CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #050303 - Thursday, March 10, 2005
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News

CELEBRATING OUR 15th YEAR COVERING CABARET ALL OVER THE WORLD!
NOW - BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER!

If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

This is the MIDWEEK Issue this of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, which includes news, breaking stories and notes, cabaret tips, announcements of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE reviews, plus listings of shows offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. The MONDAY Issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE includes cabaret listings for around the world, and also includes information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website.

ATTENTION AOL USERS: Over 150 newsletters sent out to AOL subscribers have been bouncing back each issue - with no resolution coming from AOL in spite of promises. Apparently this is because of some new "spam-blocking" software that AOL is using. All copies of past issues are archived on the website, and I have added links to the online copies of the past several issues on the opening BREAKING NEWS PAGE. I have been attempting to resolve this problem for over a week and hopefully today's issue will go through to all subscribers - sorry for the inconvenience.

On Monday we once again had to split the issue into 2 mailings because of the size of the listings section. As more and more clubs send me information, the Monday issues get longer and longer. I know many folks get a little annoyed with three e-mails from CABARET HOTLINE a week and I have been seeking a simple solution but can't find one method that will make everyone happy - but then again, all of life is like that, I guess. Once again, your comments and suggestions are invited.

In the meantime, visits to the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website continue to increase - and folks are starting to visit the various area-related web pages. I need news to fill those NEWS BRIEFS items, especially news from the Southeast and Southwest areas, New Jersey and Upstate NY. I know there are cabaret events going on all over the world, and there is no charge to run your news item or listing - just make sure the information is complete. I actually had another item sent me this week where the performer never included their last name! Once again, I need the full address and phone number of the performance venue (I have over 300 venues in my database, but I just might not have the one you send in); I need the first and last names of all taking part, including musical director, director, band members and back up singers if used; I need to know the cover charge and minimum; oh, and don't forget the time, date - and day of the week. And please, send the information about 3 weeks in advance (not 2 days and not 2 months in advance).

It's been a hectic 10 days and I am thankful that I have the comfort of cabaret to relieve some of my stress (I have missed my subway stop three times and nearly got off one train a stop early because I was not paying attention but deep in thought). No time to write reviews or even add articles to the website, but thank you to all the great performers I have seen and enjoyed since the first of the month! There is nothing like a great cabaret show to clear the mind and restore the heart!

And Friday night will mark the opening of NYC's newest cabaret space, at the new club THE ENCORE (266 West 47th Street, NYC - 212-221-3960 - http://www.theencorenyc.com/ ). Two fine performers will be opening their runs on Friday nights - Julie Reyburn in the 7:00 pm slot and Lumiri Tubo at 9:30 pm. I stopped by the piano bar last night and was told that reservations for both shows are adding up quite quickly, so if you have not called in your reservations, get on the phone promptly after 4:00 pm. This will be a gala night and everyone who is anyone is bound to be there.

Saturday at 5:00 pm, Georga Osborne makes her ENCORE debut, with her acclaimed show "Summer In the Attic (Some're Not)" - repeated on Tuesday the 15th at 8:00 pm. Then on Saturday night Judy Kreston & David Lahm debut their new show at 9:30 pm at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/ ) - "Remembering Cy: Celebrating the Music of Cy Coleman" with Tim Ferguson, bass and Bobby Shankin, drums. The show is directed by Richard Hendrickson.

Then on Sunday, Helen Baldasarre starts her 4-show run at THE ENCORE (266 West 47th Street, NYC - 212-221-3960 - http://www.theencorenyc.com/ ) and on Monday, MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs - http://www.macnyc.com/ ) has their "Business of Cabaret" seminar in the same room at 6:00 pm. I'll head downtown to THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/ ) after the seminar to catch the return of the amazing Ritt Henn at 9:30 pm. Then, uptown to a private birthday party for two great cabaret/pianobar talents, names, time and place I promised not to publish.

I'll be at Georga's Tuesday show, and on Wednesday the 16th at THE LIGHTHOUSE (111 East 59th Street, NYC) at 6:00 pm for the MAC/ASCAP showcase, then to DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/ ) for Gina Caruso's show at 9:00 pm. Thursday it's BROADWAY CHATTERBOX at MAMA'S at 6:00 pm and then a quick cab ride to UPSTAIRS AT ROSE'S TURN (55 Grove Street, NYC - 1-212-366-5438 - http://www.rosesturn.com/ ) for Bronwyn Rucker's birthday show at 7:00 pm (save me some cake!).

Of course, on Friday morning, the 18th, I am at PENN STATION early to catch AMTRAK to Boston, which brings me to my next item.

