News
CELEBRATING
OUR 15th YEAR COVERING CABARET ALL OVER THE WORLD!
NOW - BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER!
If it's
anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!
This is a MONDAY NEWS Issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE and also includes
information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website plus listings for around the world, including shows at over
100 venues and covering over 300 performances (with a number offering
discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE). The MID-WEEK issue,
normally sent on Thursdays, will include more news, breaking stories
and notes, cabaret tips, review summaries, plus listings of shows
offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.
ATTENTION AOL USERS: Over
400 newsletters sent out to AOL subscribers have been bouncing back
each issue - with no resolution coming from AOL in spite of promises.
Apparently this is because of some new "spam-blocking" software that
AOL is using. All copies of past issues are archived on the website,
and I have added links to the online copies of the past several issues
on the opening BREAKING NEWS PAGE. I have been attempting to resolve
this problem for over a week and hopefully today's issue will go through
to all subscribers - sorry for the inconvenience.
So much news came in this
morning, I had to trim and clip on the listings to stay under the
word limit - more complete listings next Monday.
THAT WAS THE WEEK THAT
WAS
First off, lest anyone
reading the report of my knee surgery in last week's MIDWEEK ISSUE
get the wrong impression, I want to let you know that the hospital
staff, the doctors and aides were most kind, helpful, friendly and
professional throughout my day and a half stay at NY PRESBYTERIAN.
Everything they warned me of came true - including the period of depression
I would feel for a few days after the operation. I had no idea it
would last for such a long period, but then again the events of the
week (the Terri Schiavo saga, then the Pope's passing) plus the personal
loss I felt when I was told of the passing of Jeff Matson, combined
to deepen my inability to "snap out of it," as my friend Daniel said
again and again.
A big thanks
to BACA (Boston Association of Cabaret Artists - http://www.bostoncabaret.com/
) for helping me turn the corner, so to speak, by sending me a huge
bouquet of happy, colorful flowers. This, plus an outpouring of
support over the weekend towards my financial/housing crisis (which
was also bothering me all last week), enabled me to "snap out of
it" and get back to business. There are e-mails to answer, articles
to write, and in a few days, shows to go to. My visit to the doctor
on Wednesday afternoon will give me some idea of any activity limits
in the weeks to come.
Several
folks were concerned because they did not receive the annual APRIL
FOOL'S issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE this year, and now you know
why.
SAD NEWS - JEFF MATSON
The NYC cabaret community
suffered another loss on Saturday afternoon, April 2, 2005 when songwriter/writer/director/producer/graphic
designer Jeff Matson passed away suddenly. Jeff was hospitalized on
Monday, March 28th, suffering from a rare blood disorder, possibly
a result of the fact that Jeff was a diabetic. Though Jeff usually
worked behind the scenes, his talents and skills were appreciated
and enjoyed by performers and audiences alike. He will be sorely missed
by those who knew and loved him, and we especially convey our sympathy
and kind thoughts and prayers to his family and his collaborator,
Bruce Cowan. (full details on my website)
CABARET HOTLINE IS HAVING
A SPRING BENEFIT/MEMBERSHIP DRIVE
I am sure that you are
aware by now of the many unexpected expenses coming up for me in the
next few days - Medicare will not cover all my expenses of my recent
knee operation, and at the same time, my rent has doubled at my current
apartment, with my roommate moving out unexpectedly last week, and
I have been unable to find an inexpensive share or studio to move
to and have been unable to find a new roommate to share the rent and
expenses here.
So I am
holding a SPRING BENEFIT / MEMBERSHIP DRIVE. There is a link on
the BENEFIT / MEMBERSHIP DRIVE page on my website. This is a benefit
that you don't need to make a reservation for, don't need to brave
the elements, or hire a baby sitter or pay a huge fee to park your
car in order to attend. There is no 2-drink minimum, and folks anywhere
in the world can take part. Just go to my website and click on the
SPRING BENEFIT DRIVE link at the top of the right column. You can
donate any amount - $10, $50, $100, whatever you can afford. I will
be posting a running total of receipts and all donors will be listed
(unless they decline) on a special 'ANGELS' page on the website.
