CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #031208 - Monday, December 29, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News

If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

This is a MONDAY Issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE which includes cabaret listings for around the world, and also includes information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. The MID-WEEK issue, normally sent on Thursdays, includes more news, breaking stories and notes. There will be no MID-WEEK issue this week, so items usually found there will be included in this issue.

This is the last issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for 2003 - and what a year it has been, both in cabaret and the world at large! In a few days we begin a New Year, and as always, we all hope it will be better than the last.

A look at cabaret schedules from around the world shows that cabaret activity has once again taken a year-end breather. I did get a chance to catch the last performance of D. Jay Bradley's Annual Christmas show at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) last Monday night, the 22nd of December. The only other show I saw all week was Michael Conley's amazing show on Saturday, the 27th, also at DON'T TELL MAMA. This very talented young songwriter has an interesting and unique outlook on life - a very delightful, surprise-filled show to be sure!

On Christmas eve I decided to have the first CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE "office Christmas party" so I treated my staff (Dennis) to dinner at REGENTS (317 East 53rd Street, NYC - 212-593-3091 - http://www.RegentsClub.com). With no cabaret shows to run off to, and many of the clubs closed for the evening, we could have a relaxed dinner, and then we "retired" upstairs to the piano bar, where Teri White was bartending and Barrett Taylor was at the piano. We were among the first to drop by, but within the hour the room was packed with customers, many taking a turn at the open mike. Of course we begged Teri to sing several times, and a few glasses of wine later, we bid our good-byes and Merry Christmases and "retired" for the night.

I actually spent a very quiet Christmas, home alone, putting the final touches on the membership mailing list, since Dennis would be arriving early on Friday morning to help me get the new membership cards into the mail. It also gave me a chance to get an actual and accurate count as well. The CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE membership list is actually in 4 places - a member e-mail list, on the member pages of the website, in my mailing list database, and on a new list in a new program that will combine the name/address database with a new e-mail program (cutting my work by half, eventually). But the 4 lists have never truly been coordinated, and Dennis had spent Monday and Tuesday doing just that.

The result? I am proud to announce that there are, as of this morning, 381 actual members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - from 4 countries. My assistant's next project will be to see how many members reside in each of the major geographic areas. This will be important, as you will see in an announcement at the end of this newsletter.

CLARIFICATION

A few months ago, a lady from California sent me an e-mail. She had just attended a show performed by a person who noted in their publicity that they were a recipient of a cabaret award presented here in NYC. She found the show to be dreadful, and wondered how the award was decided. She didn't mention which award she was referring to (she did name the performer, and to some extent I agreed with her assessment), so I wrote her back with a summary of the various NYC cabaret awards, and how they were determined.

A few weeks ago, I included my comments to her in an article in the newsletter regarding awards. Of course, never content to leave things be, I "touched up" the item here and there (in another life used to edit a magazine, and I could not resist editing myself). And in the rewrite, an important word got dropped in my description of the NEW YORK NIGHTLIFE AWARDS. Here is exactly what I wrote:

"The NIGHTLIFE awards attempt to avoid the shortcomings of the BACK STAGE setup (the Siegels were formerly reviewers for BACK STAGE) by including a larger number of judges - 20 or so - to make their choices. Unfortunately, these 20 are asked to cover jazz and comedy performances as well as cabaret, covering perhaps 70 to 100 or more venues, if you tally up all the nightspots offering live performances. Only a portion of these judges cover cabaret, and only a few of these cover the wide breadth of cabaret offerings in NYC, concentrating mainly on performers in the very posh, high-priced cabaret venues."

The last sentence should have read (note words in all caps): "Only a portion of these judges cover cabaret, and only a few of these cover the wide breadth of cabaret offerings in NYC, OTHERS concentrating mainly on performers in the very posh, high-priced cabaret venues."

As a result of this editing error, there was a brief flurry of items placed on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE MESSAGE BOARD, I received several phone calls and e-mails, and even had a brief but impassioned discussion or two. Now I received a formal request to publish a correction, since it was felt that the item as published was discouraging folks from attending this year's NIGHT LIFE show. As all are well aware, I have been unflagging in my support of this show, the MAC Awards show, the BACK STAGE Bistro Awards gala (when they held them), every year they have been occurred. I have passed along information about these events time and again - sometimes with special issues and bulletins.

If you read the article in its entirety, (in the ARCHIVES under Issue #031204, Friday, December 12, 2003 (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/L031204.shtml ) you will see I pointed out that there was no perfect cabaret award system - each has its shortcomings. There was no attempt to single out a particular award, or criticize a particular group of judges or individuals.

While I am clarifying, I also must note that near the end of the above item, I mentioned that recently a MAC Award was discovered on sale at the annual BROADWAY CARES/EQUITY FIGHTS AIDS (http://www.bcefa.org/) Flea Market. I received an e-mail from the actual purchaser of the award informing me that it was purchased for two dollars, not 50 cents.

I'M ALWAYS LOOKING FOR MORE NEWS

I get plenty of show listings sent me - far more than I can possibly use - it is really difficult trying to choose which ones to run, which ones to set aside. Sometimes the item itself makes this choice - incomplete information or just a scan of a flier, neither of which is useful to me. I would love to have more items from outside NYC, especially NEWS items - new venues opening, benefits, CD Releases, celebrations, new pianos, etc. Add a website link if available. I have news ready to print about two new cabaret venues - already in operation - but one contains no reservation phone number or cover information, and the other did not include the exact street address.

CABARET IN MY POCKET

Meantime, I have uploaded more CDs to my cute little iPod - it goes with me wherever I go, and I am hearing those cabaret CDs without interruption as I make my travels from home to Manhattan, between shows, and while shopping. What an amazing way to listen to music! Of the CDs heard, here are some of my favorites so far (alphabetical by album title):

AT THE BEGINNING - Stacy Sullivan - Astounding vocals - I love this one! So simply presented, yet so completely captivating. I must dig out the rest of the CDs she has sent me and add them to my iPod collection.

