Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret
News
CELEBRATING
OUR 15th YEAR COVERING CABARET ALL OVER THE WORLD!
NOW - BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER!
If it's
anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!
This is the MIDWEEK Issue this of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, which includes
news, breaking stories and notes, cabaret tips, announcements of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE reviews, plus listings of shows offering discounts
to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. The MONDAY Issue of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE includes cabaret listings for around the world, and
also includes information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website.
ATTENTION AOL USERS: Over
150 newsletters sent out to AOL subscribers were bounced back on Monday
- apparently because of some new "spam-blocking" software that AOL
is using. Some folks reported not receiving last week Thursday's issue
as well. All copies of past issues are archived on the website, and
I have added links to the online copies of the past four issues on
the opening BREAKING NEWS PAGE. I have been attempting to resolve
this problem through my ISP and hopefully this issue will go through
to all subscribers - sorry for the inconvenience.
On Monday we were forced
to split the issue into 2 mailings because of the size of the listings
section. As more and more clubs send me information, the Monday issues
get longer and longer. I know many folks get a little annoyed with
three e-mails from CABARET HOTLINE a week and I have been seeking
a simple solution but can't find one method that will make everyone
happy - but then again, all of life is like that, I guess. Once again,
your comments and suggestions are invited.
Once again, it is very
possible that I will need a new place to live on April 1st, since
my current room mate is moving out on that date and there is no way
I can afford this apartment on my own. If you know of a small studio
or a share with my own bedroom for less than $800 per month, convenient
to transportation (I don't have a car), let me know. I don't smoke
and usually am very quietly working on my computer. I am home most
days, out most evenings. The other solution is to find a new room
mate to move in here - and if you or anyone your know is looking for
a nice, quiet apartment, own bedroom, share bathroom, dining room,
kitchen and large living room for less than $800, let me know (share
gas & electric & DirecTV costs - bring your own TV). A bus to the
east side of Manhattan (58th & Second Avenue in 1/2 hour and operates
24 hours) is just about 100 steps from my front door - or take the
bus to the "R" train that will get you to Times Square in less than
40 minutes, Herald Square in 45 minutes and Union Square in less than
50 minutes. There is a small park across the street, plenty of on-street
parking available (no meters, no time limits) and two small shopping
centers within blocks. Very convenient to LaGuardia Airport (just
over the hill) but far enough away from the flight path that you barely
know its there. Smoker is OK - just not in my bedroom area.
In any
case, expenses will be greater than normal for the next few months,
so your banner ads, side-bar banner ads and membership donations
will be extra special to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE as we face yet another
challenge.
In addition,
apartment searching will take me away from my work many times over
the next few weeks, so if your item or release does not appear on
the website or in the newsletter immediately, please be patient
- noting that CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is strictly a one-man operation.
SAD NEWS - CHICAGO CLUB
OWNER DAVID EDWARDS DIES
Chicago music lovers are
mourning the loss of David Edwards, who owned two very popular clubs
in Chicago, GENTRY ON HALSTED (3320 North Halsted Street, Chicago,
IL - 773-348-1053 - http://www.gentryofchicago.com/
) and GENTRY ON STATE (440 North State Street, Chicago, IL - 312-836-0933
- http://www.gentryofchicago.com/ ). David passed away around 2:00
am Monday morning, February 28th. There will be a memorial service
sometime in March. Unlike many other clubs, the GENTRY venues paid
performers for their appearances, creating a listening room, where
the performers were not dependent on the cover charge to learn more
about making music and to develop a crowd. Beckie Menzie, a regular
at the State Street club, writes: "I worked for him for over 16 years
... never once worried about missing a paycheck and he always let
me do my job. I don't think he had any intention of being some music
visionary. He just wanted a bar that made money and made good music.
Simple." Those that knew Mr. Edwards are invited to express and share
their thoughts and photos at a special website, http://www.rememberingdavid.com/.

HOTLINE ONLINE
PROMOTE YOUR SHOW, CD OR
OTHER EVENT TWO WAYS ON THE WEBSITE
If you are planning on
running a banner for your show or CD in February or March, be sure
to get your order in. I limit the number of ads to 20 per week and
in some weeks only a few slots remain. Please let me know if you wish
to reserve space and for which weeks (banners run from Sunday through
Saturday). A banner ad for three weeks can cost as little as $108
total - if you take advantage of the PayPal and Member Deals discounts
- and even less if you are a GOLD member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.
SILVER members receive a one-time rebate of $20 on their first banner
ad of the membership year.
Performers
running banners get a special listing for their show or other cabaret-related
item in every MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, reaching nearly
2,500 subscribers. Go to http://svhamstra.com/BannerHere.shtml
or else just send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com
with the single word "banners" in the subject line, and I'll send
all the details.
To even
better serve performers and venues outside the NYC area, now you
are able to advertise your "out of NYC" cabaret event on area page
sets for a mere $25 ($20 for CABARET HOTLINE MEMBERS) for 4 continuous
weeks of display - or just pennies more than $6 per week, less than
a dollar-a-day. Some areas are available for $20 per month! The
"side-bar" ads will appear in four places: on the local NEWS BRIEFS
pages, on the local VENUE pages, on the local LISTINGS pages and
the local REVIEW index pages for PENNSYLVANIA, BOSTON, CHICAGO,
LOS ANGELES and SAN FRANCISCO. (Localized ads are not available
on the NYC area pages at this time). They are also available at
the lower price for the New Jersey/New York State, Southeast/Southwest,
London and Australia NEWS BRIEFS pages, VENUE pages and LISTINGS
pages.

