organization" to promote
cabaret venues, MAC has been changing to an organization to promote
the art of cabaret and promote the efforts of performers and clubs
alike.
MAC is still not a perfect organization, but I know
of no organization that is perfect - political, religious, professional
or social. That's the way life is. Unfortunately there are still
a few diehards out there who are clinging to past mistakes made
by MAC, some of them made years in the past. It is time to quit
acting like little children and move on. Take a look at the list
of current members of the board and you will note that these are
folks not pushing their own personal agendas, but instead folks
who have agreed to serve because MAC was in trouble and when MAC
is in trouble, cabaret is in trouble.
MAC always puts on a darned good awards show - and
all NYC area performers and cabaret fans who love cabaret and want
to see it continue to grow and flourish (look at all the new rooms
we have here in town - no other city I know of offers all these
opportunities to cabaret) should be attending this year. Cabaret
will not grow and flourish if we continue to whine and bicker over
the mistakes and missteps made in the past.
Attending this year's show at THE PETER NORTON SYMPHONY
SPACE (Broadway at 95th Street - 212-864-1414) will not be easy
for me this year, since it is the Monday after I move to my new
apartment. But I will be there, crutches and all, to show my support
for cabaret, for cabaret performers, and for the volunteers who
serve on the MAC Board. I hope to see ALL NYC area performers there
as well.
ON WITH THE NEWS
I have a lot of cabaret news for you. I promise you will read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else!

NEWS ABOUT THE CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE WEBSITE
CABARET HOTLINE SPRING BENEFIT/MEMBERSHIP DRIVE UPDATE
Unless you are a new subscriber, I am sure that you are aware by now
of the anticipated expenses coming up for me in the next few days
and weeks. Medicare will not cover all the expenses of my recent knee
operation (there are deductibles, co-pays, non-covered procedures,
travel expenses, etc., to worry about). Plus, with my roommate moving
out unexpectedly on the 31st of March, I had to pay double rent for
April, and I have had to find a new living space as of May 1st, which
will mean moving expenses, advance rent & security deposit and other
possible unexpected expenses.
So I am holding a SPRING BENEFIT / MEMBERSHIP DRIVE.
There is a link on the BENEFIT / MEMBERSHIP DRIVE page on my website.
This is a benefit that you don't need to make a reservation for,
don't need to brave the elements, or hire a baby sitter or pay a
huge fee to park your car in order to attend. There is no 2-drink
minimum, and folks anywhere in the world can take part. Just go
to my website and click on the SPRING BENEFIT DRIVE link at the
top of the right column. You can donate any amount - $10, $50, $100,
whatever you can afford. I will be posting a running total of receipts
and all donors will be listed (unless they decline) on a special
'ANGELS' page on the website. So far over $1,000 has been received
towards our $2,500 estimated goal (new apartment requires rent plus
security deposit).
If you wish instead to pre-renew your membership
for the 2005-2006 membership year (which starts on July 6, 2005)
there is also a link on the BENEFIT / MEMBERSHIP DRIVE page to do
just that. New 2005-2006 memberships will not start until May 5th.
You financial support will be most appreciated. Please keep in mind
that, except for a monthly social security check, my only income
is from banner ads, memberships and donations.
If you prefer not to use a credit card and PayPal,
you can send a check made out simply to Stu Hamstra and mail it
to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, 676A Ninth Avenue #120, NY, NY 10036.
By the way, I am planning a real, actual, benefit
and membership drive on July 6th (or thereabouts) this summer to
celebrate the 15th birthday of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - coinciding
with my 66th birthday. Anyone contributing to this SPRING benefit
with a donation of $25 or more will get a special discount on the
summer benefit ticket - price & place & cast to be determined.
LOOKING FOR MORE REGIONAL NEWS
Visits to the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website continue to increase
- and folks are starting to visit the various area-related web pages.
I need news to fill those NEWS BRIEFS items, especially news from
the Southeast and Southwest areas, New Jersey and Upstate NY. I know
there are cabaret events going on all over the world, and there is
no charge to run your news item or listing - just make sure the information
is complete. I actually had another item sent me this week where the
performer never included their last name! Once again, I need the full
address and phone number of the performance venue (I have over 300
venues in my database, but I just might not have the one you send
in); I need the first and last names of all taking part, including
musical director, director, band members and back up singers if used;
I need to know the cover charge and minimum; oh, and don't forget
the time, date - and day of the week. And please, send the information
about 3 weeks in advance (not 2 days and not 2 months in advance).
MEGA-SIZED BANNERS AVAILABLE ON THE WEBSITE
For those who have a lot to tell and can't seem to squeeze all their
information into a regular or SuperSize banner, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
is now offering MEGABANNERS - bigger and better, for those who want
to have their advertisement really make an impression. Click on the
BANNER INFO button at the top of every page on the website for information
about all banner sizes, costs and terms of display.

noir dark melody "Blues for Breakfast", with lyrics by Jerry Gladstone,

"Learn to Love", which was written in 1980, and finally recorded by

CABARET NEWS ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other shows around the country and around the world
can be found on the BREAKING NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/
). How do you get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of
at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your
show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in
jpg or gif format if available. By the way, I try to get information
about shows offering CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discounts up on the website
first. I am also especially interested in releases on shows outside
the NYC area.
Please send me complete information - and do not
merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website.
With two newsletters going out a week, I don't have enough time
to look these things up, and often have to simply toss out incomplete
items. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press
releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the
newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or
more paragraphs.
TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise? Please remember that the website, the newsletter, the
reviews and my own personal visits to cabaret shows and events are
entirely dependent on your support, through membership and other donations,
and banner advertising.
Once again a great big thank you to the nearly 400
folks who have joined and/or rejoined CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE as
members for the 2004-2005 membership year, which runs until July
5th. Over 450 joined last membership year. Your support through
memberships and banner advertising keeps this whole operation going
and growing. Help make CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE bigger and better
in the months to come.
Now for a nap (I started at 6:30 am today - too much
going on) and then around 1:00 pm my pals arrive to spend a few
hours packing some of my stuff for the move. No cabaret for me tonight,
but tomorrow night I hope to make it to THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE
(61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/
) for Clark Warren's new show at 7:00 pm.
Once again I solicit your thoughts and prayers as
I continue to face a series of important decisions and activities
over the next few days. Your financial support, through membership
donations and banner advertising, is especially important to me
right now. I am counting on your help.
And that is just about the way it was.