I estimate I will be short about $2,500 when all is said and done
at the end of April.
If you
wish instead to pre-renew your membership for the 2005-2006 membership
year (which starts on July 6, 2005) there is also a link on the
BENEFIT / MEMBERSHIP DRIVE page to do just that. New 2005-2006 memberships
will not start until May 5th. You financial support will be most
appreciated. Please keep in mind that, except for a monthly social
security check, my only income is from banner ads, memberships and
donations.
If you
prefer not to use a credit card and PayPal, you can send a check
made out simply to Stu Hamstra and mail it to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE,
676A Ninth Avenue #120, NY, NY 10036.
By the
way, I am planning a real, actual, benefit and membership drive
on July 6th (or thereabouts) this summer to celebrate the 15th birthday
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - coinciding with my 66th birthday. Anyone
contributing to this SPRING benefit with a donation of $25 or more
will get a special discount on the summer benefit ticket - price
& place & cast to be determined.
THE HOUSING DILEMA CONTINUES
As I have mentioned in
the past several issues, there is no way I can afford this apartment
on my own. If you know of a small studio or a share with my own bedroom
- large enough for me and my computer - for less than $800 per month,
convenient to transportation (I don't have a car), let me know. I
don't smoke, have no pets and usually am very quietly working on my
computer. I work at home most days, out most evenings.
Or, if
you or anyone your know is looking for a nice, quiet apartment,
own bedroom, share bathroom, dining room, kitchen and large living
room for less than $800 per month, let me know (share gas & electric
& DirecTV costs - bring your own TV). The bedroom is available for
immediate occupancy. A bus to the east side of Manhattan (58th &
Second Avenue in 1/2 hour and operates 24 hours) is just about 100
steps from my front door - or take the bus to the "R" train that
will get you to Times Square in less than 40 minutes, Herald Square
in 45 minutes and Union Square in less than 50 minutes, and by switching
to the "E" two stops down, in Chelsea or The Village in less than
50 minutes as well. There is a small park across the street, plenty
of on-street parking available (no meters, no time limits) and two
small shopping centers with supermarkets, banks, pizza shops and
Chinese take-out within blocks. Very convenient to LaGuardia Airport
(just over the hill) but far enough away from the flight path that
you barely know its there. Smoker is OK - just not in my bedroom/office
area.

IT'S NEVER TOO LATE TO
JOIN AND SUPPORT CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
It isn't too late to join
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. If you appreciate what efforts we are making
to promote the art of cabaret, both in these twice-weekly newsletters
and on the website, and you haven't yet joined as a member for 2004-2005,
please consider making that donation today. SILVER basic memberships
are $20, and GOLD supporting memberships are $75. Memberships are
available for greater amounts as well. For information on becoming
a contributing member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, check at http://svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml
or else just send me a note at membership@svhamstra.com
with the single word "membership" in the subject line, and I'll send
all the details. You can even make your donation by credit card, using

IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter
I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find
published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise? Now I need to get
this leg stretched out and perhaps a nap. Please realize, your membership
donations, banner ad payments and other gifts will mean a lot to me
in the next few weeks. Just click on the SPRING BENEFIT link on the
opening page on my website. I am counting on all of you.
I have
to get out of this house and do my laundry and get some groceries
- I ran out of coffee this morning, so that makes a shopping trip
a top priority. Also, midweek I ran out of ink on my printer, in
the midst of printing out membership cards and envelope labels.
This means a visit to STAPLE'S is urgent as well. The rains we have
been "blessed with" for the past several days seem to have passed,
so once this newsletter goes out - and after a short nap, off I
will go.
Once again
a great big thank you to the nearly 400 folks who have joined and/or
rejoined CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE as members for the 2004-2005 membership
year. Your continued support will make CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE bigger
and better in the months to come.
And that
is just about the way it was.
