CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #030803 - MID-WEEK - Thursday, August 28, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News

If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

This is the "MID-WEEK CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE," part two of the issue we sent out on Monday. The MONDAY issue includes the regular listings for cabarets around the world, and also has information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. Soon, the Monday issue will also include listings of shows offering discounts to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members. This "MID-WEEK" issue will concentrate more on news, late breaking stories and notes on shows seen.

OH MY - IS THAT SEPTEMBER UP AHEAD?

The month of August here in NYC has been both boring and eventful! None of the 50-million folks who were caught in the now infamous "Blackout of 2003" will forget that event, but little else of the month really caught my attention. In fact, looking over my calendar of the past month, I note that I attended just 13 cabaret shows on just 10 nights, with just two more shows to catch, tonight and tomorrow night before Labor Day on Monday, September 1st!

Of course September will be a different story completely. First off, the "major rooms" here in town reopen, the new MAMA ROSE'S (219 Second Avenue, NYC) opens later in the month, and folks return to NYC from their summer vacation away from the steamy streets of Manhattan.

I am taking the extended weekend off, so the normal MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will go out on TUESDAY this week. Keep an eye out for it, since I will be giving you as complete a rundown of cabaret in September around the world as is possible - if you have something you think I should include, send it in. I hope to give a monthly preview in the first issue of every month.

I was able to get a lot of work done in the website these past few days, and there are a number of new items on the BREAKING NEWS page from all sections of the world - a list is below. I have several more to add - later today and tomorrow. I can't stress enough that I prefer press releases sent via e-mail - it saves me a lot of retyping. Remember, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is a one-person operation, and my typing fingers get tired occasionally, meaning a delay in getting your story out. And please, send complete information - so many folks forget important things like the address and reservation phone number of the venue, or the cover charge. One publicist (supposedly a pro) nearly always forgets to include the name of the musical director, and another is still using my nearly-three-year-old address, meaning often the releases reach me after the event has taken place! And don't forget to add your website URL - it is amazing how many folks (including publicists) who forget this vital piece of information! They spend thousands of dollars for a website and then forget to include the URL in a press release!

Oh, yes, and please don't just send me a website link - I get between 5 and 10 listing requests and press releases a day, and I simply don't have the time to visit every link, copy down the information, and the type up a three or four paragraphs. I actually usually visit the link after I post the article on my website, just to make sure it is working correctly.

This issue also marks the first of a new section - CABARET THIS 'N THAT - short items of cabaret performers on the move, at play, wherever. You will find this section near the end of the newsletter, after the mini-reviews. You are invited to submit information and tidbits for this section - if I feel it is appropriate, I will include it.

A BIG THANK YOU NOTE

Once again, I send a great big thank you to all the many folks who have joined or rejoined as members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE in our 2003-2004 membership drive! It is really thrilling to see several brand new members join, and so many folks rejoining. Note that every membership donation I receive is acknowledged within about 48 hours with a form e-mail letter. Please check that the amount on the acknowledgement agrees with the donation sent (I have sent out over 250 so far, and I am not infallible). Also, tomorrow I should finish sending out all the membership cards - the only ones left are where I didn't get an address with the membership donation. We passed the 250 mark, and are heading for 300.

DON'T SAY I DIDN'T WARN YOU

BANNER AD spaces on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website selling our fast for September & October - especially around the time of the October Cabaret Convention here in NYC. I have just 5 spaces left for several of those weeks. Keep in mind, I limit the ads to 20 banners per week, so if you plan to order a banner, reserve your banner space as soon as possible. Banner ads are displayed at random in two places on nearly all 2,500+ pages. This means your ad could be seen as many as 3,000 times each day, 21,000 times each week! You can run a banner for 2 weeks on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for just $80 - in full color - with a "live link" to your website, if applicable. That's before any member rebates or discounts. In addition, those running banners get mentioned every week in the MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail newsletter (current circulation nearly 2,500) as long as the banner is running.

For information on banner ads, check out the banner information page on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml), or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com with the single word "Banner" in the subject line and I'll send all the details.

CABARET CD SALE PAGES ADDED FOR 2003-2004 TO WEBSITE

SILVER MEMBERS can display one CD on their page, GOLD MEMBERS and above can display up to four CDs (additional CDs - GOLD or above members only - can be added, if requested, at $15 each). The CD FOR SALE listing includes a special page under your name, displaying your CD cover(s) and a link to a website of your choice where the CD may be purchased. You can link to your own website, or to LML Music, CD Baby, Amazon, or some other site.

This membership benefit is by request, so if you already are a new member, please let me know if you wish to be linked in this section of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - see http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/MemberCDSales2002.shtml. I need a copy of your CD or a jpg scan of the CD cover in order to build the page.

SHOWS SEEN

One of the reasons why I went to two issues of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE per week is that the single issues were getting so filled with listings stuff, I had no room to mention shows seen and other items of interest. This time I will cover several shows that I saw earlier this year, and returned for a second visit.