I'll be in Boston on March 18th through 20th, and in an effort to conserve funds, I am asking all my Boston area friends to send me suggestions for inexpensive hotel rooms (or if anyone has a spare bedroom for me and a friend for 3 nights let me know). We will be spending most of our time at the BACA (Boston Association of Cabaret Artists - http://www.bostoncabaret.com/ ) "Cabaret Celebration" at JIMMY TINGLE'S OFF BROADWAY THEATER (Davis Square, Somerville, MA), and the rest the time sightseeing in Boston (my friend's first visit there), so fancy accommodations are not necessary - just close to mass transit, since I won't have a car, and neither of us have driver's licenses (we're New Yorkers). We plan to arrive around 2:00 pm on Friday, the 18th via AMTRAK and will be returning to NYC on Sunday, the 20th around 10:00 am.

Speaking of places to sleep, I've been out and about, hunting for a new place to live - and seeking a new room mate for my current apartment, in case I decide to stay. This is a result of the fact that my current room mate is moving out on March 31st and there is no way I can afford this apartment on my own. If you know of a small studio or a share with my own bedroom - large enough for me and my computer - for less than $800 per month, convenient to transportation (I don't have a car), let me know. I don't smoke, have no pets and usually am very quietly working on my computer. I am home most days, out most evenings.

Or, if you or anyone your know is looking for a nice, quiet apartment, own bedroom, share bathroom, dining room, kitchen and large living room for less than $800, let me know (share gas & electric & DirecTV costs - bring your own TV). A bus to the east side of Manhattan (58th & Second Avenue in 1/2 hour and operates 24 hours) is just about 100 steps from my front door - or take the bus to the "R" train that will get you to Times Square in less than 40 minutes, Herald Square in 45 minutes and Union Square in less than 50 minutes, and by switching to the "E" two stops down, in Chelsea or The Village in less than 50 minutes as well. There is a small park across the street, plenty of on-street parking available (no meters, no time limits) and two small shopping centers with supermarkets, banks, pizza shops and Chinese take-out within blocks. Very convenient to LaGuardia Airport (just over the hill) but far enough away from the flight path that you barely know its there. Smoker is OK - just not in my bedroom/office area.

In any case, expenses will be greater than normal for the next few months, so your banner ads, side-bar banner ads and membership donations will be extra special to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE as we face yet another challenge.

In addition, apartment searching will take me away from my work many times over the next few weeks, so if your item or release does not appear on the website or in the newsletter immediately, please be patient - noting that CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is strictly a one-man operation.

MORE NEWS FROM CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE

CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR MORE NEWS
I get plenty of show and event listings sent me - far more than I can possibly use - it is really difficult trying to choose which ones to publish, which ones to set aside. Sometimes the item itself makes this choice - incomplete information or just a scan of a flier, neither of which is useful to me. I would love to have more items from outside NYC, especially NEWS items - new venues opening, benefits, CD Releases, celebrations, new pianos, etc. Include a website link if available.

GET YOUR MESSAGE OUT! - FOR FREE! - WITH NO HASSLES!
Please don't miss out on another feature of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ ) - the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE CHAT BOARD - where anyone, anywhere, can post information about their shows, CDs or other cabaret-related event. You can also post requests and questions about cabaret performance, and share your thoughts and ideas of cabaret. You don't have to be a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, you don't have to fill out a form, and you don't need to remember one of those dreaded passwords. All you need to do is follow the rules - clearly posted on the board - before you make a posting. I will remove your message if I deem it inappropriate. Fully 70% of visitors to the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ ) visit the CHAT BOARD.

All new and renewal memberships are now designated for the 2004-2005 membership year, which ends on July 5th, 2005. SILVER memberships are $20, and GOLD supporting memberships are available for $75. Memberships are available for greater amounts as well. For information on becoming a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, check at http://svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml or else just send me a note at membership@svhamstra.com with the single word "membership" in the subject line, and I'll send all the details. You can even make your membership donation by credit card, using PayPal. If you make your donation by check, please make the check payable simply to Stu Hamstra and send to 676A Ninth Avenue #120, New York, NY 10036.

When the 2005-2006 memberships become available on May 5th (the membership year starts on July 6th, but you get 2 extra months no extra charge), $10 from all GOLD memberships and $5 from all SILVER memberships received will be set aside for non-NYC reviewers. At that time, hopefully, we will be able to contact writers in other cabaret areas as well - ATLANTA, TEXAS, DC, AUSTRALIA, LONDON and wherever else cabaret thrives.

CABARET NEWS ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other shows around the country and around the world can be found on the BREAKING NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ ). How do you get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. By the way, I try to get information about shows offering CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discounts up on the website first. I am also especially interested in releases on shows outside the NYC area.

Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. With two newsletters going out a week, I don't have enough time to look these things up, and often have to simply toss out incomplete items. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.

At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise? Please remember that the website, the newsletter, the reviews and my own personal visits to cabaret shows and events are entirely dependent on your support, through membership and other donations, and banner advertising.

Once again a great big thank you to the nearly 375 folks who have joined and/or rejoined CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE as members for the 2004-2005 membership year, which runs until July 5th. Over 450 joined last membership year. Your support through memberships and banner advertising keeps this whole operation going and growing. And that is just about the way it was.
