CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE #041206 - Monday, December 20, 2004
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News
If it's anything
to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!
This is a MONDAY Issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE which includes cabaret
listings for around the world, and also includes information on all
the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. The MID-WEEK
issue, normally sent on Thursdays, will include more news, breaking
stories and notes, cabaret tips, mini-reviews, plus listings of shows
offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.
SPECIAL NOTE:
This is a special DOUBLE ISSUE, since there will be no issue of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE published on Thursday this week. A look a club schedules
shows that this time of year (the last 2 weeks in December) many of
the venues turn over their cabaret rooms for corporate and private
parties, and there are few cabaret events to announce.
Next week,
we will publish a combined issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE on Monday,
the 27th and then a SPECIAL NEW YEAR'S issue with a wrap-up of the
cabaret events of 2004 and a look forward to 2005 on Friday, December
31st. Meantime, we wish all of our subscribers and friends a very
blessed Holiday season and a very happy and prosperous New Year.
In connection with the above,
many of the items in our listings are on-going weekly events (especially
piano bars and open mic events), which are sometimes changed during
holiday times. It is always wise to call ahead to make sure that the
venue you plan to visit is open for regular hours - some clubs close
on the holidays, some have shorter hours. Plus, since there are so few
cabaret offerings over the next few weeks, it is very prudent to make
a reservation in advance - many shows sell out.
Baby, it's cold outside!
It was 10 degrees (F) this morning when I awoke, and now, at noon, it
is just 14 degrees (F) and the weatherperson says "feels like zero."
There was just a light dusting of snow here in Long Island City overnight.
I stayed indoors all weekend, still not wishing to bring about a return
of that nasty cold I was suffering last week. But now I feel great and
I shall see what I will do tonight, since I am getting just a bit "stir
crazy" in the apartment.
Here in NYC there is no MAC
(Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs - http://www.macnyc.com/
) Holiday Party scheduled for this year. Also, unlike the past few years,
there has been no announcement of MAC members visiting the firehouses
to sing holiday carols as in the past few years (since September 11th).
So, here's one more plug for a special event where MAC members can network
and spread their holiday greetings:
The annual
HOLIDAY SHOWCASE, sponsored by MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets
& Clubs - http://www.macnyc.com/
) AND ASCAP (The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers
- http://www.ascap.org/
) will be held this year on Tuesday, December 21st at THE LIGHTHOUSE
(111 East 59th Street, NYC) at 6:00 pm. Special guest is Steve Ross.
The show will feature songs and/or performances by Francesca Blumenthal,
David Buskin, Randi Driscoll, Kelly Dupuis, Brian Feinstein, Zina
Goldrich, Robert Grusecki, Diana Hansen-Young, Jeff Lazarus, Marcy
Heisler, Mary Liz McNamara, Tracy Newirth, Marc Smollin, Jane Scheckter,
Georgia Stitt, Tom Toce, Anya Turner and Ronny Whyte. There is a $15
admission, $5 for MAC and ASCAP members.
Check out a new feature on
the website: iTunes Cabaret CD Pick of the week - you can download the
CD for $9.99 or single songs for just 99 cents! We will feature a new
CD starting on Sundays - this week we feature Karen Oberlin's "My Standards."
You will need to download the iTunes application, available for PC or
Mac, if you do not already have it on your computer. On my website you
can also find a link to download iTunes' featured "single" of the week
- for free.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING ON NEW
YEAR'S EVE?
If you are doing or sponsoring
a New Year's Eve cabaret event - send me the details. I need the name
& address & reservation phone number of the venue, complete cover/minimum
information, as well as name of performers, musical director, etc. The
collected information is posted on a special page on the CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE website, updated regularly. Thanks for your help.
I have a lot of news for
you, including listings of shows at over 100 venues and covering over
300 performances (with a number offering discounts to members of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE). Once again I promise that you will read things in this
issue you will not find published anywhere else. Now on with the news:

MY WISH FOR THE NEW YEAR
- REVIEWS FROM ALL OVER
The REVIEWS section of the
website is still in the process of renovation. In addition to adding
reprints of the mini-reviews from the MID-WEEK ISSUES of CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE, and moving pre-2003 reviews to a special ARCHIVES section, I
have decided to seek folks to write reviews other areas as well. Up
to now there have been no funds to accomplish this, but I have a new
idea. $10 of every membership received from folks living outside the
NYC area and $5 from every membership received from folks in the NYC
area will be set aside in a special fund to pay for non-NYC reviews.
A very special subscriber has already donated a gift of $100 towards
this fund. When the initial goal of $200 is received, we will try to
make arrangements with writers in BOSTON, CHICAGO, LOS ANGELES and SAN
FRANCISCO as a start. So far, the "fund" stands at $140.
If you live
outside the NYC area, especially in one of these "starter" cities,
now is a good time to join - and support cabaret and cabaret artists
in your communities. If we don't reach our $200 goal by December 31st,
we will try to come up with a new idea to raise funds in order to
cover non-NYC events. When the 2005-2006 memberships become available
on May 5th (the membership year starts on July 6th), $10 from all
GOLD memberships and $5 from all SILVER memberships received will
be set aside for non-NYC reviewers.
If you live
in one of these areas and would like to join our staff as a local
reporter/reviewer, drop me a line (stuhamstra@svhamstra.com)
and we will discuss our needs, our rules and proper compensation possibilities.
If successful, and if funds permit, we will add other cities as well.
PROMOTE YOUR SHOW, CD OR
OTHER EVENT WITH A BANNER ON THE WEBSITE
I don't want you to miss
out if you are planning on running a banner for your show for January.
I limit the number of ads to 20 per week. A banner ad for three weeks
can cost as little as $108 total - if you take advantage of the PayPal
and Member Deals discounts - and even less if you are a GOLD member
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. SILVER members receive a one-time rebate
of $20 on their first banner ad of the membership year.
Performers
running banners get a special listing for their show or other cabaret-related
item in every MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, reaching nearly
2,500 subscribers. Go to http://svhamstra.com/BannerHere.shtml
or else just send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com
with the single word "banners" in the subject line, and I'll send
all the details.
SPECIAL TO MEMBERS OF CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE
All members are entitled
to promote their CDs on the special CD SALES page on the website - and
I think I have filled all the requests sent in correctly. I spent my
"nights off" adding about 40 new pages, but I need you to check to make
sure that the proper links are included, and if your CD is missing or
a link is incorrect, let me know at once. If you are 2004-2005 Member
and have not yet requested that your CDs be included, drop me a line
and we will see how quickly it can be added.
IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter
I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find
published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise? But once again I have
gone way over my self-imposed 10,000 word limit - this is a "double
issue." Remember, no CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter until next Monday,
December 27th.
Once again
a great big thank you to the nearly 350 folks who have joined and/or
rejoined CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE as members for the 2004-2005 membership
year. Over 450 joined last membership year, which ended on July 5th.
Your continued support will make CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE bigger and
better in the months to come. SILVER basic memberships are $20, and
GOLD supporting memberships are $75. Memberships are available for
greater amounts as well. For information on becoming a contributing
member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, check at http://svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml
or else just send me a note at membership@svhamstra.com
with the single word "membership" in the subject line, and I'll send
all the details. You can even make your donation by credit card, using
PayPal. If you make your donation by check, please make the check
payable simply to Stu Hamstra and send to 676A Ninth Avenue #120,
New York, NY 10036.
Wishing everyone
a very blessed holiday and don't forget to include cabaret in your
holiday entertainment plans.
And that
is just about the way it was.