LISTEN TO MY HEART - Live Cast Recording - Songs of David Friedman - 2 CD set - You can't find a better collection of wonderful songs, great cast, brilliant production. Immediately destined for my top-10 list.

OLD FRIENDS - Tony Andriacchi & Peter Polzak - Put a log on the fire, settle back with a loved one, and put this one on the player - incredibly romantic. Tony's a crooner who rejoined his original accompanist to record this CD after 15 years away from a microphone after a chance meeting.

STORY SONGS - Denise Whittier - Ms. Whittier and I have been corresponding by e-mail for years - she lived in the hinterlands of Vermont. She's made the move to NYC and handed me this debut CD the other night. Its a cabaret show in a box, with all the great story songwriters represented. Exquisite!

Plus to Fun Revues - recorded live:

BLACK & WHITE BLUES - Live Cast Recording - This is the brilliant show about restaurant workers that I travelled to New Orleans to see. It is still running at LE CHAT NOIR (715 St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans, LA - 504-581-5812 - http://www.lechatnoir.citysearch.com/), and this CD will explain why. Funny, clever, witty and I'm told by folks in the profession, quite accurate.

NOT ME - Hector Coris - He's Hispanic and gay, yet doesn't speak Spanish and doesn't act the act or walk the walk. What's a fella to do? Write and then record, a cabaret show. A bundle of laughs!

More in the next issue.

This $10 SILVER membership offer expires on May 5th, 2004.

If you find these messages and the information and news on the website of value, then I hope you will consider becoming a member today. I depend on your membership donations and the banner ads to make this service possible. MEMBERS CAN HELP CHOOSE CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE'S "BEST OF 2003" AWARD

Members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will be able to cast their ballot for the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE "BEST OF 2003" INTERNATIONAL CABARET AWARD. All members of record on January 31st, 2004, will be sent a special ballot - on which they can choose their own personal "Best Of" cabaret nominee. The only requirement, besides being a member, is that you must have actually attended a performance by your chosen nominee in the year 2003 - and you can send in up to three names. It is preferred that you choose someone in your geographical area - we will be listing "winners" in the following areas: NYC, WASHINGTON DC, BOSTON (NE), CHICAGO (MW), ATLANTA (SE), TEXAS (SW), LOS ANGELES, SAN FRANCISCO, AUSTRALIA and UK. I may add one or two more areas if needs arise. I will be posting a count of member totals in each area in a forthcoming issue. More instructions will be sent to current members in a few days as well.

There are no categories, but the performer you chose must have performed in 2003 in an actual, self-contained cabaret show - not a showcase, benefit, guest appearance, piano bar, etc.

By the way, all members will also be able to take part in the annual MAC AWARD Straw Poll, voting on their favorites as soon as the MAC Final Ballot is available. This straw poll is for entertainment purposes only and the poll results are not to be used in publicity and press releases.

A SILVER membership is now only $10 - though May 5th.

AWARD SEASON ON ITS WAY - GET YOUR BANNER AD ORDER IN NOW

Once the cabaret award season gets into full swing, folks begin ordering banners on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to promote their shows, their CDs, and their websites - keeping their name before the public and the voters. Once the preliminary ballots go out, the orders pour in here. Don't be left out, since I limit the number of banners displayed each week. Banner slots are assigned on a first ordered and paid basis. For information on banner ads, check out the banner information page on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml), or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com with the single word "Banner" in the subject line and I'll send all the details.

IT'S TIME TO GO

As a enlightened employer, I am taking my assistant, Dennis, for dinner at DANNY'S GRAND SEA PALACE (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/) tonight, since it is his birthday. Then he is going off with his friends for some dancing (an activity I never bothered to attempt). I'll head back home - Mondays and Thursdays are "newsletter" days and I am usually exhausted by 9:00 pm.

Tomorrow night I am at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) for a cabaret double-header, with Andrew Gans at 6:30 pm and "Windows of Lucidity" at 8:30 pm. On New Year's Eve I am very tempted to head to WORLD CAFE (201 Columbus Avenue, NYC - 212-799-8090) for THE LOUNGE-O-LEERS, or to REGENTS (317 East 53rd Street, NYC - 212-593-3091 - http://www.RegentsClub.com), or maybe BRANDY'S PIANO BAR (235 East 84th Street, NYC - 1-212-744-4949 - http://www.brandyspianobar.com/). Or even THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/) or ROSE'S TURN (55 Grove Street, NYC - 1-212-366-5438 - http://www.rosesturn.com/). Maybe all in a row! Anyway, I don't plan to be in the TIMES SQUARE area.

On Sunday, January 4th, I get a second shot at celebrating Christmas when I head downtown to Upstairs at THE STONEWALL BAR on Christopher Street where old friend Tree holds his annual Russian Christmas party starting around 5:00 pm and lasting till about 9:00 pm.

Next issue is on Monday, January 5th, giving me a lot of time to add new items to the BREAKING NEWS page, now that the membership cards are nearly out. I have just Canada, Australia and UK letters to mail - just checking to see if I formatted the addresses correctly.

I want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a blessed and prosperous New Year. Thanks once more to all the folks who sent in their membership donations these past weeks. We are now listing exactly 381 members, as we make our way the way towards our goal of 400 members for 2003-2004. Remember, a SILVER membership is now only $10 - though May 5th. Make checks payable simply to Stu Hamstra and mail to 676A Ninth Avenue, #120 - New York, NY 10036.

Our next regular issue will be on Monday, January 5th, after which will return to the 2-issue per week format.

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