AT UPSTAIRS AT ROSE'S TURN (55 Grove Street, NYC - 1-212-366-5438
- http://www.rosesturn.com/
)
Upstairs at Rose's Turn
has long been known as a launching pad for some of today's rising
performers. The tradition continues with cabaret newcomers Brian and
Ted Farley, whose impressive debut in early December created such
a buzz that they are truly back by popular demand. The show simply
titled "The Farley Brothers" showcases these adorable siblings as
they sing, dance and laugh about growing up as gay brothers in New
York. These irrepressible young baritones can sing any genre of music
including Broadway, pop, gospel, and country music. Equally at ease
with comedy material, Brian & Ted do playful justice to "Alice" and
"Which Way Does He Swing?" written by cabaret notables John McMahon
and Jay Jeffries. The brothers Farley are also responsible for their
own delightful choreography which fits perfectly on the small stage.
Musical direction is by John McMahon. The Farley Brothers will have
performances Friday March 4th & 11th at 8:00 pm. There is a $10 cover
charge plus a 2-drink minimum. $8 cover charge for members of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE.
Kevin Scott Hall has conducted
over 40 workshops since 1995, helping over 200 students realize their
dream of singing in an intimate Big Apple nightclub. His workshops

intensively to help each participant refine a 10-minute set, to be
performed in two showcases at the end of the six-week workshop. New
classes will begin on Tuesday, March 22nd. Prospective students can
call Kevin Scott Hall at 212-262-2577 or check out http://www.kevinscotthall.com
for additional information. Class shows for Kevin Scott Hall's "That
Singing Feeling" current vocal workshops will take place on Sunday
& Monday, March 6th & 7th at 7:00 pm. There is a $10 cover, 2-drink

Famous" now in its fifth year, returns for another season. Five women
comedians on a Saturday night and it's not a festival? No, it's Shecky
Beagleman, Gilda Konrad, Suzanne O'Neill, Janet Rosen, and Jane Stroll
in "If We Were Men We'd Be Famous". The off-beat stand-up comedy and
storytelling of these five funny females leaves audiences laughing
and agreeing with their boastful-but-true title. The girls have appeared
on "Up All Night with Gilbert Gottfried", "Late Night with Conan O'Brien"
and "Girls Night Out" Performances are Saturday March 12th & 26th
at 9PM. There is a $10 cover charge plus a 2-drink minimum. $5 cover

CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
ALWAYS LOOKING FOR MORE NEWS
I get plenty of show and
event listings sent me - far more than I can possibly use - it is
really difficult trying to choose which ones to publish, which ones
to set aside. Sometimes the item itself makes this choice - incomplete
information or just a scan of a flier, neither of which is useful
to me. I would love to have more items from outside NYC, especially
NEWS items - new venues opening, benefits, CD Releases, celebrations,
new pianos, etc. Include a website link if available.

Please don't miss out on
another feature of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/

can post information about their shows, CDs or other cabaret-related
event. You can also post requests and questions about cabaret performance,
and share your thoughts and ideas of cabaret. You don't have to be
a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, you don't have to fill out a form,
and you don't need to remember one of those dreaded passwords. All
you need to do is follow the rules - clearly posted on the board -
before you make a posting. I will remove your message if I deem it
inappropriate. Fully 70% of visitors to the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE

HAVE YOU GOOGLED YOURSELF
YET?
Performers, try this simple
test: check out your name with the special "Google" search panel at
the top of my home page and see how many times your name comes up
on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. Be sure to enclose your name
in quotation marks, such as "Stu Hamstra" to refine the search. And
if it comes up more than 10 times, and your aren't yet a member of
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, what's holding you back from joining? And
if it doesn't show up at all, let me know.

are available for $75. Memberships are available for greater amounts
as well. For information on becoming a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE,
check at http://svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml

with the single word "membership" in the subject line, and I'll send
all the details. You can even make your membership donation by credit
card, using PayPal. If you make your donation by check, please make
the check payable simply to Stu Hamstra and send to 676A Ninth Avenue

CABARET NEWS ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other
shows around the country and around the world can be found on the
BREAKING NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/
). How do you get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of
at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your
show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in
jpg or gif format if available. By the way, I try to get information
about shows offering CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discounts up on the website
first. I am also especially interested in releases on shows outside
the NYC area.
Please
send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy
of your flier or a reference to a website. With two newsletters
going out a week, I don't have enough time to look these things
up, and often have to simply toss out incomplete items. By the way,
I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive
before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't
count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.

the website, the newsletter, the reviews and my own personal visits

Once again
a great big thank you to the nearly 375 folks who have joined and/or
rejoined CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE as members for the 2004-2005 membership
