Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret
News
CELEBRATING
OUR 15th YEAR COVERING CABARET ALL OVER THE WORLD!
NOW - BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER!
If it's
anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!
This is a MONDAY NEWS Issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE and also includes
information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website. The MONDAY LISTINGS issue, which includes cabaret listings
for around the world, including listings of shows at over 100 venues
and covering over 300 performances (with a number offering discounts
to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE) is being sent in a second mailing.
The MID-WEEK issue, normally sent on Thursdays, will include more
news, breaking stories and notes, cabaret tips, review summaries,
plus listings of shows offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE.
Here we go again, with
a third test of a new format for the MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE - and once again we solicit your comments and suggestions.
I have split the MONDAY issue into two mailings - this first one,
the NEWS issue, consisting of news items plus announcements regarding
all the banners currently running on the website.
Tomorrow,
Tuesday, I will send out the second part - the LISTINGS issue -
giving listings for shows around the world. As more and more clubs
and performers send me their listings, the regular MONDAY issue
has gotten so large, some e-mail systems have rejected the issues
or converted the information to an attachment (and creating the
same problem we had with the PDF system).
ATTENTION AOL USERS: Over
150 newsletters sent out to AOL subscribers have been bouncing back
each issue - with no resolution coming from AOL in spite of promises.
Apparently this is because of some new "spam-blocking" software that
AOL is using. All copies of past issues are archived on the website,
and I have added links to the online copies of the past several issues
on the opening BREAKING NEWS PAGE. I have been attempting to resolve
this problem for over a week and hopefully today's issue will go through
to all subscribers - sorry for the inconvenience.
MURPHY'S LAW REALIZED
When I mentioned in a past
issue that I had so many things on my mind that I was missing my usually
stop on the subway, I had no idea that missing a stop was a lot less
harmful than missing a step - which is exactly what I did at 6:00
pm at the 49th Street Subway stop on the "R" line last week Thursday
night on the way to Seth Rudetsky's Broadway Chatterbox show. It was
the top step - and it was a step that went down, as compared to all
the other steps that went up! The stairway was crowded ahead of me
and behind, and when I reached the top I assumed my next step would
be on the sidewalk, which my foot discovered was 4 inches below where
it was expected to be. In an instant I found myself sprawled on the
sidewalk, my left leg twisted at a strange angle, and the knowledge
that something was drastically wrong.
15 minutes,
and an ambulance ride later, I discovered something else: the loneliest
place in the world is an emergency room in a hospital in New York
City. People were everywhere, patients and caregivers - but somehow
they all seemed to have more important things on their minds than
me. Someone took my blood pressure and temperature, and I was left
in a gurney in the corridor. My friend Daniel was with me when the
accident happened, and rode along in the ambulance, but could not
stay with me for more than about 15 minutes - they told him it would
be "several hours" so he went off for dinner and said he would call
me on my cell phone in about an hour. It was after he left that
they told me I had to turn off my cell phone, since it might interfere
with their specialized electronic equipment.
I won't
bore you with all the details of the rest of the evening, except
to say that my 6 1/2 hour stay in the ER was about 5 hours of waiting
between procedures, and 1 1/2 hours of actual "treatment." I did
have a brief change of scenery when they wheeled me to another part
of the hospital to wait for my x-rays to be taken and wait to be
wheeled back, and I was moved at one point, from one corridor to
another, causing my assigned doctor to lose track of me for about
a half hour. I say this all fully realizing that I was not bleeding
(like so many others who arrived while I was there), I remained
very patient and uncomplaining (unlike so many others who arrived
while I was there), and as it turned out, I hadn't broken anything
- just tore a ligament or two or four, in my knee. Around midnight
they put a brace on my leg to keep it straight, handed me a set
of crutches plus a list of "things to do," and set me free.
Daniel,
meantime, had contacted me via the hospital phone around 8:30 -
at which time very little progress had been made. I was told at
least another two hours would be needed. He returned to the hospital
but was not allowed into the emergency room, so went home to Queens.
I phoned him on my release, and took a cab back home, where he arranged
to meet me to assist me up the two flights of stairs. I had not
eaten since lunch, so he made up a light supper for me and rearranged
my room a bit to make movement on crutches a little less cumbersome.
In the morning he was there to make breakfast and stayed with me
until Sunday night as I slowly adapted to my new lifestyle. In fact,
on Saturday he assisted me on the stairway and getting into/out
of a cab, since I needed to get some cash, needed some pills from
the drug store, and needed some essential groceries. I stayed at
the front of the stores and guided him to my needs via cell phone.
