CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE #031008 - Monday, October 27, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News
If it's anything
to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!
This is a
MONDAY Issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE which includes cabaret listings
for around the world, and also includes information on all the banner
ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website plus more news,
breaking stories and notes. The MID-WEEK issue, normally sent on Thursdays,
includes more news, breaking stories and notes, and news on shows
offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, plus mini-reviews
on shows I have seen.
It is a rainy
- yet fairly warm - day, perfect for writing another issue of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE! So, here goes:
I SIMPLY CAN'T WRITE ABOUT
EVERYONE!
After every
issue I get a few e-mails from folks wondering why their show wasn't
mentioned. Well, it is simply impossible to mention every show running
- there are over 60 shows running each week in NYC alone, plus other
shows happening all over the USA and the world. And occasionally I
have to trim shows off an issue because the issue gets too long to
send - AOL compresses and even truncates issues over a certain length.
Note, I will mention your show in every MONDAY issue if you have a
banner ad running - and every MID-WEEK issue if you are offering a
discount to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE (and include this information
on your fliers and press releases). Other items are added on a space-available
basis, keeping in mind that, since most banner ads and show discounts
cover NYC area shows, I am more likely to choose a show from outside
the NYC area to give balance to each issue.
NYC CABARET CONVENTION
REPORTS ON THE WEBSITE
Thanks to
the fine work of Alan Krull, reports the first three shows of the
NYC MABEL MERCER CONVENTION are already on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).
Reports on two more shows will be posted later today or early tomorrow.
Please note: one of our reviewers took ill during th Friday performance,
so if you attended this show, please send in your thoughts and impressions,
and we will try to put together a report. The same with the Sunday
afternoon performance. A special thank you to all who volunteered
to write for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE this year and permit me to avoid
the task. It indeed was a relief, allowing me so see several shows
I would have missed if I went to the convention. I might even do this
every year!
CALLING ALL HALLOWEEN
SHOWS
The MID-WEEK
issue will (hopefully) give a rundown on all special Halloween shows
this weekend. If you have a show with a Halloween theme, send in the
details - and I mean details. I cannot use incomplete items, and please
send the information via e-mail - don't simply refer me to your website.
I need name of show, names of performers in show, musical director,
director, venue name, address and reservation phone number, cover
charge & minimum information - and if you are offering a discount
to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. I must have your information
by Wednesday afternoon, October 29th.

I'M ALWAYS LOOKING FOR
MORE NEWS
I get plenty
of show listings sent me - far more than I can possibly use - it is
really difficult trying to choose which ones to run, which ones to
set aside. Sometimes the item itself makes this choice - incomplete
information or just a scan of a flier, neither of which is useful
to me. I would love to have more items from outside NYC, especially
NEWS items - new venues opening, benefits, CD Releases, celebrations,
new pianos, etc. Add a website link if available. I have news ready
to print about two new cabaret venues - already in operation - but
one contains no reservation phone number or cover information, and
the other did not include the exact street address.
A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS
REMEMBER:
Each weekly issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter includes
a rundown of all the banner advertisers on the website - and these
items will be repeated as long as the banner is running. There is
a more complete article on nearly all these items in the BREAKING
NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).

NOVEMBER BANNER AD SLOTS
SELLING FAST
BANNER AD
spaces on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website were sold out for the
month of October, we had to turn down several requests. Keep in mind,
I limit the ads to 20 banners per week, so if you plan to order a
banner, reserve your banner space as far in advance as possible. A
lot of folks will want to start advertising their CDs for holiday
sales in November & December, so don't delay getting your order in.
Banner ads
are displayed at random in two places on nearly all 3,000 pages. This
means your ad could be seen as many as 3,000 times each day, 21,000
times each week! You can run a banner for 2 weeks on CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE for just $80 - in full color - with a "live link" to your website,
if applicable. That's before any member rebates or discounts. In addition,
those running banners get mentioned every week in the MONDAY issue
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail newsletter (current circulation nearly
2,500) as long as the banner is running.
For information
on banner ads, check out the banner information page on the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml),
or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com
with the single word "Banner" in the subject line and I send the details.

Nearly 350

I have tried to make the membership as inexpensive as possible, with
more benefits than ever - including discounts on selected cabaret
shows. If you find these messages and the information and news on
the website of value, then I hope you will consider becoming a member
today. I depend on your membership donations and the banner ads to
make this service possible. You can join for just $20 (SILVER LEVEL),
or get special discounts and additional benefits with a $75 (GOLD)
donation (20% discount on banners, etc.), or become a sponsoring member
at higher levels.
For information
on becoming a contributing member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, check
at http://svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml
or else just send me a note at membership@svhamstra.com
with the single word "membership" in the subject line, and I'll send
all the details. You can even send your donation by credit card via
PayPal - http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/PayPalPayment.shtml
- if you make your donation by check, please make the check payable
simply to Stu Hamstra and send to 676A Ninth Avenue #120, New York,

WISE TO OFFER SHOW DISCOUNTS
FROM THE START
Don't wait
until your third show to offer a cabaret discount - do it right from
the start and announce it on your fliers and press releases. If you
decide later, it just might be assumed that the show is doing poorly,
and such negative information about your show is not desirable. Remember,
an empty seat brings you no income at all - a seat filled with a member
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE at a discount brings you extra income, plus
a walking-talking advertisement for you and your show. CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE members are all cabaret lovers and are all "internet savvy"
- if they like your show, they are going to spread the word, almost
immediately.
There are
nearly two-dozen shows currently playing here in NYC offering discounts
to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE! New shows are lining up to offer
our members these savings. Shows offering the discount get a free
listing in the MIDWEEK issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE! You don't
have to even be a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to offer the discount.
(But I certainly would appreciate your membership donation, and your
membership will make it possible for you to get discounts to other
folks' shows.)
IT'S TIME TO GO
I don't have
any cabaret please for tonight - but I might just try to make it to
Steven Ray Watkins' show at MAMA ROSE'S (219 Second Avenue, NYC -
212-533-0558 - http://www.mamaroses.net/)
at 7:00 pm - I saw it a few weeks ago and believe me it is terrific.
On Tuesday, I'm back to MAMA ROSE'S for Martha Lorin's new show at
7:00 pm. Wednesday, its MAMA ROSE'S again for Richard Malavet's show
at 7:00 pm, then a quick trip to THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher
Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)
for Maria Gentile & Susan Campanaro at 9:00 pm. With a new club in
the East Village area, I have been having fun revisiting some of the
dining spots I enjoyed when I lived in the area in a previous lifetime
(the 70s). So much has changed since then, yet much is the same.
Thanks once
more to all the folks who sent in their membership donations these
past weeks. We are now listing over 325 members, more than three-quarters
the way towards out goal of 400 members for 2003-2004. Of course it
would be great if we could reach an even higher number, but we have
many more months to go before the next membership year.
And that
is just about the way it was.