RICHARD HOLBROOK AT DANNY'S

Richard Holbrook did a 2-night run recently at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/) and I was there for the opening night. His show was called "The Untapped Fred Astaire," and Mr. Holbrook, backed by the Tom Nelson Trio, presented a toe-tapping show based on the songs from the Astaire film songbook. There were songs from "Top Hat," "Swing Time," "Ziegfeld Follies," "Easter Parade" and more. Most were familiar, several were not known to me. Arriving on stage in top hat and cane, Mr. Holbrook opened with "Stepping Out," in medley with "I Wanna Be a Dancing Man." There were several other medleys in the show, and the evening was indeed a revelation of the wide variety of Astaire's songs - and yet a certain "rubber stamp" sameness to most of them. Nearly all of the songs were part of a movie story, and essential to the forward movement of the film - almost like dialogue set to music. They were mostly light and frothy, meant to be danced to as well as sung. The many stories and anecdotes about the songs, the composers, the films and Mr. Astaire's life were many and interesting. My favorite song of the evening was "This Heart of Mine," (Warren/Freed) when Mr. Holbrook relaxed and gave a bit of heart and feeling to an otherwise fast-paced performance.

Richard Holbrook's "The Untapped Fred Astaire" returns to DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/) in October. Astaire fans and film buffs will find it especially interesting.

DIANE D'ANGELO AT THE DUPLEX

I have watched Diane D'Angelo almost from her first cabaret show - not that many years ago, and was fascinated by her continued growth as a performer when I saw her show at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/) last week. The show was called "East of the Sun," and featured Rick Jensen as musical director. Making a radiant entrance, Ms. D'Angelo opened with "The Nearness of You," while strolling through the audience, welcoming us with her own nearness. There were several cabaret performers scattered through the audience, and were there, as one of the put it, "to hear one of the finest voices in cabaret." I agree, and no one was disappointed. Rick and Diane put a new spin on several songs - a risk that often does not work, but in this show managed to give some brand new life to some old familiar tunes. Her rendition of "Shall We Dance" (which I have heard Ms. D'Angelo do before) is a classic sample of how old lyrics can be reborn. I urge Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich to hear how Ms. D'Angelo makes their song, "Sweet Menemsha Moon," come to life and touch the heart. Some close harmony with Mr. Jensen on "Mountain Greenery" gave the delightful show an extra special sparkle, and somehow I see a CD in this show's future.

Fortunately, Diane D'Angelo's "East of the Sun" has been extended at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/), with added shows on Wednesdays, September 10th & 17th at 9:00 pm. The lady is amazing - I know that you will be thrilled with this show.

BJ CROSBY AT THE DUPLEX

When I was in New Orleans a few weeks ago, the lady that everyone seemed to ask about was BJ Crosby - she has really made her mark on that city! So I had an extra special reason to catch Ms. Crosby's show at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/) a few weeks back. It has been a few years since I saw this exciting talent perform a whole show, but Ms. Crosby is one of those giving folks that seem always ready to perform at a benefit somewhere. Of course, any and every appearance by Ms. Crosby is explosive and unforgettable, and an hour show starring this lively lady is an experience one long remembers. Wearing an outfit that left little to the imagination (she later admitted that she had left a portion of her dress at home, and spent the last half of the show with a towel around her waist), she again pulled out all th stops, hardly needing a microphone. There were only 11 songs in the entire show, but one hardly noticed the brevity - savoring every second of the exciting performance. Often drifting into the audience, Ms. Crosby gave the evening a highly personalized feeling - the way cabaret should be done. A high point was her rendition of "Love Me By Name," which was followed by a moment of silence on behalf of Gregory Hines, who's death was announced just that day. Returning to her youth as a choir singer and church soloist she performed "To God Be The Glory" without mike, and the room fell silent for a moment before standing to applaud. Once again I left knowing that I had seen a talent who exudes greatness, power and a lot of love.

Ms. Crosby appeared to be having such a great time performing at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/), I know that there will be a return visit next time her schedule permits. I urge you to experience this amazing talent.

There will be more cabaret mini-reviews in the next Mid-Week issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter. I have also been collecting them for a special section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ ) where I can expand on my comments and include a photo when possible. I will also be adding several that will not appear in the e-mail CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE issues. I'll let you know when they are posted.

How do you get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ )? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available.

Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. With two newsletters going out a week, I don't have enough time to look these things up, and often have to simply toss out incomplete items. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.

IT'S TIME TO GO - MORE ON MONDAY

I am looking forward to a relaxing holiday weekend. If the weather holds up I plan to get to CONEY ISLAND - a trip I usually take on the 4th of July - for a taste of a fabulous NATHAN'S Hot Dog, a walk on the boardwalk, and a tour of the amusement rides (you will note that I didn't say 'a ride on' - those rides are against my religion, as I am a devout coward). Actually, I go to look at the people - I am fascinated by people! I guess that's why I love cabaret - I love real people. I rarely go to movies or the theater, and except for LAW & ORDER, I rarely watch TV shows beyond the news channels.

Tonight I am off to THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/) for Mychelle Colleary's ALCATRAZ to SINGSING show at 7:00 pm. I've seen it before and it is a real treat, with a lot of comparisons between living in San Francisco and living in NYC.

I hope a lot of you will sign on as CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members this year, The first year we tried this we almost hit 300 members, and this past year we passed the 350 member mark (nearly a 20% increase). A similar increase this year would bring us over 400 members. Personally, I am hoping for more than 500 members - dare I hope for 1,000? - enabling us to provide even more services, get around to more cities and even finally be able to compensate some of the folks who have been writing reviews and assisting in the website work - and maybe attract more writers to contribute material, news and reviews.

But most of all, your membership donation is a way for you to encourage me in my efforts to promote the art of cabaret, and support this newsletter and the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ ). Your continued support is truly appreciated!

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