So, as
a result, I had to cancel all my cabaret plans for the weekend,
with Jeff Matson kindly stepping in to attend the opening night
of cabaret at THE ENCORE (266 West 47th Street, NYC - 212-221-3960
- http://www.theencorenyc.com/
) - his reviews of the shows by Julie Reyburn and Lumiri Tubo are
already posted on the website. In fact, he did such a great job,
I may be calling on him a few more times in the next several days.
I was also
told that the trip to Boston I planned for the 18th through 20th
would most likely not be possible, since I must have another examination
tomorrow, with a possibility of a MRI examination to see exactly
what is torn, and a possible knee operation before the end of the
week. All is temporarily in a state of flux. I am taking one day
at a time on making any decisions.
It is unlikely
that I will be able to move to a new apartment before the end of
the month - or even find a new apartment in that time. As mentioned
in previous issues, my current roommate is moving out at the end
of this month and this leaves me paying the whole rent for April
- which I really cannot afford. I had a spot chosen and nearly signed
for, only to discover that the current tenant decided to stay an
additional month - it would have been perfect and I thought it was
an answer to prayer, but apparently the powers that be had other
plans in mind. If I cannot find a new roommate here, I will be hard
pressed to pay the full rent, especially with the added transportation
expenses I will now face while my leg is treated ($25 each way by
cab to the doctor's office tomorrow, for example). So, I ask for
your thoughts and prayers - and your continued financial support
as I go through this hopefully brief period.
At the
same time, it is a bit uncomfortable sitting at my computer for
more than an hour at a time, and thus this issue is perhaps shorter
than usual - I have lots of news to tell so check the Thursday issue
for more news. I also have not been able to work much on the website
since Thursday - a lot of stories have gone stale, and a number
of stories need to be posted. I am transferring all of my files
to my laptop computer, which I can than work with while on my bed
with leg outstretched, and hopefully this will permit me to use
my "at home" time more efficiently.
Also, I
will be sending out the LISTINGS, normally sent on Monday, tomorrow
instead. I hope you will understand.

MORE NEWS & LISTINGS PLEASE
I am back to working alone
on the newsletter and the website, and so I don't have as much time
as before to check out the websites of venues around the country for
news and listing items. If you are reading this newsletter, and you
are a performer or booking manager with shows scheduled for March,
April and beyond, you can save me a lot of time and effort by sending
in your listings to stuhamstra@cabarethotlineonline.com - I will do
my best to give you coverage in the MONDAY and MID-WEEK issues. Please
remember, the more complete the listing, the more likely I will use
it.
PROMOTE YOUR SHOW, CD OR
OTHER EVENT WITH A BANNER ON THE WEBSITE
I don't want you to miss
out if you are planning on running a banner for your show in March
and April. I limit the number of ads to 20 per week. A banner ad for
three weeks can cost as little as $108 total - if you take advantage
of the PayPal and Member Deals discounts - and even less if you are
a GOLD member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. SILVER members receive a
one-time rebate of $20 on their first banner ad of the membership
year.
Performers
running banners get a special listing for their show or other cabaret-related
item in every MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, reaching nearly
2,500 subscribers. Go to http://svhamstra.com/BannerHere.shtml
or else just send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com
with the single word "banners" in the subject line, and I'll send
all the details.
LOCAL SIDE-BAR BANNERS
NOW AVAILABLE ON SELECT PAGES
To even better serve performers
and venues outside the NYC area, now you can advertise your "out of
NYC" cabaret event on local pages on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website
for a mere $25 ($20 for CABARET HOTLINE MEMBERS) for 4 continuous
weeks of display - or just pennies more than $6 per week. Payment
MUST be made by PayPal in advance. (Localized ads are not available
on the NYC area pages at this time). The ads will appear in four places:
on the local NEWS BRIEFS, on the local VENUE pages, on the local LISTINGS
pages and the local REVIEW index pages for Pennsylvania, New England,
Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco (as they appear). Check out
any of the area NEWS BRIEFS pages to see a sample of the ad size and
location. Ads will be limited to 5 ads per geographical area in any
one week. Funds received for these local pages will be used to support
coverage for that local area, including compensation for reviews and
news items. This "side-bar" ad program is on a trial basis, and may
be expanded discontinued, re-priced or redesigned as we test the reaction
to the new program. I certainly will be interested in any comments
of suggestions.
